Astaphan criticizes Dice’s latest Calypso; he’s just running his mouth Pat Aaron says

Senior Counsel Tony Astaphan has heavily criticized one of the songs of seven times King, Dennison ‘Dice’ Joseph has released for the 2016 Calypso season.

The song entitled; “My Dominica Trade House.com” was penned by Songwriter Pat Aaron and was released last week and since then has become a popular one on the airwaves.

“You have Pat Aaron writing another foolish song for Dice,” Astaphan lamented on Talking Point on state-owned DBS Radio on Tuesday.

According to Astaphan Dice is being shackled, imprisoned and held “in bondage by his managers and his songwriters.”

“Dice is a phenomenal talent who should be on BET (Black Entertainment Television) and who should be at the highest level of world music and not just singing the same political nonsense from Pat Aaron,” he stated.

But Aaron has shot back at Astaphan.

“Instead of just running his mouth, why don’t he step up and take Dice to the next level,” he stated. “I have taken him where I can take him so why don’t he take over from there?”

Aaron, who spoke to Dominica News Online (DNO), said Astaphan should take up from where he (Aaron) has started and take Dice to the next level.

Aaron told DNO that it seems Tony knows, “what Dice has and what Dice needs and I don’t need.”

“I mean all he does is talk,” Aaron remarked.

He added, “He (Astaphan) is the only smart person in Dominica, we know that… why is he making such a big thing from something that is foolish?”

I see calypsonians as activists who who take a stand against the corruption that goes on in the country but instead they do it in art form by signing about the state of affairs in the country. I listened to the song and personally I see nothing wrong with it except that it is exposing the wrong done by the present administration.
Mr. Aaron, keep on writing, so our calypsonians can keep on signing. You are a great writer.

Anthony Astaphan, the Labourites’ favorite “mouthpiece”. It is baffling how Tony Astaphan feels that he must add his voice to everything in Dominica. Mr. Astaphan, your fans are dwindling, the songs you’re singing are stale, your voice is gravelly to the point of being annoying. Your opinion that Dice’s latest song is foolish is a “fart in the wind”….it stays around and stinks for a few seconds then it’s gone…poof…out of our minds. Here is an idea Tony…why don’t you, with your brilliant mind, pen a few lyrics of your own and publish them giving consent for any Calypso singer to use them. I can help you along here…”Sue sue sue I ready to sue somebody…wen de Syrian come…everyting better run…I ready to sue somebody. Since I get de Siserou…for all ah de good work that I do…I ready to sue sue sue….I ready to sue somebody. My client might be a crook…but he still ahright in my book…so if they talking bout he…asking bout passport money…I ready to…

Tony Astaphan is absolutely right. Dice is a phenomenal talent who is being stifled from spreading his wings and broadening his horizons. Artists like Kevin Little, Rupee, Machel Montano have all taken their soca/calypso talents beyond their countries’ shores and made have become huge stars making loads of money. Meanwhile Pat Aaron has continued to uses solely as his trained parrot whom he has taught to curse and insult Roosevelt Skerrit and Labour Party supporters like Tony Astaphans. Pat Aaron you have challenged Tony Astaphans to take Dice. Well Pat if you are genuine about wanting to see Dice rise to the next level release from your stranglehold. Release from the pressing contract that you now have him signed to. The young man is being suppressed by your hate and your greed. Unchained his melody and set Dice free and watch him soar. I have no doubt Tony will take him to the next level.

May I suggest that Pat sends a complimentary copy of his/Dice’s song “My Dominica Trade House” to:
    Mr. Alireza Monfared,
Chairman “My Dominica Trade House SDN BHD,
    no. 8-7, Binjai 8, Level 8,
    Lorong Binjai, Kuala Lumpur,
    Selangor 50450
    Malaysia.

So he can acquaint himself with the popular calypso art form of his adopted country and get familiarized with our sentiments, in order to understand us better. He may as well get used to it.

Tony’s concern is not about pat and dice making good bedfellows.husband and wife loves partners call it what you want. It’s about dice being a great artist and can’t move beyond the boundaries of Dominica because he is being cajoled by a song writer who can’t make him go international. That is tony!s concern right there…

I live in Houston and listen to all of them, there is no more Spice to Dice, concentrating to mush on politics calypso should be fun.

Calypso is a divisive measure used by slaves against their masters to speak about them without they knowing. Now we use the same tool against ourselves under the cloak of “social commentary”. In truth it is gossip to music. When we ready we are a christian nation when we ready we are not. Keep in mind what the Bible says gossip and gossipers. when will black people come together?

Pat ….. Typical Dominican response, “well why dont you take him to the next level”. Tony looking like a songwriter or a producer or artist manager or show promoter to you? Tony, like everybody else, sees the promise in Dice and would like to see him progress from just local calypso which isnt going anywhere else outside of Dominica and its Diaspora. So because he stated his opinion, he must take the responsibility? no that’s not in his line of work or expertise. Tony would be foolish to do so. The issue is that the subject matter given by Pat seems to be primarily about Tony’s client/s. Hence his concern for the young man’s performances and future (warranted or not).

there are 12 months in the year Dicy did collaborations with CK, Fitzroy Williams and Gordon Henderson from Exile one , he has done gigs with many others with different genres of music. But calypso is calypso and when that time comes around you expect the Dice to do what he does best. But tell Tony go tell Chakie in Trinidad that nonsense and see if Chalkie would not make an entire album about he Tony and his gang. He should GO tell that to Crocro and see if Crocro WOULD NOT TEAR him APART IN SONG. When Sparrow comes in next week tell Sparrow his songs are nonsense and right there and then you get an answer in song. Tony just relax and listen the season will be soon over, then you and your gang can go do other things to give Dicy and others real juicy topics to sing on.

Nothing is wrong with pat writing songs for dice cause other calypso singers sing songs written for them by other people even though the song is political or not.Is everyone a tailor and can make their own clothes?I am not saying that calypso singers cannot write their own songs some do but a song writer writing a song for someone to sing is the same principal as a tailor making clothes for someone to use.Pat and Dice is a strong force together and their songs truth don’t only hurt these crooked baby dolls like tony it melts their plastic face with the heat it brings.

BET? Never degrade yourself to want to get on the network that degrades black people.
That is what Astaphan wants for us black people, degrade us at all costs. If I could abolish BET from all the caribbean television stations I would. BET is a slap in the face of Martin Luther King.
When Martin Luther King’s wife died, not even a whisper of it on BET. Astaphan have respect for the local arts, Dominicans and BLACK PEOPLE

    • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
      January 13, 2016

Where do you get the idea that BET degrades black people?

That’s a lie; for your information “BET” simply means Black Entertainment Television. The originator of the Channel is a Black man! The guy made so much money from BET, he did not want to bother with it anyone, so he sold it to some white guy, or a white company.

My American mate (me woman) is black, she watches BET daily, She has a television in different rooms which seems to be permanent on BET, if possible all day, so am I to assume she like to watch black people get put down by the people who runs BET?

Speak the truth at all times thus you will be more effective!

Calypso came from the plantations when the Ancestors sang about their oppressors. It was called “Call and Response”. It has evolved where they sing social commentaries on the issues. The government in power is always at the receiving end. That is the norm all over the Caribbean.
How can Tony Astaphans tell a people with a history and culture what to sing? I find Tony out of place wanting to define our culture. Boss, you want to defend wrong doing, just stick to your lane.

This is very interesting. It is not only on plantations people would have made up their protest songs. Carnaval is a very old custom. In Spain, especially the port city of Cadiz they celebrate carnaval at the same time we do and in a similar fashion. There too, songs are made up especially for the occasion full of satire, irreverence and inuendo. The Spanish dictator Franco tried to stop it during his rule but to no avail. It simply went underground for a while.

Mr. Astaphan is missing the point. Our calypsos are first and foremost focused on local issues. A way of making our discontent known on either side of the divide, social, political and even religious. It is a safety valve for the discharge of our emotions full of puns, ridicule and challenges to authority and pretence. A bit of scandal is always cherished to provide spice. They are never written with an international market in mind and if they find popularity there it is a bonus. If they were written with commercial gain in mind only they would be like cold soup eaten with a piece of stale bread.
I understand that mr. Astaphan would like to suppress the message because it may upset some and if he had a legal base to ban it I’m sure he would do so. But it also amuses others. I’d say let it be because the more the likes of mr. Astaphan rant about it the more publicity they give to the message, while they themselves are seen as spoilsports. Let Dice sing. Happy Carnaval!

I wonder how and when this Dice will ever get on BET?

We as Dominicans talk a lot of things we dream, or wish for! Calypso is not an American thing, so how is it going to get on BET when calypso is not recognized in America?

Even in the days of Harry Bellafonte when he had regular calypso shows in casinos in Las Vegas, and had people like the late Frankie Francis, that great saxophonist and guys like Paul Oxley, who back the greats like Slinger Francisco (Sparrow) in his career, calypsos did not capture a calypso audience here; is Dominica Dice that will make it on BET!

Reggae is big, but do they feature Jamaican music on BET. If they do I have never see it when the black guy owned the programs and Station, nor since the white guy owns BET.

Before Louis Arrack became a Muslim minister; he was all in Canada singing Calypso, it never caught on, and even if Sparrow has sang internationally, and in different languages even in German, Calypso simply is not an international…

Before Louis Arrack became a Muslim minister; Born to Jamaican parents; he was all in Canada singing Calypso, it never caught on, and even if Sparrow has sang internationally, and in different languages even in German, Calypso simply did not hook any international audience, is not an international thing. North Americans do not buy Calypso music!

I am not trying to be negative about that but it is simply reality, man it is not going to happen that is simply wishful thinking, Now Dice might get a gig or two to perform to a West Indian audience, if he is sponsored, and brought here by a West Indian promoter.

I doubt however, a white entertainment promoter, or record company will bring a calypso singer from the Caribbean, or Dominica for that matter to put on a show unless they would be catering to a total West Indian crowd!

You are so very correct because calypso is so earthy and native to the people, that the foreign person would have a hard time connecting. They may dance to the rhythm and beat but the lyrics would be lost. And rightly so, remember the slaves sang calypso to express their pain, in such a way massa did not understand! One has to be part of the landscape, culture, fabric to “get” calypso. HMMMMM Don’t expect “senior counsel devil” to get it. He really isn’t part of US! You are spot on sir.

Francisco forget about internationally, where’s the Mecca for calypso is not Trinidad? How much of dice songs you hear playing there? Have you ever heard of dice going there to perform? Even Ray Charles could see what am saying.

“Before Louis Arrack became a Muslim minister;”

Actually. Francisco meant to write Louis Farrakan: And note too, my brother in New Jersey, have a band, named Royalty Band, I do not know if he is still associated with the band, nevertheless, as far as I know their audience in New Jersey are people from Wesley, Marigot; and most other Dominicans. They play calypso, and a whole bunch of patios songs.

I do not believe they have an American listening audience either.

    • January 13, 2016

What nonsense are you writing? It does not have to be calypso: he can sing in any genre he chooses, because he is that talented. Stop criticizing calypso. If you knew your facts you would know that it is because of Harry Belafonte we have bench marks called “Gold or Platinum” record albums; i.e. when you sell in excess of one million albums in one week. Guess who was the first entertainer to do so? Harry Belafonte! “Tally me banana” was the smash hit from that album. Man, stay in your lane.

      • January 13, 2016

Here a fact check for you… free of charge. It’s not ” Louis Arrack “, it’s Louis Farrakhan or his original name ” Louis Eugene Walcott”. Try using Google as your writing companion if you don’t want to do academic research referencing.

      • Francisco Etienne-Dods Telemaque
        January 13, 2016

Well by now I am quite sure you may have noticed I recognized erred, and made the correction. There is nothing to fact check any body familiar with Calypso singers born in America of Jamaican parents would have known I was referencing Louis Farrakan!

Tony has a point and it’s rare that I agree with anything that comes out from his mouth. The trick is to find lyrics and melody to accompany the songs that will take them beyond Dominica’s shores. Trinidadians sing about politics all the time, but the deliverly is so clever. “All we have is just sea water and sand,” by Chalkdust comes to mind.

Tony, this song has really hit one of you nerves boy. By the way what you falsely accused Pat Aaron of doing to Dice, is the reality of what a legal advisor has done to Skerrit. That advisor destroyed Skerrit and ran to the US. I guess if this advisor could help get Skerrit back on track, Dice would not have to write such song. But the fact is, Skerrit is too far gone and only FBI can stop him

Who is more shackled, imprisoned, in bondage and suffering politically then Skeritt. I did not say it was the puppet master, it was Dice who said so in calypso.

But is true you killed dice with all them political songs. Did you ever hear Dice songs on other Caribbean stations? If is not Dominicans that send for these so called Dominican soca/calypso artist the would not eat a five cent bread. Dice is seven time monarch and could not make in the first round of eliminations in Trinidad. Once carnival done Dice done, not even in DA you hear those songs once March comes around. So yes Tony is right. It can be proven by the money he made over the years. Am guessing ain’t much cause you had to bail him the other day, he has no choice but to sing your songs.

      • January 14, 2016

Dear LabourofLove 2.1…I am extremely flattered that I am actually beginning to get loyal fans such as yourself! I really do understand that it is simply admiration for my writings why you choose to adopt my name. I am indeed proud and grateful to you for bringing recognition to the name LabourofLove. It is my firm belief that there are many more LabourofLoves out there dying to let their voices be heard, sick and tired of being maligned, marginalized and set aside while “big wigs” sit up in high offices getting fat from the Nation’s purse. I encourage you and many others to speak out against the injustices that has our entire Country in bondage. Speak with a loud voice knowing that the power in people is always greater than the people in power. Speak truth to power and let your voices chant down the walls of this fake Jericho. Indeed it is a Labour of Love, love for Country, love for self. and love for your people (ALL DOMINICANS)! You honor me…thank you.

When will Dice wake up and be a class performer rather than Aaron’s political machine?

Pat, how can DICE move to the next level when you have shackled and imprisoned him for your personal gain? You have brain washed this guy. He is your puppet. None of the songs you have written for him can’t hit the region market far less for the International market. When carnival is over THIS IS IT for his song. Seven times Calypso king in Dominica and he is still in your BACK YARD begging for corn. Only Dominicans know of Dice. Why can’t you bring him to the US where you reside for better opportunities? Pat you are a Leach and an Exploiter. Stop exploiting the man. STOP USING the man for political purposes.

The greatest of Caribbean calypsonians struggle to make it internationally, you want to tell me an ill-discipline young man like Dice will? I love Dice and his music but he does not have the discipline to succeed internationally. Dice is free to go anywhere or have anyone write for him. Dice choose to stay with Pat!
