Authorities eye mid-December for food vending in streets of Roseau

Normalcy is returning to Roseau after Hurricane Maria

The Environmental Health Department is eyeing the middle of December to allow food vendors to begin operating on the streets of Roseau.

Chief Environmental Health Officer, Ferdinia Carbon, stated that the department is faced with the decision regarding  street food vendors wanting to resume business in the capital.  However because of the destruction caused by Hurricane Maria, the conditions are not suitable for them to do so.

“We have seen improvements … we continue to look at ways we can get back persons to street vending,” she said on a radio program. “We have been trying to see what we can do in asking persons to commence vending without compromising the health and safety of the persons who are going to consume that food.”

She pointed out that the island’s legislation has to be looked at in the matter and is hoping that vending will recommence by mid-December.

“We are looking at two streets,” Carbon stated. “We are looking at King George the Fifth Street and Cork Street. We believe that these two streets are the areas that are in a better condition to the Bath Road end to the end at Old Street. So we are looking at that block from King George the Fifth Street to Cork Street, to come down Bath Road and go up Old Street. So we are looking at that block, to begin with.”

However, she said, there are a number of things vendors must do before they begin operating.

She noted that vendors must register with the Environmental Health Department and there must be an inspection of the vendor’s home.

“As we know in street vending, a lot of the pre-preparation begins at home,” Carbon noted. “We need to know what [are] the conditions at your home before we move forward for you.”

She stated that the department will work with others, such as the city council, to identify a suitable area for the vendors.

The Lord has given us a clean slate let’s not make the same mistakes Dominicans, vendors need to elevate their food stalls of the ground for sanitation reasons, the old building in Roseau that are eye sore need to be broken down, better drainage, underground electrical wires instead of poles, if we as a people as the P.M. said to build a climate resilient country, not just lip service , let us move forward and think forward not going backwards DOMINICA.

I have a problem with them cluttering the pavement and it is not only food vendors that cause obstruction. The pavements in Roseau are already so difficult to negotiate. We have a good opportunity to clean that up now, after Maria so why should we continue with that mess. I do despair at times about our continuous bad practices.

Good point Derp. Vending on the sidewalks makes the place look unsightly and forces pedestrians to walk into oncoming traffic. There should be a central place for the vendors to ply their trade, not on the sidewalks. I totally agree with the inspection of places where the food is prepared. Some of these vendors who do follow the strict food handling procedures and processes often sell their customers diarrhoea and dysentery.

Never mind diarrhoea and dysentery? How about botulism?

I support that too Paul ,
the authorities should not go about spending the funds vye key vye on temporary solutions that are not so much of an emergency but should alternatively make the relevant surveys ,inspections and enact plans to do things properly once and for all . Then we can justify the expenditures for maintenance as and when required .
Use the airport fiasco as an experience to do better . we have to learn from our mistakes . The millions and millions spent on that stupid airport ( or claimed to have spent ) would surely have seen us with a proper runway that international flights could feel safe operating from. But Millions and millions disappeared and for what , a recurring problem ? par encore, lets learn .
