Secondary School Students viewing films of the Second Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase at the Windsor Park Stadium in Roseau

Dominicans will have the opportunity to view films that make up The Third Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase at Alliance Francaise on Elmshall Road in Roseau from July 12-16, 2011.

This Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase is aimed at showcasing films produced in the Caribbean, providing a greater and more effective visibility of the work of filmmakers and audiovisual professionals in the Caribbean.

The First Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase which was held in Dominica in 2007 consisted of 30 films from 15 Caribbean countries.  The films from this showcase were screened in 19 countries in our region and were also shown at the American Cinemateque in Hollywood, and the British Museum in London.

The Second Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase, which was devoted to children and adolescents and encompassed some 54 films of varying genres from 12 Caribbean countries, was showcased to Dominican students of varying ages at the Windsor Park Stadium in 2009.

This the Third Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase consists of 43 films from 18 countries and includes films in which Caribbean authors present the life of the Caribbean Diaspora around the world as wells as films by non-Caribbean authors whose stories offer a true approach to the realities of our region.  The selection also includes a section devoted to films for children and adolescents.  The selection for children ages 8-12 were showcased to some 450 primary school students at the Arawak House of Culture on June 30, 2011.  The selection for adolescents will be shown at the beginning of September.  The showcase has already been presented in Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Belize, the Cayman Islands, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Jamaica and St. Kitts & Nevis.

Sponsored regionally by UNESCO and UNICEF, and supported by the Cuban Institute of Art and Cinematographic Industry in collaboration with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase is a meaningful tool for encouraging a Caribbean film and video industry as well as for highlighting the diversity and unity of Caribbean Culture.  We therefore invite the public to join us as we sit back, relax and enjoy the Caribbean through the eyes of our filmmakers.

The event is hosted by Dominica Film Office and Discover Dominica Authority in collaboration with Alliance Francaise.
