Armour-Shillingford wants more gov’t support for Miss Dominica (with photos)

Government support for Miss Dominica is essential, Armour-Shillingford says
Government support for Miss Dominica is essential, Armour-Shillingford says

What are the expectations when a local beauty is crowned Miss Dominica and thrust into the spotlight both nationally and regionally?

Well, she is expected to make stage appearances. She is expected to be well groomed, looking her best at all times, but as the saying goes, ‘beauty comes at a price.’

A price, that Miss Dominica 2013, Lesslasa Armour-Shillingford, thinks should be handled by the state. As a matter of fact she is calling for a special budget to be set aside by the government just for that.

Speaking at the Venezuelan Institute on the observance of Women’s Day earlier this week, Armour-Shillingford said the government has done a great job in preparing local ladies for regional and international pageants, however more support is needed.

“I do see the need for the government to improve in supporting our Miss Dominica,” she said.

Armor-Shillingford remarked that she was asked to give her opinion on how the government can contribute towards the development of women in the field of pageantry.

“My answer is through support,” she said. “For my year as Miss Dominica I was expected, like most other successful past queens, to make numerous appearances and to be immaculately groomed, detail oriented, talented, intelligent, confident, the picture of health, dedicated and elegant. Yet no budget was put aside for the purchasing of outfits, the much needed makeup, the transportation to the events, the gym membership and the list goes on.”

She is suggesting a makeup artist and a hair stylist to be part of the Miss Dominica staff team to make sure the queens are completely taken care of.

“Of course it goes beyond that,” she noted. “Preparations for speaking are also elements that they do need to support our present queens in.”

She believes that training for pageants is necessary and should continue but outside support is essential “for Miss Dominica to be truly exceptional.”

Armour-Shillingford also noted that she would have been more successful as Miss Dominica if she had received more time and support from the government.

Lesslassa am not sure if you would have been more successful if the Government had provide the long list you mentioned however i do agree with you on the part where government should assist more. If you are goin out there to represent Dominica the government of Dominica will equally if not benefit much more than the person on show if she had ever win such a big show like “Miss World”. Don’t see why she should be providing a budget to go out there and represent Dominica. I also believe the Government provide such as hotel, airfares and others the private sectors should come on board too. Have the QSOC seek more assistance in making sure those needs are met, Government is just part of it!

See too many pageants in Dominica. If Lesslasa get a budget, guess what? Miss and Madam Wob Dwiyet, Miss Red, Mr. Dominica, Junior Queen, Princess, Miss North, South, East, West , Dice, Road March King, toot chien avec toot Chat will be asking for budget. During her interview in “Journey to the throne” she was boasting of how health conscious she is. Did she have a gym membership ? Then why not renew it. Why does she need a budget for make-up when she talked so much about being natural! Girl give us a break….While you asking for budget from Government for luxury, there are people in Dominica who can’t even afford nutritious meals for their children. Lesslasa “ou par feb!”. You not easy nah! That is exactly what happens when you are born with a golden spoon in your mouth. The event was in “Observance of Womens Day” why not focus on legitimate issues facing women. Equal pay for equal work, Domestic Violence, etc. That tells me it is all about you. Having said that, I must say that I am one who supported you throughout your reign and was proud of your success, but it is getting to your head or you have the wrong speech writers.

    March 28, 2014

After my reign, all I wished for was for the Carnival Queen to be treated with a little bit of RESPECT.

Now we have the queen who was treated with the most respect, admiration, recognition, prizes, invitations, trips, full scholarship to a University of her choice…..etc. asking to be supported by by the Government, for make-up, Shopping, gym membership… etc. What an odd turn of events.

Hello, Lassa did well and she made us proud; hats off to her , but we do have a new queen so start to give her roles she too can play her part dutifully. Stop stealing the lime-light from Francine.

    • LOL!
      March 27, 2014

Don’t be a hater please. Lassa made a name for herself and Dominica, Francine time will come but She can never be a Lassa. Lassa was invited to this function not Francine. There is absolutely no comparism in the two personalities. You people are just envious of nothing. A queen is groomed from years of preparation through life’s journey not just a dream, a good sponsor to make you shine and you have arrived.

    • Sweet pea
      March 28, 2014

she is here requesting additional help for Francine and future queens moving forward and your’re here talking about light stealing? isnt there enough light to go around? as a past queen she is expected to help out anyway she can and if she still has a voice and influence then i don’t think she should just sit back and relax in the shade…

  11. duh
    March 27, 2014

They do that every year. Overshadow the existing queen. why are we here debating over Leslassa when really Francine should have been the one invited to this event. I never saw what the big fuss was over her anyway. Why do Dominicans elevate people that already think they are better than them and afterwards they cry about it. Common sense would tell us that if someone is in a better position than you, then you don’t help to make them even greater to walk all over you even more than they already were. That is why I have stayed out of all the leslassa cheering when all of you were going crazy last year.

I definetely support the point of view that we have more important things we could spend money on but I think alot of the people here are missing the point. Whether or not Ms. Shillingford could afford it is irrelevant. The point is that the next/current queen may not be able to. If there is a standard being imposed on her, then yes, she should receive support. That said, the gov’t may not be the best source of that money, possibly a private organisation would be better.

Sidenote: I can’t help but question why the comments are so laced with judgements and hate. This girl is actually a very very decent person, mabye we really should focus less on people’s surnames in D/ca.

wow…that is why we as black people will stay behind. cause when others are “up” or doing well we dont celebrate their success because we think that will just make them even better than us. this young woman represented dominica, and very well too. and from what i can tell she is down to earth and doesnt think herself to be more than others. so you decided that because shes already up there youre not going to support her cause that will just make her better. people like u are the reason why black people stay behind. its such a sad truth though. smh

Miss Dominica is representing Dominica where ever she goes. I do think the Government should provide some assistance. It does take time and lots of money to go to these places. The more she wins the more publicity the country gets. Some of you people really shouldn’t be commenting on issues you don’t know about.

“As a matter of fact she is calling for a special budget to be set aside by the government just for that.”(Lesslasa Armour-Shillingford).

Government is a term generally used to describe the formal institutions through which a land, and its people are ruled. Hence; to govern is to rule. Government is comprised of institutions, and processes that rulers establish to strength and perpetuate their power, or control over a territory, and its inhabitants.

A government may be as simple as an tribal council that meets occasionally to advise the chief, or as complex as our establishment in Dominica with its silly forms, rules, and bureaucracies. Such complex government is mostly referred to as “the state,” an abstract concept referring to the source of all public authority. That is my definition of government!

Very beautiful you are indeed Lesslasa; and believe it or not I rooted for you, and hope that you would be successful, and accomplished all of your goals within all of the pageants you contested. However, I cannot support your idea that Dominica, or any government, for that matter should set aside a budget in order to sponsor programs such as beauty queen contest; I detest the sponsorship of sending people to the Olympics games, or any other sporting events for that matter.

You see there are organization such as the JC’s, that is the Junior Chamber of Commerce which sponsors such event, at least that’s how I remember it on the island of Antigua, along with private enterprise who are able to sponsor participants do spending their own money. I remember when my cousin Kathleen Telemaque, won the crown in Dominica, and later capture the Miss Caribbean title in Antigua, in the 1970’s when she and all the other contestant from across the Caribbean traveled to Antigua, they were hosted at the expense of the Antigua JC’s, nothing remains the same, but government of Antigua, or from any other Caribbean had nothing to do with the events, and wherever Kathleen traveled, for appearances, it was at the expense of the JC’s.

The minute you ask a government such as those in the Caribbean, and especially Dominica government, to get involve the whole event would become a political foot ball, and perhaps even you which I believed is endowed with some unique talents may be overlooked, Passover for a less talented political party clone.

Such events are not the business of government, it is entertainment, therefore the people who are interesting in such events should contribute by going to the events, pay for the entertainment at some level, and the organizers rather than filling their pockets with the money they receive at the gate some of it should go into a fond to accommodate the founding, and sponsoring of those who cannot afford the sponsoring of themselves.

Some people will disagree with my opinion, nevertheless, to allow the government to take control over carnival, and entertainment for that matter, is like having a Dominica politician having a key to ones house, which gives them the right to open ones house in the dead of night, and enter in order to supervise how the home owner sleeps.

That would be too much power over the event.

our level of ignorance in dominica is amazing….
the girl is right….she is MISS DOMINICA….
    she representing DOMINICA…
why should she represent DOMINICA from her own pocket ?
we should inform ourselves before we speak….

FIND OUT WHAT MISS AMERICA gets for example…..
Govt has money they have 96,000 to pay Jong….

and its time we stop selling our selves short…
the TRINI SOCA MONARCH received 2 Million TT or 1 million EC….
wat does our Calypso Monarch get ? a crown of thorns ?…..

its time we start to appreciate art, culture and our music….

    • Francisco Telemaque
      March 27, 2014

You know what Miss America, gets?

Exactly what Donald Trump who owns the Miss America pageant gives to her, in prices; the Federal Government, nor the city of New York, of wherever the pageant is held contributes nothing to Miss America.

You, should shut your damn mouth, before you talk crap about what you do not know instead of suggesting to people not to talk about what they do not know!

The problem with us Dominicans, is that we depend on government too bloody much, that is why the hungry, and vindictive, thieves, the politicians kick and fling most of you around like foot bal!

Why the heck should any government be getting involved in carnival activities. Carnival been in Dominica for more than two hundred years, as a matter of fact from the time slavery was abolished, that is where it originates, Dominica was a colony of Britain, for more than two hundred years, they never sponsor Carnival in Dominica, nor any other island of the Caribbean,

And mind whosoever it may concern, when people spoke about Carnival the only place they were referring to in the Caribbean, was Trinidad, St. Lucia, Dominica, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Brazil, and Louisiana in the United States.

Antigua, commenced organizing Carnival sometime after 1957, after the late Oscar Mason went to visit Dominica, and attend Carnival, when he returned to Antigua he introduced the idea of Carnival to the late Prime Minister V. C.Bird Sr., who was the Chief Minister at the time. Bird told him to go and talk to Shoul, who was a merchant, and Car dealer, hence a Carnival committee was formed, and the rest is history as far as Antigua Carnival goes.; they decided to celebrate it two days in August, so as not to conflict with Trinidad, and Dominica Carnival which is traditionally held in the month of February.

All the rest came after,Crop over in Barbados, and whatever is found on any of the islands I have not mentioned came later, they are young!

Some of you need to shut up; kiss the Butt, of the politicians for help if you must; however, I believe you all would be better off trying to accomplish your goals by helping yourselves!

seriously, what does Dominica receive from having such representation? What? Does GDP skyrocket? Does it tackle unemployment, does it bring new technologies? Answer is no no no and no…
Miss Dominica is just entertainment and its utterly unjust and dishonest to finance girls fun through state budget. Dominica is indebted country with negative trade balance, receiving constant donation and grants into its budget. Country with education on bad level, country with very unsettle society, country without clear perspective or at least clear plan how to develop and in such situation you think you can finance Miss Dominica? I am gobsmacked….

Reading the majority of these comments I have to come to the conclusion that the people commenting have no knowledge of the topic or issue at hand. Let’s save the negativity and find a different forum to express the anger. These comments are read globally. What image are we portraying as PATRIOTIC DOMINICANS? Countries around the world have provisions in place to properly prepare their representatives, in many different ventures, not simply pageantry. When a young lady travels out of the country with the title and sash ‘Ms. Dominica’, she is representing DOMINICA and it is borderline foolish to state that the government should not support her better. The government and people of Dominica should show 100% support for this individual. If she shines regionally and internationally, DOMINICA shines. If she comes out on top, DOMINICA comes out on top. The publicity and exposure that our country would gain from having a representative who is properly prepared is vast. The very opposite can be expected when Ms. Dominica enters a regional or international competition looking like a hot mess. I can only imagine the negative comments which would be directed at the contestant and the country she represents, DOMINICA. From those comments would come total disinterest in visiting a country that cannot send a suitably prepared lady to represent. Granted, the country may not have an excess of funds to rival that of larger and more financially stable nations, however, there has to be some sort of budget put in place for this specific purpose. There are so many talented people in the country who could also use their support of Ms. Dominica to showcase their talents and most definitely increase their clientele in Dominica and possibly expose themselves to a regional and international market. It should be a team effort spearheaded by the government of Dominica. The government itself may not have the funds, but they should be resourceful enough to adequately set it in motion.

My God it seems that everybody playing politics. After the government spend so much money on her and more than any other Queen in the History of pageants hear what she is now saying. She came from an economically stable background and is clearly part of one of the richest families in Dominica and there have been so many queens who came from very challenged families and they didn’t get so much support and that is what she is now vomiting out. The Bible speaks about persons who fall into the category of the ungreatfool.
Tell me which Government in the Caribbean that have given the winner of the queen pageant a full scholarship to study any course/degree at any institution accredited education of her choice ? Such was put in place by this government and this is in the tune of over EC $ 250. 000.
Miss Armour this is so unfortunate indeed.

There is solid truth in what you said. The problem is Dominicans are very biased to certain queens. All those bougouis and poor malaway alike that was depositing funds in bank accounts for you when they are no benefit in doing so still not enough for you? Leslassa has won the same miss dominica title like all those before her and she was highly favoured and featured everywhere. Far more than any other. How fair is that. We went so far as wasting tens of thousands of dollars sending her to Miss World. And for what? nothing. If you ask me, too much money is wasted on pagaents that bring no benefit to our youth as it is. Let the politicians deal with politics. You are getting too big for your boots.

ok, you have made a brave statement, one which needed to be said. But the problem is where private sector is absent govt must step forward. The private sector can hardly meet expenses on a day to day basis. What you have in the USA is a thriving private sector. They utilise the talented contestants and queens to promote their products. They heavily support these contestants. What Dominica have are industries that can hardly get off their feet. They can hardly contribute to market their products. So the responsibility falls on the govt to step up.

I agree that government must be more supportive and proactive. People should not have to jump hoops to use all personal contacst and resources to participate in regional or international contest repersenting the country, be it sports, entertainment, Miss Dominica or whatever. Too often these things are afterthoughts. My question is are the relevant authorities even submiting such budgets to the government? Furthermore, it is an important motivating factor (not to mention instilling more national pride) that a contestant, artist, sportsman etc can aspire to the very highest echelons with certain expectations. This should not be done on a case by case basis or on the basis of who makes the most noise or have relatives or friends of influence, etc.. All mis Dominica contestants should be almost guaranteed that if successful, they can look forward to participation in x number of regional and international contests. Just as a successful student from any segment of society can aspire to an island scholarship to any country of their choice, so should representatives of the country have something solid to look towards. And we are not even talking about prizes yet. Government must appreciate that national buildingh has many facets. Its not only the physical infrastructure, the educational and health inputs. We have to set money aside for these things as it builds a nation internally and allows us to build prestige on the world scene. These have immense value as it could also lead to invaluable publicity….and who knows where this will take us..having said all that, we also need to note that government cannot do it all. There has to be interest and a stake for the private sector too. Seriously though, we have to step up our game. These things are around long enough that we are not scrambling every year to raise funds, to give the necessary support or to catch a government’s attention. We have to grow as a nation and have healthy discussions about what we can do better. It starts with a thought and a plan. i would like to see Community Development, culture and tourism meet on a more strategic method of raising public profile, national pride and guaranteed support for these endeavors. There needs to be a much stronger voice..not just lip service by a few individuals! I applaud Lesslasa for making such an appeal. We need to be more strategic. The old ways of doing business as usual will not take us far enough!

Ms. Armour..great job on your reign..but this is not the job of the government. The government is to help make sure the basic needs of its citizens are met and can be met. ALso to provide security to citizens. This is where the private sector needs to play their part and also the proceeds of the show which are always mishandled in dca. There are still some school in dca that do not have a library; This is the job of the govt. I also believe that this government has given more than enough during your reign.

Great suggestion Miss Shillingford. I am sure your next Parl. Rep, Mr. Joshua Francis of the UWP, will give full support to your suggestion.

I do believe more should be invested because at the end all the pass queens has done exceptionally well so with more support they could go even further….. Their should be a paid makeup and hair person and also and official wobrobe sponsor for events after the show … And free membership to a gym for the year

Bravo dodo’y, I applaud you for this speech however, I can assure you it has fallen on deaf ears…they feel more comfortable if you come directly to the red clinic or parlrep so ministers can make crude requests to you and ask to touch your left breast.

You and Ms Baron will be spared because you all have stallwat families but to the little Black country girl who wins that title is pure humiliation according to singing Sandra.

    I’ve said my piece.

    Grace Mercy and Peace!

Are you serious, pageantry is a private thing where if the winning contestant has good management the world is hers.

which government in the world gives budget for beauty queens next you’ll will want a whole ministry, how absurd.

    • really?

Miss Baron does not come from money, my friend. In fact, she is far from it. She comes from a single parent and was raised with cousins and aunts as one big family. Francine’s story is similar to hundred’s of other Dominican girls’ stories… hard work and prayer. And by the way, why wasn’t Francine chosen to give this speech instead of Miss Dominica 2013? She speaks just as eloquently and knows about women’s issues just as well, and she is this year’s title winner. It would have been a great opportunity to hear her give her views.
