Tasha P retains Calypso Queen title

Dominica’s 2011 Calypso Monarch Tasha P has begun making her mark on the 2012 kaiso season.

Peltier, the reigning Stardom Calypso Queen of the Tent, struck again at Wednesday night’s Calypso Queen contest to retain that title, with her rendition “I eh Leaving You”.

Some calypso lovers at the Sisserou Hotel show suggested that Tasha P got stiff competition from teenager Janay, whose youth became a non-factor when she so commanding ruled the stage with a powerfully rendered and lyrically-strong number that chronicled her love for calypso and what the artform can do for you.

Not surprisingly, she placed second, with that song penned by her calypso-writer father Ian Jackson.

Other winners were Twana 3rd and Nashell 4th.

Winner Tasha P told Dominica News Online on Thursday that she was actually worried before the results were announced that young Janay may have been crowned Queen of the Tent, but that she felt confident enough that she had given a good enough account of herself to retain the title.

MC for the night and Dominica Calypso Association executive member Alex Bruno described Wednesday night’s Queen of the Tent competition as a success story.

Heartened by the fact that teenagers Janay and Nashell placed in the top four, Bruno, himself a calypsonian, told Dominica News Online that “having two youngsters perform so creditably augurs well for the future of calypso in Dominica”.

Queen Tasha P must now go on to bigger things when she defends her Calypso Monarch crown in the National finals later this month.

Her “Woman Time” chant ruled the calypso arena last year, but fans of other former kings suggest she might have a hard time extending her rule, with the very popular former King Dice among those likely to make every effort to dethrone Dominica’s first female Calypso monarch.

Remarking that she was the only woman in the finals this year, she told DNO that the competition this year was “tougher than it was last year”.

“I have to do ten times the amount of work I did last year this time around to defend my crown,” the reigning Monarch said, adding that she was prepared to do that and confident that she can hold on to the Monarchy.

@ Asterix. MAY means that their is a possibility or is in question. Anyway I still believe that Dice is a very poor ambassador. He has very good vocals though. We must learn to look at the facts of every matter and not cover people’s faults just because they happen to be our favorites. I also observe during calypso season a lot of people who talk against the judges decisions don’t have a musical bone in their body and have no clue as to the way the judges come about their decisions. I listened to the Stardom women’s competition and due to my musical ear, I noticed in two areas where young Jackson lost points. Last year also Dice failed in a number of areas. Please let us just enjoy the shows and refrain from making ignorant comments. Calypso is not only about jumping up and down a stage or having popular song. There is more to it than that and judging those competitions sometimes are even difficult for the professionals. My best to all the competitors and may the most deserving one win.

Re Twana copy cat Tasha P controversy here:
Did it ever occur to you that Tasha P may have been a role model for Twana? Just look at it from that perspective. Maybe, however, the way the topic is treated publicly as ‘copy cat’ should be more less negative, to encourage the young lady could brand her own style. Tasha might be a role model to Twana and she may be imitating a bit, but let’s be constructive. We should avoid breaking down budding talent.

I listened to the Stardom Tent last night and I was just so disgusted by SCRUNTER. To me SCRUNTER showed no class by introducing a song name “The Assault” – an attempt to mirror Hunter’s calypso “ The Asfault”. One listens to the lyrics and clearly Scrunter acted out of desperation or fear of reprisal. Scrunter it was you who said that Calypso is big man thing why are you behaving like a little boy. If you don’t have the guts to sing about those in power leave calypso for man and woman with fortitude.I am sure that Scrunter know much better than to sing that song at the Semi finals.

    • dominican
      February 2, 2012

but he can sing about other things and still have a good song but i believe these guys have lived their peak and naturally there will always be others coming up to continue the artform so they have to show respect to the new crop of calysonians.

      February 3, 2012

‘Calypso Fan’, people like you are really SICK and DISGUSTING!!!! So you mean that calypsonians should ONLY sing on topics that satisfy the likes of you (i.e anti-government, anti-skerrit, anti-dlp)??? If they dare sing on any other topic or in favour of the government they should be banned???

Then you wonder why the MAJORITY of Dominicans are SOOO afraid of letting the Party you guys support get back into power?????

      • Calypso fan
        February 3, 2012

call it as I se it. I am not like you an appologist for any political party. Because of your shallow mind I will attempt to break this down for you Anonymous. Scrunter went through the preliminary round with a calypso where he seem to want to drive along the political divide. He tried to create the semblance of impartiality. Then immediately there after he desperately came out with a song “the Assualt” singing for the party in power. My point is if you stand for balance in calypso be a man and do so and if you are inclined to a political party do the same. What is most disgusting is that he wrote the song to mirror Hunters brilliant song the Assfault”. Why did scrunter feel the need to come out with the song blasting the opposition two weeks after releasing a calypso that appeared to be balance. One cannot help but to be suspicious as we all know that Scrunter had been accused of being a acolyte calypsonian. The song assault is written just like Hunters song and to me that is low; it shadows Hunters song and again I do hope he does not sing that song in the semi final competition. The Srunter move diminishes Hunters song- that’s my opinion

  16. duet or Duel?
    February 2, 2012

Does a DUET or a Duel (two calypsonians singing and performing ) qualify in calypso competition?

Tasha P’s song needed the other guy to bring out the message. He prepared the crowd for her early in the show, then came back to start her performance by singing his verses as a duet then Tasha P came on sang to him still on the stage. They started and ended as a duel then a duet

She knew that she was outdone by both Twana and Janay.
Twana drew the largest crowd and her only problem was she was given a mic that was off …still she bounced back and Rocked the entire hotel. Her props and performance was the best.
Janay was off key for her 1st two verses then got into the groove.
The videos will show these facts.

      February 3, 2012

AMEN TO YOUR COMMENT!!!TWANA INDEED DREW THE BIGGEST CROWD!! I WAS WATCHING IT LIVE ON DNO…SO IT’S A FACT.. THE ONLY PROBLEM FOR TWANA WHICH WAS NO FAULT OF HERS WAS THAT, SHE WAS GIVEN A MIC WHICH WAS NOT WORKING SO SHE HAD TO WAIT A FEW SECONDS FOR A WORKING ONE..
I BELIEVE TWANA WILL GO VERY FAR!! SHE HAS GREAT POTENTIAL..ALSO JANAY.. SHE WAS VERY GOOD..BTW I LOVE TASH P VERY MUCH!!

Congratulations to Tasha P continuing to break new ground in Dominica calypso. Forget the haters you were the best on this night though competition was tight. The young guns gave a valiant effort but you have to outright beat the Queen no tie in that. Ladies keep the art-form alive and positive.

sure. dice has a gift and he did not want to win the crown last year he shouted for a reason last year. so tasha sounding scared and is afraid of the competition. dice again man.my only problem with him is that he needs to put a greater efort to teach gheto youth that there is a way out and we can turn gheto life style around. he must realise that this is the reason why GOD gave him that gift. to inspire others out of anti social lifestyles and become positive. hope he makes use of that gift it is not just about singing and winning ok my king dice. i am and remain your fan.

So why did Dice compete. You all are so foolish. Does it make sense to go all that way if you did not want to win. So if he shouted for a reason, why did he place 1st runner up. He should’ve just told them to give someone else the place.

  24. February 2, 2012

to all those who felt that Janay should have won…. let me tell you all… even if you feel that way.. in the interest of economics she would never been given the title… do you know how that would have derailed tasha p quest for another crowned… it would cause people to lose interest since she should be the main attraction to calypso…. but nonetheless we all know Dice is our Mike Tyson of Calypso… he brings the biggest bucks lol

To all the ‘Gangster King’ fans writing here trying to diss Tasha P with their ridiculous commentary, why don’t you guys tell your ‘Gangster king’ and his ‘Puppet Master’ songwriter to stop the abuse of our country leaders in song? imagine encouraging school children NOT to stand when the PM or President visit their schools, but only for the teacher’s sake???

Even if it is clear that we should teach appreciation and respect for our teachers, is this the message we want to get accross. Just because we hate the sitting PM and President and want to ridicule them??? Again, I guess in Dominica these days any and everything is lauded (once it meets our politically biased perspectives). February 2, 2012

Congrats to Tasha and all the other competitors. I’m hearing this controversial talk about the crown being Janay’s and not Tasha’s….one thing I’ve come to realise is that calypso is not a “just-come” vibe; have u ever seen a newcomer just step on stage and win? I’m not sure if it’s a way of telling the competitors that they have to be “tried and true”. Dice has been subject to that, and all the other kings. Tarina, Sandy…even Tasha P in 2010. So Janay, don’t be disheartened m’dear. As long as you got life, come strong in 2013 and prove to the judges you’re a winner.

Twana you have potential but PLEASE GET YOUR OWN STYLE FOR PETE’S SAKE. You keep failing because you are a Tasha clone and its not working maybe thats why you did not make the eleminations. You folks are too emotional, it doesnt take a genius to listen to and watch Twana to see she is a copy cat. She copying the voice, THE LEG KICK, even the freaky expressions. If you love Twana so much be a true friend, face the facts and help the child to get her own style. The way she is going on right now she will fall hard, it already started at the eliminations. Think of it, check who made it in the eliminations and check Twana and tell my what other reason could prevent her from making it than the copycat thing. Twana got ZERO POINTS FOR ORIGINALITY, GO FIGURE.

When I heard Janay last night on the radio broadcast via the television company, I could not switch to another channel or move away from the television set as I am fond to do. I was very much impressed. The lyrics were well put together and the melody is fantastic and she delivered with confidence. She sounded like a pro with a lot of experience. Commentator Duncan Stowe stated that that the competition for the crown was between Janay and Tasha P and surmised that the crown would be given to the latter because she is more experienced. I suspect this is what happened. Tasha won because she is the defending Calypso Monarch (not just the Calypso Queen)and has more experience in performance.

Congrats to Janay and to Ian. They both should be very proud. Janay, if she remains with the art form, will develop into one of the top calysonians in the country. I hope she wins the Junior Monarch.

I find it so refreshing that the children of many calypsonians are taking up the art form.

I was at the show last nite and clearly young janay put Tasha P in the shade. Tasha performed like she was in a swinging stars fete and not in a competition. Tasha is very weak this year. That i eh leaving song while it has an okay melody it is weak lyrically and not good enough for a monarch to defend with. I can see the people like Dice, Sye, Secko, Explosion and Black Diamond among others putting real licks on Tasha P in this finals.
While she was a good ambassador for the country the competition is about song and honestly Tasha is struggling this year

ARRRRRRRRRR DONT BE A FOOL. THERE IS GREAT COMPETITION FOR HER AND HONESTLY WITH THAT SONG TASHA STANDS NO CHANCE OF WINNING HER CROWN. AND I AM FAN OF HER’S AND I SEE THAT.

I am a lover of Tasha P but she definitely did not deserve the crown last night. I was so surprised that they gave her the crown when everyone knew that Janay had delivered much better than the rest. Although Janay sent a strong message to the judges they paid no heed. I am very disappointed. Tasha has my vote for the Calypso Monarch but they should have given Janay her dues.

DE BIG CROWN SHE REMAIN TO TAKE. WE WANT SOMEBODY WORTHY TO GO OUT AND REPRESENT DOMINICA. NOT A PROBLEM CHILD WE ALWAYS HAVE TO BE AFRAID HE EMBARRASS US WHEN HE OPEN HIS MOUTH. GO TASHA!!!! WE KNOW YOU WORTHY AND WE NOT ASHAME TO SEND YOU!!!!

So true. He is a good stage performer but a very poor embassador for Dominica.

@ isdert: Who is the problem child may I ask? Why can’t you call his name (because you said “HE”)? Is he (singular) the only other person besides Tasha who can be monarch? Are there not other he’s and she’s who take part in the calypso monarch competition? Are there not others who bring more shame to the good name of Dominica? The problem child would more than often perform to a Dominican audience outside of Dominica except for probably a regional competition which which are not so many. The others that embarass Dominica do so to a world of people and they do more harm than the problem child. You people are just plain hypocritical haters. A blind eye is turned to others who bring shame to our country yet you can’t get over the fact that the problem child is blessed with a rare talentthat he makes use of.

u joking right with that comment …….so u telling me if OUR KIND go on finals and prove him self like he always do….he should not get the crown .awah we pal.just like last night the crown was not hers either .they allow janay to perform with big women and she prove her self to the max and she deserved what was due to her .not cause tasha is calypso queen and have more experience and is older men allu had to give it to her cause truth be told janay did a better job last night .DICEEEEEEEEEE AGAIN .WHO VEX LOST THAT IS MY OPINION .

@ isdert I do not beleive you listentened to the song correctly. It seems that both your mind and ears are cloudy. The song says “even if I MAY act wrongfully”…. ” even if I MAY be unworthy”. The underlying word there is MAY. GET A DICTIONARY AND LOOK UP THE MEANING/S of the word. He is simply saying that this is how he is perceived by folks like you. He is not saying that he has acted wrongfully or is unworthy
