Mixed feelings about Tommy Lee Sparta concert

With less than a month to go before Jamaican dancehall reggae artiste, Tommy Lee Sparta, is expected to headline the opening of Portsmouth carnival with a concert at the Arbeedee Cinema on February 16, there are mixed feelings about the whole affair.

Concert organizer Cabral Douglas, has dismissed suggestions that Sparta, a controversial figure in dancehall music, has been accused of glorifying demonism during his performances. Sparta, aged 26, whose real name is Leroy “Junior” Russell, has described his style as “Gothic Dancehall”, and often features dark subject matter, according to the Wikipedia website.

In an interview with DNO, Ellen Paul, the coordinator of Youth on a Mission for God, said that eight days before the concert, on February 8, there will be a day of prayer, fasting and education at the Achievement Learning Center in Pottersville. This will be for the young people to show their displeasure, she said.

However, Paul said she is not against the individual, in fact she would like to meet him, but the message. “I’m not against him; I’m against the lyrical content of his song.” She said that the island already has “enough of violence and death, and we cannot continue to unleash those demonic words to our youth.”

Solomon John Paul, an employee of the Portsmouth Town Council whose private security firm has been contracted to provide security for the Tommy Lee Sparta concert, does not share that view. Asked about the lyrical contents of Sparta, Paul said that people interpret songs differently. “Everything has two sides, but my take on it is looking at the good impact it will have, not only Dominica, but people in Portsmouth.”

He said that he hoped that everything would go off peacefully “as God himself would like. But as to if I don’t want it around. No I cannot say that.”

According to Paul, the concert will bring opportunities to men who are unemployed but trained security officers to earn some money. “If they work properly,” he said, “who knows if something comes up I would pick them up again; so it is a good thing.”

Mayor of Portsmouth Cleave St Jean said that as a community leader he would not have chosen this artist. He said that people need to be sensitive about these things. However, he said, “We are going to see what the people want.”

Cabral Douglas
Cabral Douglas says Tommy Lee sends a positive message this year

Meantime, in a release from organizer Douglas, who is also the part owner and manager of the Arbeedee Cinema, he said that Portsmouth is currently in the process of rebranding its tourism product as a centre for entertainment. “So we are delighted to have our carnival open with a performance by Tommy Lee.  We believe it will attract not only national but regional guests to our shores,” said Douglas.

He also noted that Tommy Lee’s lyrical content could assist in uniting the town of Portsmouth. “This year he sends a positive message of upliftment. Hopefully the youth in Dominica and Portsmouth will be inspired by him,” he said.

Tickets ($50 regular and $100 VIP) are available from the Arbeedee Cinema (Portsmouth), Bulls Eye Pharmacy (Roseau), Graphics Record Shop (Roseau), Miss Bay Shop (Grand Bay) and A&A Low Price Centre Calibishie.

What we want in Dominica, are persons who have lyrics to motivate and improve our youths, not to make them worst than some of them are.

If you are concern about the tomorrow of Dominica, we have to start by promoting positive mines not to help make it worst.

That artist is NOT a good role model for any youth in any part of the world.

the low minded Dominicans who are referring too, are those that DO NOT care but just believe in getting the CASH.

Just think of our young people.

  11. January 23, 2014

According to Dr. Phil. You got the remote in your hands. Switch off when ever you wants. Everyone has an opinion but we all know there’s a lot of positive lyrics out there and kids as well as we grown ups don’t take it serious. Does it means that the bad lyrics are easier to fall for? Its all in our mind. Get use to our world. GOOD Or BAD. Choose one.

If Busy Signal can headline The World Creole Music Festival, Tommy Lee can headline the Opening of carnival – the themes are actually very consistent (costumes, masks, jumbies…but in a dancehall context to break up the soca and bouyon vibe that will have already taken place in the park, then after Tommy Lee – we go back to the Bouyon with triple kay…perfect fit really.

      January 24, 2014

Grell, your comment is really sad. How can you generalize an entire population of people and say that they have no love for life when murders are happening everyday all over the world? In Trinidad there have been over 40 murders since the start of the year. Do the Math to see what the average is per day. Since you are clearly an avid reader of the Jamaica Observer then you should be able to tell me the murder rate in Jamaica for the same time period. On this very page a man is being charged for murder. And about 2 weeks ago I read also that a man was stabbed to death in Roseau. Are you aware of what is going on in Mexico with the drug war? Do you read about the mass murders of 60 or more people at once buried in shallow graves? The fact is anyone with deep psychological problems and a motive will kill regardless of origin or nationality. Get your mind out the gutter and stop blaming Jamaicans for everything. We have our problems but so does the rest of the world. We don’t make guns in Jamaica but you don’t hear Jamaicans blaming America for their gun problems. Personally I am not a fan of Tommy Lee Sparta hence I would never attend any of his shows. I would never say all dancehall and reggae music is demonic. Jamaica has produced and continues to produce some of the greatest artist in the world. Check out some of the works by artist like Chronixx, Christopher Martin, Romain Virgo among others on youtube and you will experience the other side of Jamaican music. My point is you should pick the good from the bad and keep it moving. I recently discovered Bouyou music through a friend of mine who is from Dominica. Prior to August of last year I have never heard of it. It’s new and different and I like it. I would never bash it as subpar to Calypso or any other genre of music. Live and let live man at the end of the day we are all one people.

I’mWondering why Dominicans are so bloody hypocritical!!!!!

talking about Sparta’s music and the devil together.

you guys are shameless. what exactly is the difference between Tommy’s music and the crap that some of these Dominican bands sing? why is Tommy’s so much worse.

how impressionable is his music on the young Dominican public as compared to the Dominican nonsense that i’ve heard… (hey girl, open wide/ i wanna go down in your sous) and that’s just a few tamer ones.

    stop with the hypocrist.

Ask your artist to sing proper influential songs then wheel ad com again and talk bout Tommy Lee.

This is complete madness we must not allow this man into our country, our youth are already in crisis and country in such violence, don’t we by now understand the power of the enemy, we need not take this lightly, this man has already sent his demons to pave the path for his entrance and if we as believers sit by and allow this man into DOMINICA then we as the church again is to blame for the many violence that will occur not just during carnival but all year round. GOVERNMENT wake up open your eyes and take a stand to this rubbish. DO NOT LET THE DEVIL IN. We take simple things and make issues and the important things we allow to pas by until damage is done.

CHURCH open your spiritual eyes and stand up for God, now is the time to show the enemy we are not afraid of him and he will not enter our COUNTRY, stop fighting each other and start to fight the enemy.

Mrs. Paul you are doing a good job with the youth however don’t compromise your integrity and stand in God, you should not want to meet this man pray him out instead. NO COMPROMISE, DEVIL YOU STAY OUT.

Who invited him? Those who did should know what his lyrics consist of. Dominica is not Jamaica and far from it.
His pictures tell a lot about him; not a godly person. In no uncertain terms, he should be informed and warned about what he plans to sing in Dominica.
If his type of songs consist of demonic and violence, then, he should not be invited or allowed to sing in Dominica. Those who are aware and invite him are equally guilty. Tell him to keep the curse and his curse out of Dominica. Keep him out! Find someone conducive who will be a model especially to the youths who will be listening to him/her.

I honestly find People have taken too long to voice their displeasure on this issue. Mr. Douglas won’t see a problem here because is his business- is he who mainly benefiting but we need to think further than where we stand. How can this artist bring unity? Have you ever listened to his lyrics or looked at his videos? Take some time to do so and evaluate. Is this what u want for the youth of Portsmouth n Dominica by extension? The younger people won’t see cause most are already possessed with the lyrical venom he spits out.Only pure evil, evil, evil. That’s all. Isn’t there enough crime in Possie? There are many other artists that you could choose from. We really need to pray in this place. Lord have mercy father!!!!

Those Peenese in that Arbeedee Cinema most jump from the seats and bite Cabral butt. With all the Artist around the Caribbean and in Dominica itself is Mister Cabral choosing to bring Portsmouth. Cabral, not noting the wave of crime that’s going on in Portsmouth, to me is greed and lack of care for the Community Cabral has why he choose this artist. Let’s hope Police on standby because with the influx of undesirables that will descend on the town, will make even the grannies and grand dad run…Mother’s keep your young people guarded and your young girls locked up. • Jha_Gwatas
      January 23, 2014

You make it seems that Tommy Lee is the only artist who speaks or sings about crime and violence, our own local bands sing about violence and crime. im a BIG fan of tommy lee and in my opinion he sings about the same things(crime, love fun and peace) other artist sings about. Blueblue, purple city and other gangs were are at the WCMF where busy signal sang ‘gangster nuh bleach’ i didn’t see them start shooting homosexuals n “rapist” as the song said………. people choices are made by them not lyrics in a song. If tommy lee decides to worship Satan it has nothing to DO with my soul if i dance to tommy lee or any other artist songs that are not gospel its the same sin. so next time try bring gospel artist like Papa-san and Sherwin Ganer. U PEOPLE MAKE DOMINICANS LOOK DUMB WITH THESE INSANE COMMENTS. When it comes to JAYZ and Beyonce There are several accusation of demonic prays and satanic rituals done in their performances if they were to perform here i can bet my last dollar we wont be having this discussion. February when Tommy Lee is up on that stage i’ll be in the front row shouting SSSSPPPPPAARTTTTAA!!! WOOOOY!!

      • Poosie I come out!!!
        January 24, 2014

Sorry to say this but you are very STUPID my friend. the discussion her is not about beyonce or jay z its about TOMMY LEE, so we have no right including them in it whatever people listen in their free time is them, if you chose to listen to tommy lee then thats you but the fact that they are bringing him here that is the main proble..understand !!!

  52. Anonymous
    January 22, 2014

So Cabral CLAIM that tommy lee’s lyrical content could assist in uniting Portsmouth hmmm how the hell a man who call’s himself “Uncle Demon” bring unity in the place?? Please explain to me..i mean for God’s sake look at his lyrics

“Any Bwoy put a foot a get SHOOK Mi nuh care weh yuh come from… SHOOK Smaddy head haffi go open like Book Wen mi walk ina yuh place and shot out yuh face look ina yuh marrow and… puke… God kill mi, mi nuh have nuh heart… Mi evil more den how mi bloodclaat look… A mi fuss ta corrupt di war”

And still when gangs from all over Dominica all the “blue blue crew” and the “orange city crew” and the others come in one place what gonna happen? arbredee cinema soo small when they walk on each other foot kill they want to kill each other. To me that looking like a recipe for disaster all gang bangers, killers, delinquents are all gonna be in one soup just pray to God nothing happens. And i would advise the policemen that if they are gonna involve themselves in this none sense be prepared and don’t go soft on them so that they wouldn’t end up like the policeman the stabbed in Roseau. That is my 2cents if you doh like it lie down by it!!!!!!

Keep in mind that artistry is just that. how you interpret his work is up to you, non the less what his words and work mean to him may be entirely different. We would all be happy if wck or triple kay was invited to another island to open for a celebration. why r we judging this individual? I welcome any top international artist to any event here in Dominica.

Welcome to Dominica. We accept all and everyone. Come-on let the Gangs in. What else is new?

What is this I am hearing. Bringing down a reggae artist for the opening of Carnival. First of all, I love reggae ok, but at carnival time. No way, I don’t think the organizers are serious about Carnival. Honestly, and this is my opinion, I would not sanction the artist for the OPENING OF PORTSMOUTH CARNIVAL. This is ridiculous.

I do not want “UNCLE DEMON” AND “NEPHEW DEMON” in Dominica. We have enough of the devils’s rampage on this tranquil island. Leave the demons where they are.

This is what Dominica embraces. But who shall play with fire will surely burn.
