Nine individuals from the small fishing village of Anse-de-Mai on the north eastern part of the island will be honored at the annual feast of St. Peter’s this weekend.

A fish night from 7:30 pm on Friday will jump start the event, along with activities ranging from fishing tournaments on Saturday, a sports day and an awards ceremony on Sunday.

President of the St. Peter’s Committee, Peter Winston, told DNO that persons to be recognized include the youngest serving fisherman, the longest serving fisherman, the most dependable fisherman, the longest serving groups of fishermen, the longest serving diver, the youngest serving diver and the fisherman recording the biggest catch for the year.

Additionally the longest serving captain to Marie Galante and the longest serving fisherman from Dominica’s shores to Marie Galante will also be recognized.

Winston said the latter two are part of a collaboration between the committee and French island.

He also mentioned that a small exhibition featuring fishing equipment will also be held.

He pointed out that  other activities taking place during the weekend include fishing tournaments and other competitions which will earn the competitors’ prizes.

“On Saturday, during the day, we are going to be doing fishing tournaments, we will be doing some little diving competitions and fishing competition using small boats as well,” he noted.

Saturday will climax with a band splash, featuring the Fanatick Band, Midnight Groovers, Asa Bantan and Kubuli Big Truck Jam.

On Sunday there will be a church service and the blessing of the fishing boats, sports day and the awards ceremony in the evening, according to Winston.

He said the committee is depending on funds from the feast to purchase a well needed ice machine to serve the needs of the fishermen in the community.
