Roseau gets massive clean up

Close to 40 persons from the Roseau Central constituency and other communities on island formed part of a massive clean-up campaign in Roseau on Sunday.

Leader of the United Workers Party (UWP) Lennox Linton and other members of the party were also part of the campaign.

It was led by Parliamentary Representative for Roseau Central, Joseph Isaac and a newly formed group known as the Roseau Sports and Cultural Connection.

It is being described as an apolitical mission which was triggered by the people of the constituency and nationals based on complaints about the cleanliness of the capital.

“It was a big movement of people, people of different walks of life,” Isaac told Dominica News Online (DNO). “A lot of the constituents and people of Dominica were complaining of the foul scent of Roseau and we wanted Roseau to be more environmentally friendly for them.”

He said drains were flushed in a number of streets including Hillsborough Street, Kennedy Avenue, Great Malborough Street and Cork Street.

The Roseau River bank and the Court House area on the Bayfront also got their share of cleaning, “some of them 100 percent complete, some of them 90 percent, some 60 percent…” according to Isaac.

The second phase of that project, he said, will involve the clean-up of the Boyd Avenue area among other areas in Roseau.

“So this Sunday coming we are doing the second and final phase,” he noted.

According to Isaac the effort was coordinated to bring a number different institutions together to assist, including the Roseau City Council, Dominica Solid Waste Management Corporation and the Fire and Ambulance Services.

He said support was also recieved from the government of Dominica.

“We also wrote the Prime Minister, which we got support from the government of Dominica,” Isaac noted. “They gave us water, they gave us bleach and they gave us power wash service.”

He suggested that the clean up be done on a quarterly basis “but by the institutions with the mandate to keep Roseau clean.”

He is encouraging similar programmes across Dominica.

“Two things we are going to be proposing now, one the institutions should come together after that is done,” Isaac said. “We will keep a coordinating meeting in which we will get the institutions to come together and discuss how they are going to go about doing it in the future.”

He added, “We are also proposing and encouraging different villages or different communities in Dominica to take a leaf from that page and do a similar programme.”

Cleaning drains and picking up trash is the appropriate job for uneducated troublemakers. As these hypocrites carry out these gimmicks to gain support and media attention, our great and wise Supreme Leader is out there working tirelessly to bring home the much-needed millions in order to transform our great Island Nation into a modern and industrialized powerhouse.

It is good to see MEN especially from the oppsoition doing good for our coutry. thats much better news than to hear about attemted rape by men in high places, bobols, men sleeping with their colleague wives , men in high places abandoning their wives, mysterious asain trips and fire bombimgs.

It would have been nice to see a MAN from the labour party let us say a man …. show his physical abilty and join this group of MEN in cleaning roseau. (you see lennox’s muscles?)

DNO all im saying is that this is good news and we rather be hearing about this than such things as fire bombings.

Isnt it strange that only two counselors did the cleanup in Roseau. Where was the Mayor and City clerk and other counselors. One fing for sure, this Counselor Walsh I have total respect for her. And I like what she tell Curtis, no matter which organization or group that ready to clean Roseau she on board. Others must take a page and doh play poilitics with Roseau. I Certain if it was Alo that had say for us to clean, all those Newtown, Kings Hill and Bath Estate counselors would be dere. Counselor Walsh, Smile Patrol recognize you and I believe the work you do in Community, helping the poor and underprivileged, the Nation will.

Community spirit is a very old tradition in Dominica and it is always wonderful to witness such events. However I wonder whats the motive? Many of these so called volunteers have been jumping over the garbage for years and would not clean in front their own door….. I say this because every now and then there is a deficiency in the system….capacity, funds, delays etc. etc. and sweat equity can always fill the gap. So why the same spirit could not be applied to Salisbury? These same people were behaving like cheer leaders encouraging public disorder, putting life and property at risk… disturbing the peace, setting fires, throwing stones at police and school children…..You could take the appropriate initiative until the state is ready and able… mobilize a couple pallets of cement, salaman, red beans, flour etc etc..right now there is plenty fish…. we do that all the time for sewo….we solve a problem and improve community cohesion….UWP blowing hot an cold..Whats the word

@funiti, why didn’t you go and join them or start the very same thing you talking in Salisbury instead of sitting behind your pc /laptop criticizing and complaining . you are saying they should have done the same thing in Salisbury , well Roseau is a start, so shut up. UWP will never be able to please all you , but all the lies and empty promises the Labour party giving you all it satisfies you all By the way didn’t you see people with Skerrit t-shirts in the crowd , it was not a UWP action it was the FARMERS actions.

How is that keeping Roseau clean? It was a mess and smelling under 24 hours later. All what they did in that show they put on is done and even better daily by Roseau Town Council. But because Dominicans are so nasty it doesn’t stay clean. What Isaac needs to do is stop being a hypocrite and stop playing games with Dominicans because he hungry for power. Tell the people they are to nasty and it’s time we KEEP Roseau clean and not have to waste resources trying to clean up after their nastiness. Let them know, make use of the green bins, stop throwing garbage out of vehicles etc etc. Dominicans are messing up the town faster than it is humanly possible to clean it. After all the papee shows the UWP put on the problems STILL exist.

This may not be related to his topic. However, it is & will be read widely so am piggy backing to make a point.
Listening 2 Matt in the Morning my bon jean Angelo was on with Matt & boy did he messed up once more. Back in 1995 when the Solid team of Eddo et Al accidentally won the elections., Angelo was made news editor and frequently read the 1:15 P.M news. I alled him daily to correct pronounciations of words he messed up during his reading. e has made strides in terms of confidence but the fundmentally flawed due to lack of basic education then placed self in a position where this flaws are more & more evident daily. Today on Matt he was on the topic of Salisbury. Thi guy is bold give him that but serverly flawed.
He used Taboo & the genie getting out of the bottle in one breath to make a senseless point.
Groovy wheel & come. Please D/cans why do we allow such flawed people to be on Radio in gov’t an other prominent areas? Other ejare as follows: Skerrit, The DBS news…

It’s ours let US keep it clean. Everyone should overstand, do not throw ur empty cans, bottle and rappers on the streets an drains.

Commendable effort! Good to see leadership by example and not just talk. Kudos to all. But lets face it. This one off thing won’t make a dent in the problem. Just like we clean our homes regularly, such activities in the city has to be part of the regular maintenance routine. We should not wait until repeated outcries for such to be undertaken. Lets do the right thing all the time. But more importantly prioritize so its done as part of daily expectations.

Absolutely fantastic! So goood to see true born Dominicans going out and keep the city clean. Job well done, Cheers!
    Some suggestions:
    1) Roseau needs a make over, to many old and dirty buildings
    2) policies to be put in place to be tough on those who litter the city and for the mechanics who use the streets as their garage..
    3) The Roseau river needs to be drenched.. Heavy equipments especially between the bridges…. The government has neglected the city therefore citizens must take back the city….. come together and fix the city
    4) Get tough on land owners and house owners – to many places are dumping sights in the city
    5) Business owners must play a greater role in keeping the city clean
    6) Train and hire city wardens: They can patrol to catch those who litter and charge them; they can also sort out traffic woes in the city
    7) Government and City council need to come down on derelict vehicles owners..
People need to hold the government responsible.. Tax payers…

However, the moment I saw the headline of this article “Roseau gets massive clean up”, without reading the article I knew if Roseau or anywhere in Dominica was going to get a clean up, it had to be organized by UWP. The state of Roseau and anywhere in Dominica after 15 years of DLP is discouraging to say the list. I hope Portsmouth, the second town, and DLP potato garden is next on the card. Lets hope the little UWP did in Roseau will encourage more cruise ships to come to Dominica. Soon UWP will go and clean up the mess of the DLP in the cabinet and Dominica by extension.

Bravo you valiant and caring citizens, and thanks for a job well done.

  54. May 19, 2015

I am happy to read this. Very. very happy.

Our responsibility is to keep it that way. One of the things which Roseau needs is public washrooms–maybe one or two on every streets.

I truly believe the stench, which we are referring to, comes from human urine–as people, especially the drunken me who park there pee-pee any place.

I don’t know if it is still there, but in 2008, when I was in Dominica, I will never forgot what happened to my nostrils–when decided I was going to stand behind a “rum-shop” which was on the bank of the Roseau River–to watch the clean flowing water; something I love to do when I walk the park roads in Toronto

In Toronto, if a man was caught by the Police exposing himself on the City Street to urinate, that man would be arrested and charged. Toronto has more than 3 000 000 people, but it is kept clean because of the law of cleanliness which rules the people–we need those rules in Dominica on the whole–not just for Roseau.

In the words of the now infamous “John” until we educate ourselves we will continue to fall for anything thrown our way. While this initiative is to be commended, let us remember that in this POOR country, we pay quite a number of people every month to do what these volunteers had to undertake.

We have sanitation, city council, and mayor being PAID to keep the place clean. If they are incapable, they should make it abundantly clear that what sort of assistance so that ongoing measures can be put in place.

Until we can be honest with each other about the needs of our country, we will continue to remain caught in a trap of backwardness, while a tiny few people walk away with what little wealth can be created. Something is VERY wrong for those in charge of a micro-city like Roseau to have difficulty keeping it clean!

It is politically interesting that this is publicise like first time Roseau get clean up, Note Rosseau City Council, Government, Jaycees, Leo Club, Lions Club, Terry Raymond and the youth Division, the group that the Guiyave lady had, the previous Mayor, and other concern citizens team up to clean up Roseau also there is a guy religiously every 4:00am on mornings cleaning around town, a man was powering washing Roseau the other day no body recognized those people or even acknowledge them like that.

When they ask you to put out the white goods etc all over Dominica no filming or noticing. Stop putting politics in everything.

Stop distracting Dominicaqns we know what is going on. I heard Government has a big project coming for the City of Roseau. All you hear that and running in front. People not stupid again. Stop that political gimmick eh working at all

Let me agin thanked the Groups and peolple from all communities who clean up their areas without…

The motive is a cleaner and healthier town, you moron.

      May 19, 2015

The motive is obvious (well it is to any one with a sense of pride).

We should be thinking of how we can help, not for politics, but for a cleaner and better Roseau/Dominica.

the motive was to clean the streets of Roseau.. what question is that…

    • Merlot
      May 19, 2015

The motive is that IGNORANT A like you will be able to walk thru the streets of Roseau and not hold your breath. The motive is that visitors to our shores can go back to their homelands and give positive remarks about the condition of the nation’s capital instead of reporting how they were touring a DUMP. The motive is that it’ll give people like you a reason to bitch as you normally do about anything POSITIVE happening in Dominica simply because it’s not ordered by your God Skerrit. DUMBASS. You’re probably one of those thinking Dominicans should wait till it’s November 4th to clean up the island too…

      May 19, 2015

The motive is to show Skerrit and the DLP that it will take the UWP to clean the mess of the DLP in the cabinet. Skerrit and the DLP have messed up everything in Dominica and it will take UWP to lean up their mess

Am happy to see this although on FB Thompson made it more political than not but in a way I don’t really care it will look presentable to outsiders I said that on DNO not to long ago that we should not have to wait till November to clean up the place, great job Isaac, it is said it takes a village to raise a child. ,

If it is being led by a politician and a political party…isn’t it by nature political? Its sad that anything related to politics is assumed to be negative. Like everything else in the world, humans determine if something is ultimately of benefit or ill to the world…so I love this POSITIVE POLITICAL clean-up campaign! Now that the streets are clean, we need to clean the “house”.

Good Initiative. This also shows that we can make dominica a better place once we all come together and prevent political affiliations from seperating us. Remember dominica is for our kids not Skerrit. We will only do things because of a photo op, to be seen. Lets do because we know its the right thing to do. Lets do because we love domincia. We abroad instead of critizing 24/7 why not help to make dominica a better place. Why not turn the negative to positive.
