Dominica’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Vince Henderson, is expected to chair a meeting in Fiji that will address serious energy issues confronting the Pacific islands.

Henderson is chairman of the SIDS DOCK Steering Committee, the mechanism established by SIDS (Small Island Developing States) to catalyse the transformation of the energy sector of small islands, to increase energy security, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and generate resources for investment in adaptation to climate change.

The meeting will begin on Monday May 6 and continue till Thursday May 9, 2013.

In attendance will be representatives of the 13 pacific states that are memebrs of SIDS DOCK and observers from regional and international organizations.  The meeting is being organized by the SIDS DOCK Secretariat along with the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

“Similar to many SIDS, energy dependence is a major source of vulnerability for our 13 SIDS DOCK Pacific Members, and many remote and rural island communities have little or no access to modern and affordable energy services,” Henderson noted.

The Opening ceremony will be addressed by Henderson and Captain Timoci Lesi Natuva, Minister for Public Utilities (Water and Energy), Works and Transport, Government of the Republic of Fiji.

According to a release from Henderson’s office, the goal of the meeting is to finalise and agree on the design of the SIDS DOCK Support Programme Platform, its institutional development and operations, and more importantly, the development and financing of the SIDS DOCK Pacific Project Pipeline of 14 indicative projects with an estimated investment opportunity of US$40-million.

It will facilitate those in the Pacific who will be exploring ways for the region to take forward the outcomes of the Tonga Pacific Energy Leaders’ summit and the Pacific Energy Summit held in March.

This is exactly the slave mentality that permeates the Dominican society, the envy that lies in the comments I saw below. It is very sad.

While Dominica has its problems from economic to spiritual this is not the way to treat a fellow Dominican who is making strides on an international level. Some people need to get off the “crab in the barrel” mentality.

If the man is making strides wish him well, let’s address the issues that plagues this country with critical thought, evaluation and a sound action plan to elevate this country.

I know you ambassadors look forward to going on these UN junkets and having a good time.I also know that the UN pays all who go on these trips their daily wages for as long as these trips last.I hope you all are also not getting paid by your respective countries for those same days you are out on UN business and getting paid by the UN….In other words, not getting paid twice for the same days work.

I hope it is not a show the ambassador is making, we want fruit or substance. I hope he is not a puppet on a sting, and misleading Dominican’s to more misery than we already have. We know the whole world has problems, but these guys should know that, Dominica do not have money and hope they are not abusing the situation. The Lord who is in control in looking at every evil or good thing we do no this earth. We are going to get just recompense of reward.

But Saint Joseph is still the poorest village in all of the Dominica. I fed up with this government and I pray to God that they are removed from office through any popular means. Great on propaganda and poor on achievements.

My sentiment also. This is a government that has failed the country miserably. The people are extremely poor, but their pockets are bulging.
