Meshach Hamilton Linton

Former Educator, Credit Union President and Senator, Meshach Hamilton Linton passed away at his residence earlier this week.

He was 87 and ailing for some time.

Linton, a 1999 recipient of the Sisserou Award of Honor, was a trained educator. He served as Principal at a number of educational institutions around the island and also as an Education Officer.

He is a former Chairman of the Dominica Growers Association, a foundation member and first President of the Marigot Credit Union.

He also served as a senator in the Dominica House of Assembly from 1980-1985 and was a member of a number of statutory boards including the Board of Education, the Housing and Loan Board, the Electoral and Boundaries Commission and the Public Service Commission.

The late Meshach Hamilton Linton will be laid to rest in an official funeral on Saturday March 16th at the Marigot Methodist Church.

My deepest condolences to the family of the man who selected me for the Common Entrance Exam, the very first year he came to Grand Bay. He personally tutored that class after regular school hours, combining the boys with the girls from the girls’ school. Yes, in his day, Grand Bay had a Boys’ School and a Girls’ School before the Canadian Government of PM Pierre Trudeau gave us that wonderful primary school. Mr Linton was a firm and hard working principal.

I was also fortunate to have known three of his sons who were at the Dominica Grammar School when I went there in 1971. Bently Linton and I, sat in the same classes, 1J (Ms. James), 2M (Mr Pat Martin)etc. Reid and Lennox Linton were in the upper classes. It’s amazing how the memmories of our days at DGS come rushing back through the death of this educator. Charles Pierre, Julien Prevost, Davis Letang, Kinnard Leatham, Eddie Delsol, Thomas Gregoire, among others, were our contemporaries. May he continue to inspire us all.

Seems like he made a very good and quiet contribution to Dominica’s growth and development. It would have been nice to know for which Party he served as a Senator and member of the Statutory Boards.

Let’s see if anyone will ask for his funeral to be carried live on DBS!

It would not be my wish; however, If the funeral of any Dominica citizen deserves to be carried live on DBS Radio, I believe it should be one who dedicated his entire life to serving the people of the country. In the early days of his teaching career, the man walked from his village of Marigot, to wherever he was assigned.

That is loyalty, and for this reason alone perhaps he should be honored for his loyalty to the people and country.

Those were the rough days in our country when transportation were very scares , only the Colonial Public Works Depart had some dump trucks, with the exception of a few Estate owners who had a car, and a truck which could not travel island wide, since there were no island wide roads linking the entire island.

The situation changed around the time the road from the North joining the South was completed.

I remember when he was transferred to Wesley, where he taught for a short period, he bought his first motor cycle, I was about seven years old then.

A legend in his time; he haled from a humble beginning born a humble family, perhaps he is the oldest last of remaining Linton Klan of the old generation, the his oldest surviving aunt died last year in Wesley, my grandmother, and her three sisters were his biological aunts.

May his soul rest in peace!

Fet you forgot to mention the perks dereived from being a teacher in those days lolhahahhahahahhe certainly enjoed them voluntarily or other wise you know what the perks were then it would bring about a down cry as it does today.
Also a person answere a question asked previously which was taken to task.He was a DFP senetor then a convert to a ahfouahwee in 1988.
So they can pretend to be anything today. He and wife taught me at school also like so many of us were.Good teachers they were more so Mr Linton but complex and controversial not totally inocent of the acusations. Deny it

      • March 10, 2013

” Mr Linton but complex and controversial not totally inocent of the acusations. Deny it”

You know we are all just simply humans, and no matter what we do; even on the day when we put our best foot out there is always someone ready and waiting to step on it!

No matter who we are, even if we kiss the ground some people walk on they will develop some concept of their own; all one have to say is this well Francisco did such and such a thing, true or false; allegations and counter allegations will fly, and before you know it half truth becomes the truth, and lies too are made into truth.

I have an idea of what you are getting at, however, the man is now dead, he was not a perfect individuals, none of us alive are perfect, and there is such a thing as forgiveness, even I have forgiven him for something he refused to do which had a direct effect on me, my late father and I spoke about it and simply put it to rest.

I suggest you find it in you heart to simply forget what you heard about him, if there is one plus in his life, let that supercede all of the negatives.

As for his wife I encounter her closely twice in my life; once when she was a student at the Leeward island Teachers Training Collage on the island of Antigua, I entertained her; Alma John, and a few others at my home one Saturday, the next time I encountered her was when she attended my dad funeral in Wesley: a relative of mine was playing the organ like a kid, she brushed him aside, and took over, and almost tore that organ apart, as she rock the place as she played.

I find her to be a very nice lady if she plays the organ as well in Meshach’s funeral,as she did for my dad, his soul will indeed rest in peace.

Potance: I believe I have a slight idea who you might be; however, I only wish to remember the good things about him; I urge you to do the same!

    • Joe
      March 8, 2013

O Stress, note the BIG difference between the two:

ML was a SENATOR and is having an OFFICIAL FUNERAL you know what that mean? It means the man was an OFFICIAL STATEMAN… DBS has absolutely NO choice but to carry it live if it is so requested by his family.

Now FF was never an OFFICIAL STATEMAN although he worked well throughout his lifetime developing Dominica like alot of us do…. UWP never saw it fit to make him a SENATOR and am wondering why..

DBS is a STATE own radio and therefore cannot go around carrying funerals live for all and sundry it must never set that precedent… I DID NOT SUPPORT THE PM FOR OVERRIDIING THE BOARD DECISION.

I supported Blessings that day when he said Skerrit is a Dictator in the making!!! Skerrit must be careful in his decisions, i wonder if he even spoke to a Director before he override them!!

The Board was correct in their decision and i supported them irrespective of all the foolish hoolala that was happenning on Q!!!!!

Served as a senator in the Dominica House of Assembly between 1980 to 1985? On which side was he? Was it the Opposition Labour Party or was it the Freedom Party? Why the shame to say? Was UWP around at that time?

I can tell you’re some kid or infant, since you do not know the history of Dominica’s political parties. I bet you like to be front and center defending what you know nothing about too. Then again, you could be an adult, who like many others…clueless and lack adequate knowledge about your own country’s history….all you know is one thing…and one thing only.

    • March 8, 2013

Whosoever you are, no one should have to worry about you, I have suggested in the past that you are such an idiot that the question mark is your name.

I do not believe there is anybody in Dominica, as ignorant, dumb, dirty, and outright stupid as you are!

Where do people like you come from?

You are so stupid it seems you are walking on your senses, you even question your very own existence; thus your name is: ?????

Responding to you is not an indication that I am dignifying your stupid comment!

People are extending condolences to the family of a departed soul, just a reminder, because I am not sure if you understand what is happening here on oui!

      Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!
