A series of short online-only documentaries (webisodes) featuring various facets of Dominica was launched recently.

Jesse Serwer, editor of LargeUp.com; an online Caribbean culture and lifestyle magazine says the webisodes have been put together to highlight various features of Dominica’s traditional culture which she got the opportunity to enjoy during a visit in 2012.

“Last year around this time I visited Dominica for 10 days with my creative director Martei Korley, during which we filmed numerous interviews with local personalities. We have put together a series of webisodes (short online-only documentaries) called “Beautiful Dominica,” each one spotlighting different facets of Dominica, which we will be rolling out in coming weeks,” Serwer told Dominica News Online.

He added that the first episode “Creole Culture” highlights traditional Creole culture in Dominica as seen during the independence celebrations. Future episodes will cover the Boiling Lake, bouyon star Asa Bantan, cadence legend Chubby of Midnight Groovers, and the revival of Kalinago traditions in the Kalinago Territory.

The webisodes series cover music and culture across the Caribbean and the diaspora.

Serwer noted that the purpose of the project is to highlight the uniqueness of Dominica and broadcast it to the world.

“LargeUp has a mostly young and highly international audience (we’re read in over 180 countries), much of which, despite their interest in or connection to the Caribbean, is unfamiliar with Dominica,” he said. “We wanted to show the island in the best possible light by highlighting some of its most unique features, from the colorful Creole wear worn during independence season to unique topographic features like the Boiling Lake, and homegrown music styles like cadence and bouyon.”
