Leona, the only female still in the competition and The Wave, are the first-time finalists among the nine who have been selected to meet reigning monarch Dice in the final of the 2014 calypso monarch competition.
The nine calypsonians who got the nod at the semi final held at the Newtown Savannah on Saturday night are: Beno, Boople, Bobb, Black Diamond, Hunter, Picky, Web, Leona and The Wave.
The 2014 calypso monarch final is scheduled to be held on the 1st of March.

ve I listened to the analysis at the end of the show and I must say that there is too much politics in calypso. Constructive criticism Mr. Jno. Baptiste: you are entitled to your opinion, however, it may not be the right one. You stressed on Chess’s omission so much in a positive manner, leaves a rational thinking person to wonder. We must stop being instigators of division.

After reading the many comments posted, can the populace join me in advocating that the judges let the public know where their favorites failed? Is it possible to show the criterion which should be improved for future performances? Can the Calypso Association help in this area? We the public just want to know what could have or should have been in place to allow our ‘favorite’ participant to move on to the finals. just a thought
Are the Judges really saying that they don’t approve of the Chinese population in Dominica? Is that the reason why Jay-Dee did not make it to the finals?Dominicans including the nine judges really do not like the Chinese man. This was no way to admit to this. Jay-Dee should have had a place in the finals. By the way he wrote his own song.

Indeed, Dominicans have common sense. After reading comments on DNO last week, I thought that Leona would be booed at the finals. If there were boos they were extremely insignificant. The cheers were deafening. Well done Dominica!!! Congrats Leona.
forks we all have out opinions as who should and shouldn’t make it into the finals however there are a certain number of signers how can be there, not because we maybe friends and family of those guys should mean that they should be in there just be happy for the ones who make it and let those who didn’t go back to the drawing board for next year there mite be one in the big show congrats to the finalist and may the better man or woman win

Strange occurrences at that Camp. One slapped one in authority. Another one, haughty and proud in defiance walked out without singing and they are in the finals? Those organizers who are in authority have a severe problem.
What is wrong with you? Do you not have certain principles and regulations how those calypsonians should conduct themselves at the Camp?
I am not impressed whatsoever. Is this what D/cans get for their money and time? Those two people should have been disqualified for what they did. You should have allowed those whom you disqualified to go into finals. They seem to be popular among the majority of the viewers and the readers on DNO.

It is difficult to understand what went wrong with JD. Beno was stiff and boring..no crowd appeal. …no melody. JD executed his product beautifully. poor judging if you ask me.
daddy chess song was good but I must say I have seen better performances but that song is far more better than that liat song. Chris B was nervous and you could hear it in his voice therefore the song was not delivered in the best of ways; it was lacking. Bobb in my opinion should not have made it and daddy chess should have replaced him but then again he delivered his song better. Hunter did a fabulous job and I think his song is not getting as much credit as it should be getting; very powerful lyrics. boople idek but he delivered his song if chris b had done better he could have easily taken his place. beno , the lyrics , the clarity , the deliverance , the melody was all on point plus he has a nice and clear voice which adds to it. Webb the same goes. Picky that was some raw calypso vibes right there not many calypsonions can pull that off I think because he write his own songs therefore when it comes to deliver it comes from somewhere deep likewise for calysonions such as hunter and scrunter. Leona, that song is too popular to not make it into the finals. Wave, the man delivered his song point blank. BlackDiamond was on point vocally, lyrically , deliverance , clarity, just on point.

Daddy Chess should definitely have placed before
Bob and Picky. He had a much bigger song. Many of these songs are small and only suited for a small Dominican audience… These small songs are not able to break the barrier to a bigger Caribbean audience. They are just about political Mapuis. Daddy Chess song has appeal to a world audience..

Chess song was not all that this year which was disappointing afetr years of always being in the top 5. I really thought jammer B and Explosion would have made it but the 9 they chose was not a bad decision at all.

Do Yow Want The Black Diamond for King?
Given last night results; my choice is between Hunter and Black Diamond.
Hunter calypso is great and deserve to be a winner. It is already a winner. Crown or no crown that Calypso can be sung anywhere and can be used in schools and community agencies around wider audiences. That is not a calypso that will remain in Dominica after the carnival season is over. I await the second song.
But since Hunter has already been King 3 times and a true professional. Do I want Black Diamond to be king? Yes I do! Black Diamond must be crowned Calypso king, 2014; that is if he can deliver his second calypso as well on the day of the competition.
Again Black Diamond calypso is not only a calypso for Dominica. That one also is a teaching calypso. it is not a beff calypso it is a real and truthful calypso, one which the young people and the not so young can learn from.
Our artists need tunes that can make them make money and be recognize not only in Dominica and surely not only for a few days in the carnival season and then that’s all there is.
We need to allow calypso to grow and give the artists a reason to continue that culture and not stifle their growth by having them believe no matter how good they do, it is never good enough.
Please come with a great second song Black Diamond. I would really like you to be king.
I doubt Leona will have an equally good second song. In fact I would be pleasantly surprised if she does. I wish her luck. But I believe Black Diamond has a better chance of having a good second song.

A mammoth job for the judges who to my mind got it totally right last night. Only Chris B seemed to make their job a bit easier by eliminating himself. While Jaydee easily has the best written song for the season, his rendition and delivery leave much to be desired. Sorry Daddy Chess perhaps your Mama tribute will do better at the Testing the Best show, closer to Mother’s day. Picky delivered like the veteran that he is. Not a fan of Beno or Bobb but call it as you see it, they delivered. Leona and Webb were a sure thing, and Wave was a pleasant surprise. More Kaiso!!!

It was really a tight show. To choose 9 out of 20 is not easy. Sorry about Daddy Chess and JD; to me they were of quality supreme, far above that of Bueno. Bueno song does not even suit him, he is arrogant like transetter and was spinning hot and cold at renegade’s spewing hatred and division in the midst his utterances. Son of a gun, they must be brother and brother.

who cares??? calypso is another tool used to divide the people. all it does is give maypwe and gossip about each other and we see this crap as entertainment. Like my comments or not, its the truth. no longer do we have a slave master, we turn it upon ourselves without taking note of its effects. Social commentary…is a nice way of saying “maypwe and gossip”. But really then again that is all we do here so no wonder it is popular.

Congratulation to the Nine (9) finalists who made it last night to go to the grand final on March 1, 2014 and I there say best wishes in going forward. I did my own judging while the show was going on and I got seven (7) correct out of the nine (9) namely: Leona, Web, Bobb, Pooplay, Hunter, Wave and Black Diamond
The judges had a hard task to select nine (9) out of twenty (20) and they have to be commended but I believe that there were other stronger songs then that of Beno and Picky
The Semi Final was a very good show and all the calypsonians did their best except for two (2) so we can look forward to a very grand final on March 1,2014

I didn’t see nor hear the finals but I had already made my own prediction of the finalists based on the lyrics and composition of the songs. I did not expect Seye, Daddy Chess , Black Diamond. Although I don’t think that Hunter’s song is captivating (the topic is one that is emotional but the song itself – the melody , musical and lyrical arrangement is not impacting) nevertheless Hunter is a master on stage , great voice contro , stage control and those qualities wil enhance his chances anytime any day. In order for Hunter to become a threat to the reigning monarchy he must seriously consider utilizing other writters and changing up his arrangers.
With regards to the new faces Leona and Wave – no surprise tree at all. I thought that the songs that could make it to the finals would be “you just come by Chris B. the song has a wonderful combination of lyrics and elodic flow and Chis B seem to handle the song quite comfortably.
Lugaz – I like Lugaz passion and zeal I believe the composition was not within his range at all. The song in itself was OK doh the topic may have brought some awareness to the plight of the nurses but somehow the song did not capture people’s interest. Jacko it seems like Lugaz is much more comfortable with a bouncy rhythm ,ie I cyan eat concrete.
Although Jammer B messed up at the quarter finals and I felt that he should have been cut I realized that his song is a very strong one and I was hoping that he could get through the finals.the Black Diamond senior also has a good song and I thought that he was bound for the finals As well.
Finally the Bob was border line and like Hunter his song is relatively weak but Bob is a master on stage and that makes a difference for an experienced performer like Bob. In all fairness I would throw Daddy Chess into that category of Bob and Hunter – border line to bad songs but great performers.

it’s time we make some changes in judging for next year bring persons that dont have other interest we need judges that can do a good job and dont allow themselves to be influence by politic or politicians .We lost a lot of good calypsos this year.
Someone is missing. How come you can have WEB twice. He wasn’t even supposed to be in the finals in the first place. What happen to Lugas and Beetle J . Bob’s song makes a lot of nonsense. Who in Dominica Calypso tries to sing like any Trini…his song is confusing and he tried to con Dominicans by appealing to our nationalism feeling and that took some judges. I am happy for Picky. He is very deserving and I don’t know what happen to China Man and Chris B made a lil error and they cut his throat. I have seem better semis than that.

picky delivered his song and if you listen well to the lyrics he mastered it like a veteran calypsonian would have done . Pus everyone knows picky is a character, but the man writes his own songs and deliver’s them in such a way not many calypsonions can. Jaydee’s song was good but the performance lacked what picky’s own had. plus his articulation was not the best. Picky is a natural calyposonian jaydee is not its simple as that.
