Musician, and Manager of the Original Bouyon Pioneers, Val Cuffy, has called for Bouyon artistes to treat their music seriously, as a business, and not a hobby, in order to be successful.

“Well, generally, I think the reason we have to catch up in Dominica is that we do not take our music seriously; we think of it as a hobby—it’s a business,” he told Dominica News Online, on Tuesday. “And I want Bouyon artistes to understand that, and keep working at it, keep developing the product, and look at it as a business, not as a side project or a hobby.”

He cited the hard work of the Original Bouyon Pioneers, made up of former members of WCK, who will be among acts for the St. Kitts Music Festival, to be held between June 23rd and 25th.

The band will be the first Dominican act to perform at the event.

Cuffy called it “a tremendous honour and privilege” for the band, and vowed that they will represent Dominica well.

“We look forward to flying the Dominica flag, the Bouyon flag, representing the Nature Isle to the highest level among the great acts that will be there,” he remarked.

He noted that “Bouyon music is climbing the charts—it is being recognised.”

The Original Bouyon Pioneers will perform on Thursday, June 23.

The group will join major stars performing at the event, including: hip-hop star, 50 Cent, Damian Marley, Tarrus Riley, R. City and Morgan Heritage, among others, for the 20th edition of what has become one of the Caribbean’s leading music festivals.

The band’s performance, paired with a collaborative effort from stakeholders, will have a great impact on Dominican festivals and music, Cuffy said.

Yes, I hate bouyon music, it is uncivilized, and I have a right to say so. In fact I think it is crap. If it wasn’t it would have taken over the world already and the so called artistes would be mega rich

  5. MUSIC :!:

    It is not just entertainment.

Don’t think of it as merely a bit of your culture.

Good music has such potential. It can cheer us up and dispel the heaviness. It can give us a new perspective and a fresh appreciation for our values. It can motivate us, and more besides.

There are some great musicians who sing because they like to sing and for no other reason. They don’t think of cutting a record, doing a CD, or a DVD, and it does not cross their minds to put on a concert. If they knew how people enjoy their work they would have more confidence in themselves and do some or all of these things.

I know what I am talking about because I have friends like this. I tell them “God has given you a good voice. You have written some terrific lyrics.” (Yes, some of them have written songs that really touch the heart.) I tell them they need to promote themselves and carry their music forward. If they don’t it will be gone in a few years.

    Good advice Mr. Cuffy :!:

Val, you may have a chance if what these fellows play was music but that is just disorganized noise, so they are not serious. Good luck anyway.

I agree with you. First of all people like Asa Banton cannot sell one song on itunes because lawsuits will hit him left right and centre for infringement of copyrights. The crap that is made by many of these bouyon artists cannot sell so there goes the business suggestion.
