Dominica observes International Mountain Day

Dominica will the join the rest of the world in observing International Mountain Day on Saturday, December 11, 2010.

International Mountain Day is an opportunity to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build partnerships that will bring positive change to the world’s mountains and highlands.

Our indigenous people, The Kalinago, named the island Waitukubuli, meaning “tall is her body”. Dominica’s mountains soar to nearly 5,000 feet, their slopes thickly forested and beautifully crowned with rain forest and elfin woodland.

Our volcanic mountains have enabled us to offer very valuable products which help boost our tourism industry. Our bubbling hot springs which have given rise to numerous Sulphur Spring Baths in the calm surroundings of the rainforest, offer relaxing and therapeutic experiences. We also boast of the second largest boiling lake in the world, as well as cool rivers and spectacular waterfalls.

This year the day is celebrated under the theme ‘Mountain Minorities and Indigenous Peoples’. It aims to raise awareness about indigenous peoples and minorities who live in mountain environments and the relevance of their cultural heritage, traditions and customs.

with all these back and forth, of what to do and not what to do. with these mountains;:pway guard’ don,t underestimate the mountains’ JAH place them there for a purpose: Don’t let these Beautiful Sleeping Mountains vex.if these mountains cry, ( mark you; mountains can cry) with all our beliveth strange things do happen, when people lost focus with the maker as appears in Dominica. Pray my brothers, pray my sisters, Dominica needs SALVATION not Religious represantation, BUT SPIRITUAL INTERVENTION. i spiritually wish Dominica WELL.MAY 29 1979 was an example.Try not to let another like that happen, times have change, there is more urgency for people to stay in power

I am kind of surprised how some of us are so quick to see things ” a la corruption” mode. When I used the word “sell” what I meant was that some of our neighboring islands hardly have a mountain, e.g. Grand Terre, Marie Galante, Les Saintes, La Desirade, etc etc. I did not mean for Dominica to literally sell or even give away any of our mountains to anyone… Our mountains are one of the features that characterise our “NATURE ISLAND” image

      To Mango Sweet

When you said that “some of our neighboring islands hardly have a mountain” suggesting that we should “sell”, literally or not, the term “sell” “means put up for sale, put on the market, advertise and there are a few other terms” that all emphasize a commercial exchange. And “exchange” means to give something for the return of another things, whether by the means of document signatures or material handout.

A document signature of selling one of our mountains is not impossible, even if we cannot move this mountain from its standing point. It just would no longer belong to us, the people of Dominica, but to those who paid for, or took it by the means of exchange.

The same way that you did not say what you said with a literal meaning, it is the same way that I did not respond to you with a literal meaning either. Perhaps we are too quick to use the term or think “corruption”

now there is something that dominicans should share there thoughts on.The beauty and majestic appearance of these mountains manifest the grace and blessing that JAH chose Dominica to be a fresh ,beautiful and peacfull country. This should be the focus of my people. This country is bigger than most of the Island in the carribean with less people, this is like a village in some carribean island,(population wise) yet we find it so hard to work together, we now have to import support from outside. people the way we are getting on, we are going to leave Dominica in a ravage stage for our kids and that not right.Greed and selfishness among the haves are tearing the havenots apart.Dominca don’t need the drama taking place in Roseau with all these illadvices decisions, that are putting square pegs in wrong holes, the whole talk of war while the masses are suffering, and the passification withsewo and more sewo with heinekin and kabuli dominnating the atmosphere.Just listening to nelly star interview on DBS national focus. These are the kind of action Dominica needs in these times.RULING PARTY POLITICIANS ;OPPOSITION;TEA PARTY ACTIVIST; SUPPORTERS;INFORMATION ACTIVIST; and the rest ,remember your actions of distruction will leave nothing good for the future generation. Let the beauty of the mountains and the freshness of the atmosphere dominates you moral faculties and WISHING YOU A REFRESHING AND BRIGHT FEELING FORTHECHRISTMAS SEASON.AND A PEACEFULL NEW YEAR.

They need to rename “diablotin” and “au diable”. Why name a mountain after d devil? Its like errecting a satanic altar; hence giving d devil dominion over the land. Rename it and rededicate it to the God of Heaven. Also I suggest, they set a day apart to reflect on the goodness of the LORD God and to fast and pray and praise God.

Do that and watch the country take a turn for the best.
May the Lord God bless Dominica.

We have some beautiful mountains and sceneries. Its great for other countries to know what we can offer.
I fully agree with you on changing the devil names given to two of our mountains.

ya right, can a name of a mountain change people attitude? he gave us all what we needed from birth; example the ability to reason and the ability to be productive. Dream on my friend and wait for it to come from heaven, the only place it can come from is you, me, he, she, they etc.. All what we need is right here on earth to make change, we just have not recognize it, so my friend we are the one to create miracle because we have been blessed with life to do just that. everything else are myths.

The land or the mountain is not the problem, its the people!
Changing the name to Holy mountain wont change anything of the minds of the people are corrupt.
And by the way, the Diablotin is the name of a Bird.

        @ de W\

You are right. I was just about to say that it was named after the bird Diablotin because in the past, the entire mountain was the habitat of these birds… I cannot however account for “au diable” lol

de w, Thanks for shedding offering some light. The Diablotin bird was last seen on Dominica in 2007. And in case anyone wld like to see what the bird looks like you can chek the folks at Forestry.

Yes keep telling them of all we have to offer so that they may feel entitled to come have a piece for themselves, hopefully in the long run we’re not left without “all that we have to offer” altogether.

there is actually a World Rivers Day in September which we celebrate in Dominica. Its around the same time that the community of Layou has the Titiwi Festival.

We have so many that we can “sell” to some of our neighbors: Trois Pitons, Anglias, Watt, John, Turner, Diablotin, Espagnol, Au Diable, Micotrin, Patates, Plat Pye, Nicholls, Negres Marrons, Mang Peak…. and the list goes on. Some of these are in our national parks

      To: Mango Sweet

Why should we want to sell? For when we sell they come to belong to those who buy, no longer ours, even if they are on our landscape. Let us not forget how getting involved with the desire to buy and sell, increases the functions of corruption. We want those functions to decrease not increase throughout the coming years.

Morne Anglias is the one above my home village, Giraudel. That is where they have built cottages which is known as the Exoticas, not on the peak, itself, but below it. I do not know whom do they belong to, but they are very beautiful in the pictures of them.
