Assembly of patriots for International Day of Democracy

Roseau, September 14, 2011 – The Citizen’s Forum for Good Governance is pleased to announce a special assembly of patriots to mark International Day of Democracy on September 15th, 2011 at Harlem Plaza from 6:30 pm.

In this important celebration of human freedom, the Citizen’s Forum joins with the United Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union and patriots around the world in recognition of the urgent need to deepen and strengthen our commitment to promote and protect democracy.

Thursday’s assembly will take stock of democracy movements around the world that are toppling dictatorships and restoring civility to oppressed people.

The highlight will be an open mike session on the theme of this year’s United Nations event which asks the question: “What do citizens expect from their Parliament?”

On 15 September, the IPU and parliaments around the world celebrate the International Day of Democracy, declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007. In its resolution A/RES/62/7 establishing the International Day of Democracy, the United Nations noted that “while democracies share common features, there is no single model of democracy” and that “democracy does not belong to any country or region”. The International Day of Democracy is meant both to celebrate democracy and to serve as a reminder that the need to promote and protect democracy is as urgent now as ever.

The choice of 15 September for the International Day of Democracy corresponds to the adoption in September 1997 by the IPU of a Universal Declaration on Democracy. That Declaration affirms the principles of democracy, the elements and exercise of democratic government, and the global scope of democracy.

Since the first International Day of Democracy was celebrated on 15 September 2008, the IPU and parliaments around the world have organized numerous special events, reaffirming parliament as the central institution of democracy.

The International Day of Democracy is therefore an annual opportunity to:
– Emphasize the importance of democracy, what it involves, the challenges it faces as well as the opportunities it offers, and the central responsibility that all parliaments have as the key institution of democracy
– Examine and discuss how well parliament performs its democratic functions, possibly on the basis of a self-assessment, and identify what steps it may take to strengthen its effectiveness
– Promote dialogue with citizens, especially young people, and encourage their participation in political processes.

In this regard, patriots from all over DOMINICA are invited to join the Citizen’s Forum for Good Governance as the nation marks International Day of democracy – this Thursday night at Harlem Plaza in Newtown from 6:30 pm.

Simple mind, if the focus is not Skerrit, then why single him out on all occassions instead of pointing out what needs to be done on the Island.

The opposition should be there as the body to provide another option to the people. Provide some hope if in their view the leading party is not providing leadership. Not continously looking at every single quote, sentence and speech to get something to spin. What they should do is look at all those things and present a plan so who might be looking for change might even consider them the next time around

Will there ever be unity in this country called Dominica again. Seriously people I grieve for my country, what have these people done to my country… I spent 37years in Dominica, I get active in politics from the age of 18, I supported Patrick John’s labor party and when he messed up I supported the DLMA… The Dominica Liberation Movement Alliance, after they killed the movement with Maurice Bishop, I supported the UWP, I left Dominica less than a year after UWP got it power, and there was never this level of division and polarization in the land.. After leaving Dominica Labor party won again, I respected Rosie Douglas; I am part of a foundation in his name. He died suddenly and Perro came in I was comfortable with Perro to the point where I would go to functions that he had in Washington DC still as a proud Dominican, but from 2005 my country of birth Dominica has become Satan’s playground! What happened< why? People please ask yourself some questions for the sake of your country and stop that nonsense about people hate Skerrit, this not the problem and you guys know it!! Stop it! Those who cannot live together like brothers and sisters will perish together like FOOLS! Which is more important? Dominica or that Skerrit Regime?? History will not be kind to you this generation of Dominicans. You dropped the ball, big time!

Listening the all the media house in the reporting of the news and I must say that one particular media house in my view is inciting a violent uprising in Dominica.

We have a democratic process where all go to poles to elect a leader why should those so call leaders of democaracy continuously try to instill fear and divide among our people. Is this the only way of fear mongering that they can get support for their biase view.

With all the intellect that they posses they lark to ability to come up with a peaceful formular which will work.

There is a heighten level of desperation in the voices of those who claim to want the best for Dominica that I am very concern about the security and safety of the Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit and his Cabinet.

I hope that the Prime Minister’s security is increased that no harm will come to him and sadness to your people.

I have to say that I respect some members of the Dominica Freedom Party who continues to demonstrate a level of calm in this situation.

They are asking for PEACE among our young people and adults yet the words coming from their mouth is violent, fear mongering and uprising.

Democaracy, interigity and accountability also applies to you the ones asking for it. Democaracy is alive and freely expressed on the island. Interigity should always be demonstrated when in an unbiase delivery of information, news and conduct. Accountability for the violence you’re inciting on the island you must take responsibility for when you with you’re spreading malice and hate.

When the cry of the mothers who willloose their loved ones because of the violence coming from so call leaders, what will you tell them. Or is your hatred for one man so intense that you’re blinded by what you’re inciting. Or do you feel happy if you get a few to support your lark of Democaracy, Interigity and Accountablity to the Beople of Dominica

Duh Worry about Skerrit. Are you really? HUUUUUUUUUUH he safe. The secret police have him covered, worry about your children’s future and the kind of Dominica they will inherit. You see Sir or Mam, when leaders like like that know that what they are doing is wrong, they become very paranoid, and their first order to have put themselves under Maximun secuirty 24 hours a day. I wouldn’t be surprised if there isn’t a network of tunnels under Roseau leading to a jetty somewhere. Don’t worry mam or Sir, you have uch more serious things to worry about! You got it?

Nohogwash, how can you give a true analysis of the situation on the ground when you only listen to certains via the internet.

Are your supporting person who are asking Dominicans to put boots on the ground and rise up against their own people while you safe in which ever country you`re presently living.

We Dominicans who live on island no better than to take direction from person whose safety will not be affected in the least because of the distance of those inciting violence.

We cannot and must not allow ourselves to be influence by person who cannot put together their plan to move Dominica forward but only spread negativity. No one regardless of which political party in power cannot effectively govern by spreading fear among her people.

If you want Skerrit out, give us an option worth looking at. Stop preaching hate among our people.

I listen to some and I hear morning, noon and night is hate, violence and unrest from those telling us the Skerrit is not a good leader. Are they saying that we should follow them with all hatred they are preaching, the lark of plans they have to move Dominica forward, what plans to they have to curb crime.

They are so focused on Skerritt that they loose opportunties where directions from them would give all Dominicans an option. Oh no they are so narrow focus that they cannot see beyond their mission of spreading hate. Its not working find a new method to reach the people.

Are you saying that Dominicans who live overseas are not patriotic? Why then did the government (whom I guess you support) transport plane loads of these very people whom you refer to as non patriotic, to help them in the last election? Plane loads that ensured they remained in power to continue growing their largess while Dominica keeps plunging further into the abyss. If you call them non patriotic for the latter then maybe they are but if you call them non patriotic for realizing their wrongs and speaking out, at least they have the courage to stand up and defend the country of their birth although they live abroad but folks like you who live in Dominica wear your political blinkers while Dominica is in crisis and so you are the one who is NOT PATRIOTIC.

I am purplexed by the use of the word “PATRIOTS”. I thought patriots were people who loved and worked hard for their country, inside their country, and participate in and support developmental projects, assisting less fortunate fellow citizens etc.

But of the people that I see calling themselves “Patriots”, many do not actually live in Dominica at all, and those that do are just sitting around criticising anyone who is not jumping on their crazy bandwagon.

I think that you all Yankee Dominicans, with the same dual citizenship that you criticize, just sit in your homesick appartments in North America and hijacked the word from the U.S. War of Independence without knowing what it means. All you all do is sit on your internet and criticize your country. Now your friends in DA are adopting it and misusing the word as well.

Call yourselves what you want… the real patriots are physically working for their country on the ground.

Haha, very funny! CFGG, good move, all the Dominicans who are on this forum should be at this session, and please Parry and Brain, do yourselves a favor and be there to. It is painful to listen to you guys and to admit, yes there are Dominicans so called educated and educators, and I feel so, so sorry for the next generation. CFGG, continue to try to educate the people, your task is daunting, because the Gestapo is busy putting barriers like land mines all over so that the people, do not get the education that will make a difference in Dominica. Oh it is painful!! I wish you all the best with this undertaking, it is important and timely.
