Feasibility studies completed for modern cargo port at Canefield says Skerrit

Donkey Beach, Canefield, proposed site for location of modern cargo port

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that the feasibility studies for the construction of a new modern cargo port located at Canefield on Donkey Beach are concluded.

He said during a radio programme recently that in addition, the government has put plans in place to build a Cruise Village that will replace the Wood Bridge Bay Port.

“You will also see the construction of a new modern cargo port down at Canefield on Donkey Beach. We will build a port there; the feasibility studies are concluded,” he said.

According to Skerrit, his government is working with its international cruise partners and others who will provide guidance as to some of the things they would like to have included.

He said the country is moving to establish a duty-free Cruise Village in order to attract clients from the French neighbouring islands.

“Because one of the things I believe we need to capture is the million-plus citizens who are resident in Guadeloupe and Martinique who would prefer to come to Dominica to shop because their Euro would have some strength and be able to buy duty free stuff and go back to Martinique and Guadeloupe,” Skerrit explained.

He continued, “We see it happening there but if we have a more structural approach to that, we can benefit much more than that.”

Skerrit went on to say that the Ferry Terminal will be moved to that cruise village, “so even when the cruise season is off, we will still have tens of thousands of people coming through that port and the vendors would now have a year round operation rather than just a seasonal operation and therefore increase their income and increase their opportunities.”

He indicated that the government is working on a strategy with one of the cruise lines and some of it will require legislation, “and we will articulate this in the weeks and months ahead.”

“In the medium term with the construction of the Cruise Village we will see our cruise numbers increase to 600,000 and in the long-term, to take it to one million..,” he noted. “That’s our aim.”

“Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has announced that the feasibility studies for the construction of a new modern cargo port located at Canefield on Donkey Beach are concluded.”
“He said during a radio program recently that in addition, the government has put plans in place to build a Cruise Village that will replace the Wood Bridge Bay Port.”
This is how Skerrit does fool them. He announces the completion of the feasibility study in one sentence, then he tells them about “Plans” for a cruise ship village in the next without announcing cost, time frame etc. This is a brilliant “Vote Catching Scheme.”
I recalled “Rayburn” telling the same “Lie,” before his portfolio was changed. Now that “Mass in de cemetery” put his business outside, Skeritt telling the same lie once more. Great Job! Keep fooling those Dotish.

My goodness for crying out loud; only one cargo ship/boat can be seen offloading at the Woodbridge Bay Port on any given day; so tell us mr. double (Dr) PhD; what are you building more Port for? is it to accommodate the Russian Nuclear Submarines and Battle ships you and your partner Muduro planning to bring to the Caribbean.

    • January 14, 2019

….. To accommodate more ships docking at the same time.

Satan’s job is to lie and decieve. In fact here is the Apostle Paul on Satan and his servants in 2 Cor. 11:14-15 “But I am not surprised! Even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no wonder that his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness” 2 Cor. 11:14-15.

Again which foreign company is being contacted to do these works? Are there no local consultant capable of handling such a study? But moreover why canefield? Is there space for expansion since this area seems rather small for a cargo Port and cruise village? What about the operations of PH Williams and Argos? Whoever these consultants are they seem to be quite incompetent cause how are you mixing those activities together, cruise village along with cargo Port not a good match also the mining activities of PH Williams. Then again my people are gullible and it’s election season I guess this is the campaign strategy…smh!

Donkey beach is the last remaining recreational facility we have in Roseau, Rock a way is taken over by edghill and argos, not everyone wants to or can go right Mero to go beach, please leave Donkey Beach alone. Instead of destroying the beach, it should be improved upon to make it a tourist attraction.

The only time that I’ll believe anything that is said by the veteran deceiver is when the project is complete and handed over to the people. Mr. Skerrit is so mendacious that his lying has reached stratospheric levels, it is legendary.. He has now been elevated from Dr.² to Dr.³. The first Doctorate(honorable), the second Doctorate (honorable), the third Doctorate (lying). He’s now Doctor Cube.

Can anyone verify seeing anyone on the ground doing these studies re: the airport and now the cruise village. I for one have not seen or heard of anyone besides the PM seeing a team of consultants on the ground doing any work. What are the name of these firms carrying put these windows where are their local offices base. Just asking cause it seems the PM is the only person who knows

Nobody has seen anybody or anything. All these things are only happening in Skerrits mind and strangely enough they reappear roughly every 5 years. The PM of DA lives in a phantasy world and the majority of his supporters go daily to their local rum shack and share his dreams. At least once a month they travel to Roseau and pick up more rum money from the financial centre. Don’t they live well in Dominica!

I would not be surprised if sometime next week he will be on DBS and tell the people of DA that they will start drilling for oil 10 miles east of Grandbay soon and that they found Gold in the upper reaches of the Roseau river. Immediately after the next election is won, all DLP supporters need registering only once a year and pledging their loyalty to Skerrit in exchange for a monthly annuity of $1,200.00 being paid to them. His supporter went crazy shouting, Hail Skerrit we never have to work again but we’ll still survive. We love our millionaire PM and his rich ministers.

Mr. Skerrit, your claims lack specificity. What has happened to the cost, time frame, names of the international partners, the drawings. As usual, you are politically profiteering from bogus promises. The people demand to see hard, raw facts not sugary, cotton candy words. For most Dominicans, the days of swallowing your fanciful lies, without even chewing on them, are over.

  28. January 11, 2019

With many proposed schemes, whether it be housing development, cruise village or cargo port, I find myself not so much for or against the basic need, but in doubt as to the amount of critical thought that has been given to design and location.

  29. Dominican

This is an old chestnut, based on CHL Consulting report of 2013. It was shelved because of the enormous costs involved. Rayburn Blackmoore took it out of the cupboard again as an election promise in Nov. 2014 and Parry Bellot commented on it in length in the Sun in Dec. 2015.
    My questions remain as then:

    – what happens to the Canefield industrial estate, which is the location for this project in these plans?
    – what happens to Canefield airport? It was originally built after hurricane David as an emergency airfield, since Melville Hall had become practically inaccessible and I would submit that given our topography, we need to keep it for the very same reasons unless we build the proposed new international airport somewhere along the west coast.

I hope this plan has not just been dusted off again as an election prop, to be put on back on the shelve once it has served its purpose and a victory has been secured.

How many things is Skerrit going to build before the next election? What’s next, a marina in Giraudel?

This is such an old tired game. How many times have I heard that same old song?

I remember E.O Leblanc promising our village to construct a feeder road during the 1970 election campaign. The man went as far as delivering a bulldozer to the top of the village. As soon as the elections were over and DLP won, they came and picked up their bulldozer. They did not even bother to move it after they dropped it off. It was many years later they finally constructed that road.

Whats wrong with this guy again. Who tell the PM you can have a seaport in Canefield or a cruise ship terminal. Wait April May for him to see heavy ground swells in this area. If its not airport is seaport next it will be highway from Roseau to the airport or a fly over from Canefield to Loubiere.
    Lets pray for Dominica.

National Elections must be on the horizon, the practice is clear…..The announcement of Fanciful projects which are necessary but which the government is unable to deliver always parades before a general election is called. This gives the government a platform of promises on which they can campaign and simultaneously gives them a rod to chastise a new government who fails to deliver on these fanciful projects. Skeritt’s genius mind is again at work, fooling the people of Dominica and filling the opposition with Dread as they question their ability to deliver on these projects.

Additionally, I notice Dr Fontaine is no longer a senator and Mr Linton indicated that Mr Fontaine was contemplating resigning from the position. Does that mean that Mr Fontaine is only interested in Dominica when he is out of a job? Team Dominica, take note!!!
