Dominica begins exporting cardboard waste

The Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation (DSWMC) has begun the export of cardboard waste from Dominica.

The General Manager of the Corporation Bristol Lawrence said the new initiative is part of the reuse, reduce, recycle program.

He said other harmful products are also being exported from the country.

“Today we shipped out two containers of card board. We have been doing glass bottles for some time now and we are moving into the other plastic bottles. We have a local market for the used oil and while it is not as profitable, the aim is to get it out of the environment,” he said.

The DSWMC was established by the Solid Waste Management Act 17 of 1996, with the responsibility of developing solid waste management facilities for storage, collection, treatment and disposal of solid waste for matters incidental thereto. The Corporation commenced operations on July 1, 1997.

Trash can be burned using pollution control devices and the heat used to make steam to turn electric generating turbines, I wonder if it would be feasible in Dominica if their is enough trash generated to justify the cost of building a steam powered generating system some states in the US do that something to think about it would also keepp a majority of the garbage out of the land fill.

Are there any anti-littering laws in Dominica? If not there needs to be since plastic can kill fish dolphins and whales if they get trapped in it and the livelihood of Dominicans depends on the sea. Also, everyone knows plastic in the ground will never de-compose it is there forever.

I really don’t understand and forgive me for asking, isn’t paper bags a by-product of cardboard? so why not recycle and make paper bags and try and export the plastic bags, because as far as I know cardboard is bio-degradable and not hazardous.

I think the best solution is to sell drinks in PET bottles (glass bottles may be) and do not use plastic bags – can be paper.
If you could not exist without the plastic bottles can be sold with a deposit of …

What Dominica should also look into is getting rid of platic bags which is very bad for the enviornment. Replace with paper bags, cloth bags-which the stores can sell, or encouraging shoppers to bring their own via some sort of reward schem.

JOKERS!!! How on earth does it make sense to export waste cardboard??? Cardboard is bio-degradable. Where is the sense and how does it help the environment?
The amount of energy/fuel used collecting, compressing, transporting and then shipping it nullifies ANY environmental benefits. Even if you burned or fed a furnace with it the benefits to the environment would outstrip this half-baked NONSENSE of a scheme.

    THE JOKERS ARE WILD!

Why do we not recycle our own cardboard in Domincan which would in turn creat jobs? We are still at a lost because we are importing cardboard anyways. That move does NOT make sense and is creating jobs elswhere.

I agree 100%. Cardboard is one of the easiest things to recycle, how can it make any sense exporting it when our island population isn’t increasing but unemployment is.

Have you forgotten about the cardboard factory in Belfast? Who said we don’t make cardboard? Not as much as before but it is still in production from my knowledge. And some people like you just never hen satisfied with anything good happening in Dominica

The truth: Carboard being exported from Dominica to recycle elswhere is pure non-sense. Are you one of those advocates for NO Airport too?

Exporting waste cardboard is like taking a dump in your toilet and paying some ‘bigger’ foreign company to pull the chain…why not do it yourself or encourage an homegrown entrepreneur to get on the recycling bandwagon?

WASTE is the operative word here, because this ‘scheme’ is WASTING taxpayers money, and since we don’t have an awful lot of it (that’s money and waste cardboard for that matter) where is the justification??? It’s NOT PROGRESSIVE it’s foolish and shows lack of vision, lack of creativity, lack of initiative and a lack of forward thinking that keeps us a ‘third world’ nation despite our wealth of natural resources and educated individuals.

This is an industry, which has great potential for growth. Hopefully, there is increased investment so it can recycle things like tyres, coolant, aluminum etc, which can create further employment and raw materials for Dominica. This industry directly promotes the image of the Nature Isle and an eco friendly destination. I love it!

What a refreshing initiative! Now let’s stop the importation of used- and “seconds” vehicle tyres, which are no more than other countries’ rejects and end up in our landfill,or worse are burnt in the open without any safeguards! mr. Lawrence has my support and I’m sure of many other Dominicans, who care about their country.
