World Creole Music Festival 2012 launched

Chairman of the Festivals Committee Colin Piper (left) accepts a check from Digicel country manager Johnny Ingle

The Dominica Festivals Committee has officially unveiled part of its line-up for the 16th edition of the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF), to be hosted at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium on October 26, 27 and 28.

The Festival was launched at the Krazy Koconutz on Thursday evening and will pay tribute to musical icon Jeff Joseph. It is set to feature local talents such as the Original Grammacks, Ophelia, Michele Henderson, Triple Kay Global and Asa Banton.

The line-up also includes Jamaican superstars Damien “Junior Gong” Marley and Tarrus Riley, while Barbadian sensation Krosfyah and Haitian group Kreole Las are also expected to perform.

Organizers say the rest of the line-up will be made public by the end of August.

Addressing the ceremony Minister for Culture, Justina Charles, described the festival as the “most prestigious music festival in the Caribbean” and urged Dominicans to play their part in its survival, pointing out that it had economic benefits for most, if not all, segments of society.

Meanwhile Tourism Minister Ian Douglas said the festival is just not about profit but also the benefits it has accrued through the years. “This event is all about the benefit to the Nature Island,” he said, adding that it had stimulated the island’s tourism sector.

During the launch headline sponsor Digicel presented a check of $225,000 to the Dominica Festivals Committee.

Why is the Government involved in what is obviously a private sector enterprise This function should be turned over to private promoters who seem to always make money from their events. No private promoter could sustain losses year after year. The excuse that the festival does not make a profit but the country benefits is a whole lot of CRAP.Give it up before it is too late.We employ an events co ordinator year round to hold a show for three nights,if it took Frankie Crazy Tee working one year to put on a show lasting three nights he would not be in business for too long.Let good sense prevail and turn this thing to private enterprise

Why can’t we feature our top international, regional, local artiste Nasio Fontaine??? He is indeed a super star and we ought to be proud of that.

This year it would be great to have him, in his own right, as a most fitting tribute to Jeff Jo. What say us all?????

I attended a calypso show, couple months back, at the new town savannah, where this year’s calypsonians performed their versions of past road match…. now THAT was interesting, appreciated more by the 40 and over, but it made a little twist to the whole event>>>> thought that was really cool>>>>> would give and interesting twist to the calypsonians night at wcmf…. Their original carnival song and an old one….. Does anyone at WCMF read these comments and take note….. Would love to see Nelly Stharre< Nasio Fountain and D Marley,,,,,, Reggae Night…….

We really need to stop putting politics infront of the welfare of the country. why do we keep pressing our local and culture persons who have the countries best interest at hand. We need to make Mr. Sobers Esprit the lead person of the DFC and our festival will become viable once more. He has the country best interest at heart and he had the visions that the late Eddie Toulon had. Give him a try. He may make us proud and for once we may see the festival making an actual profit and not a loss.

I hear people complaining about some of our local artists not being included in the WCMF line up… It’s true we have to support local, I’m all for it, but we need to face the reality that not too many of our locals are worth $100+ a night… Let’s be real, how many of us here would pay $120 for some of these local artists? Huh?… Also, the festival is not only for the people of D/ca, so we must cater to the interests of those who are flying in from all over the globe just for that annual event… It’s not just about what “we” want, & in truth, most times we are quite content with most of the international artists that are brought to perform… I bet some of y’all happy as hell to see Damian Marley… Doe lie! :L… We need to get away from this small minded mentality we have in this country & adapt to certain decisions made. Trust me!

If you look at the report from the Chronicle, the amount of money being wasted is incredible. They spent more money travelling than in promoting.

The situation in Dominica where a small group of extremely incompetent people can simply keep on failing and failing is no longer acceptable.

I dont care how well you can articulate yourself or how highly regarded your family is. The upshot is a glorified pencil pusher with little track record of actual success is pulling in a good salary and having a good time without actually accomplishing jack .

This year should be the last I hope. When will Government wise up and realize the festival is just a waste of Dominica’s money to regional artist and companies.
The Unprofessional people at DFC people running this festival using all kinds of justification to continue even after making record half million dollar losses, why does Government have a blind eye to this? There are so many Dominicans who can benefit from the funds Government inputting into this festival. educational projects, road maintenance etc, I would tend to think the Prime Minister is very much aware of the incompetence of DFC to run this festival with so much of Dominica’s money being thrown away.

I am fedup with this year after year. What Triple Kay nonesense we keep forgetting the word ‘world’ that goes with the creole festival, Triple Kay’ music cannot be sold world wide it ha no lyrics. Asa Banton for what, one song he sings that people like and now he is on festival. Who advises these organisers. I am also wondering what about those great young bands we have right here who play creole music so well. We forget them. Where are the French bands? what about Nasio, where are we going with this Jamaican, all year round we are bringing in Jamaicans to Dominica. How many Dominicans go to Jamaica to perform??????none

We need to invest some monsy and get some good bands. I would put WCK as pioneers of Bouyon but please if I have to come to that park one more year to see triple kay nonesence I will not pay my money to go to festival. This nonesence has to stop now.

    I am disappointed.

  31. Tribal Voice
    July 27, 2012

Dominicans are a lovely people but also a land of hypocrites who are guided solely by their political tribalism unable to distinguish truth from untruth:
    1. Jeff is an Icon today! Dead Icon! Why was his concert at Krazy Coconuts so poorly attended?
    2. Ophelia is the first Lady of song, why did she suffer the same fate after spending so much?
3.Michele Henderson is an ambassador but her last concert at the Arawak was also poorly attended and she has never ever tried that again in Dominica.
    4. The name Gordon Henderson is probably less known to the authorities for what he has done than for what they chose to ignore…
How can we possibly make fair and objective comments about our artists, our festivals and our music?
You have all the answers…Denial and Tribalism…

How is KROSFYAH more appealing than WCK and EXILE ONE and CHUBBY GROOVERS . I want someone to explain this assness to me.

WHAT Must GORDON HENDERSON do again. WE saw their superlative display when they stole the show in 2k10 wcmf and the patrons do want them back.

YET we spend our money trying to revive a dead KROSFIRE which hasnt perodued any hit song in over a decade. We continue to kill the festival. We will lose it and its value is dropping down. An independent audit is needed. Poor promotion.

    July 27, 2012

I’ve been to some d/cans parties in the US, and all they play is reggae music. Not a zouk, compa or DA music. They are ashamed of their culture. If you go to a Jamaican party you will hear reggae music ALL NIGHT.
So don’t tell me you want them to promote creole music when you as a d/can refuse to do it.
This is not about integration, it’s about promoting what we have with our own artists.

  39. Maximillion
    July 27, 2012

For those of you who think reggae does not belong at the Creole Festival, I remember seeing Morgan Heritage at the WCMF and that was the highlight of the show for me.

Music is music. If they can expose the people to good music, what is wrong with that?

  40. fact check
    July 27, 2012

If by inviting these Jamaicans artists will help us promote creole music, why don’t they invite Midnight Groovers to their reggae sunplash to expose creole music to their audience?
Jamaicans are proud of their culture, but we seem to be hiding ours. The cost of bringing these guys to DA, takes a HUGE chunk of the creole fest resources.
It’s simple! They don’t invite us, so why invite them.

I see no reason to stretch the festival to three nights. I believe two nights with a good line-up of amazing artists will bring good returns and reduce expenses. It is futile to have an event that keeps operating at a loss in a poor country like Dominica. To all the people who keep saying it’s not about profit…that is a load of bull. Also, it shows the lack of planning that goes into the event, when the actual event has been launched and the complete line-up is not available.

To the people who are complaining about the Jamaican reggae singers being part of the festival…please remember that Colton T, a Dominican is doing his REGGAE thing. He is singing on a reggae beat.

We are all Caribbean folks and we should be able to integrate our music and styles. We shouldn’t want it to be all Dominican since that’s not international and that “nuh mek it”

I have heard many a creole word in Jamaican songs, so before you guys try to call for a restriction or ban on great talent performing at the Creole fest…think about the implications of what you are trying to achieve.

the idea is also about promoting creole music to the outside world. If you keep it local, then who’s going to want to come to it?

Every artist that returns will have things to say about Dominica – it’s either a positive promotion or not…but it’s promotion. Remember Queen Ifrica promotion of Dca in 2010 – she loves Dominica esp SCREWS

And in the interest of supporting reggae and Dominicans who are pursuing reggae careers, i say let COLTON T perform

You see when people illiterate these sorts of misunderstandings always take place.

The report is that the committee has officially unveiled ‘part’ of the line up. The inference ought to be that the line up has not been finalized. If the line up has not been finalized it should not come as a surprise that the final lineup cannot be found on the website.

So why are you looking for it there?

    Food for thought

Very please with the major acts for the WCMF this year, my only problem there should only be one Jamaican artist as was the norm in the early days.
My recommendation now is to put a good team from the French West Indies to have a tribute to Jeff Joe, for example Tanya St. Val, Zouk Machine, etc.

Dno I may be wrong but I think their names spell Tarrus not Taurus and Damian not Damien check the spelling. Anyway its a great line up. I know Damian and Tarrus can really rock this show. Expect a major turn out even from the elderly because their music is mostly descent and spreading love.

I LOVE the festival, good line up so far. But hello…..it’s only a festival, what’s all this ministers have to give speech, they use words like ‘Tourism Product’, don’t these guys have work to do, thinking out-of -de-box to do??

Though it has my support, I would merge the whole thing with Agriculture and put more resources into Agriculture.

This thing is slowly degenerating into a Blocko, CEWO-style.

I say since we can’t resurrect Eddie then bring back Jeffry Brisbane or put Wadix (Young Bull is too eratic).

This Piper man is boring and lacks the savoire-faire of the entertainment business.

I understand why they use Jamaican artists. One would assume that it is to attract more visitors to the Island. However I feel that the planning is not at all right. They should be working at least a year in advance to promote Creole Fest. They need to promote this better. You cannot be having an event in October and be giving line up 4 months before. Its is easier if you live in Dominica to have this notice but if you are out of state, it is not acceptable. Most people travelling to events want to see who the line up is before attending. Dominica is not 3 miles away. This is my only gripe. They do need to plan better in terms of information being sent out. I am coming home this year but to be fair this information should have been out within two three months of the last one. I would happy volunteer my services to assist. End

After 16 years we can’t handle basic marketing adequately. The fest line up has been “released”. The info on the website still shows last year schedule. How do we know the full lineup. Its a world event right, yet the info is not online. Such releases also mention the website to go to.

Reggae music is creole music. there is the english speaking creole and there is the french speaking creole. i guess you are trying to say that they should not include the english creole in the mix.

  74. No Name 2
    July 26, 2012

I am the first to support DA music but lets be real. Most Jamaicans do not know Dominican artists. Hell they do not even know where Dominica is, as unreal as it sounds. JA artists are crowd pullers. It makes good marketing/business sense. The key with Creole fest is to bring few Ja acts but big enough to pull a niche crowd while still having the majority of acts-creole, francophoe artists. One or two reggae acts cannot kill the show, it will though if they get alot of the money :-)

WCMF ( world creole music festival ) so why is it jamaican artistes are performing. Their music has nothing to do with creole or the culture and what happen to the other local bands. You this government play the first part and make it all about creole if you really want it to survive

The festival committe is also looking for a market that will bring in a large garthering to the country which will benifet the hotel sector, the rental companies the vendors etc.
Lastly ASA Banton Knows people that know people that know people that will be quiet happy to come to Dominica for the 16th W.C.M.F.

I agree fully with you..if its a creole fest why bring reggae artist when there are so many creole bands from Haiti that can be utilized and trust me I’ve been to some of their performances in the US and they’re absolutely fantastic

    • Reggae Fan
      July 27, 2012

In all seriousness – do you think that if it were only creole artists – the event would be as successful?

And for the record – it is creole fest but how many creole singing artist actually perform? you have bands like Tripple K, WCK and others that play mainly english songs, most of which makes NO SENSE and is enjoyed by mainly you Dominican folks.

Whereas, reggae music is INTERNATIONAL and appeals to a wider audience. And for your info – NOT ONLY reggae artist perform at those events in Jamaica.

Stop trying to make the name literal to the event because i know for sure some of these reggae artist are crowd drawers. I’d rather pay to go see Jr Gong, Taurus Riley and other Jamaican internationally known artist whose songs will transcend time, and whose songs teach a message as opposed to wasting time and money on worthless music. And i don’t mean all the creole, english speaking artist. I’m talking about those that make and play songs that make no sense and can only be enjoyed locally.

And that’s the truth…like it or not..it’s the reality…reggae artist are way more international for Dca than many of the local artist.

I still do not understand why is it that there are jcan artists included in this, they do not include us in their reggae feasts. How are we going to promote the advancement of the creole culture if there are other inclusions.

    • July 26, 2012

Pundit, I agree with you,I myself will wait to see the rest of the Lie Up then decide if am gonna come down, also why does it take such a while to start promoting this event when it is an annual world event?

    • Peeping Tom
      July 27, 2012

To whom would we be «promoting» the «creole culture» then, if we do not expose it to the rest of the world but keep it to ourselves? Besides, most Jamaican reggae artists also sing in creole, English-based creole.

      • Pundit
        July 27, 2012

You just showed how limited your brain is. Please do your research and read what exactly the creator of this event want to develop. Did you ever attend any of the first few years of this event??

        July 27, 2012

“Besides, most Jamaican reggae artists also sing in creole, English-based creole.”

The purpose of the Festival should be the promotion of the French Creole language, that is spoken in Dominica, Haiti, the former African French colonies etc.

I was fortunate to meet a group of people from Seychelles while travelling in Kenya and we could easily communicate in creole – French Creole, although they tend to pronounce as “z” what we would express as “s”.

If I met a Jamaican speaking Jamaican Patois I doubt I’d be able to understand a word they’re saying… can hardly understand their “English” pronunciations anyway…

While I applaud the inclusion of different forms of music like Reggae, Soca, Calypso etc at the Festival in keeping with the nature of Creole as a blend of different cultures and languages … It does seem like the Jamaicans have been getting the biggest billings.. almost like they are the headlining acts..

      • Vanessa
        July 27, 2012

        @ Rebel…

I guess you have never listened to a Dominican speak – because that’s the same way i feel somtimes “can hardly understand their “English” pronunciations anyways…”

Funny how Jamaican patois is so hard to understand but you’ll easier hear a jamaican slang than a creole slang these days
