New policy for forest management

Dominica's lush forest

Government has commissioned a new policy for sustainable forest management.

It follows the previous 65-year-old forest policy and demonstrates government’s commitment to forest preservation said acting Minister of Forestry Ivor Stephenson, in a statement on Monday marking the observance of Forestry week here.

When adopted the policy will set government on the road to taking collective action for ensuring that Dominica’s forests are managed in a sustainable manner, he said.

2011 has been declared “International Year of Forests” by the United Nations and Stephenson urged Dominicans to recognize the value of forests this week and steer away from actions that could jeopardize it.

“How can we bask in the fresh air and cool temperatures without seeing our forest? How can we appreciate the large amounts and the volumes of clean, clear, running water of the highest quality, without seeing our forests? We really cannot speak to eco-tourism and nature tourism as the backbone of Dominica’s economic development without seeing forests,” he stated.

Stephenson wants Dominicans to refrain from “indiscriminate” felling of trees, and “pool our resources and plant trees in our communities” to preserve Dominica’s forests.

The Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division will launch a permanent exhibition and book this week in observance of Forest Week.

I don’t understand the word “commissioned.” A new policy was done last year but not adopted??

This is the real issue for us to consider as a country. How do we as a country work towards the sustainable use of our natural resources. Amazing how genuine national development issues receive little or scant regard by the public or those who know it all.

The question must be asked. Where are the Skerrit haters? How coems they are yet tospin this one?
