UPDATE: Baby Drigo passes on

Baby Drigo

Dominica News Online has received the sad news of the death of Baby Drigo.

The one-month-old baby passed away last evening.

Yesterday DNO published a story highlighting the plight of the baby who was suffering from atrioventricular septal defect. Doctors had determined surgery was needed as soon as possible.

Parents, relatives and well-wishers of the baby were in the process of raising funds to meet the costs of the surgery.

The procedure was expected to cost US$30,000.

But it is now too late and organizers of the fund raiser are now in a state of sorrow and mourning.

They said funds raised so far will go towards planning a burial for the infant.

dominica lets be real you do not know the facts of the story. baby drigo was well loved and taken care off .the nurses and doctores are not god he saw this baaby was suffering to much so he called him home to be an angel.his mother was positive stayed to the end never leaving his side .the doctorrs and nurses worked tirelesssly .i wish his mother well brave and loving child i wish all the people who made these negative statements could take it away. all the people who owing the hospital to pay there bills we have money to sewo but our health care bills are not paid if each of us take upon our selves to pay pur bills then our health system could afford to do certien surgeries right here.we have good docotrs here.god bless dr lambert

This is so sad. One way poor people cope with these types of emergencies in other countries, is to have a mercy clinic. People who have money donate when they can. This way there is an emergency fund available in times of need. Also nurses and Doctors donate their time. Could be one day a week or a month or whatever. All over the world people struggle for health care. I am sure the Catholic church could donate a property to be used for this purpose. And are their no Nunns in Dominica? I met one or two, ask for more Don’t put all blame on Government. This is our duty as Christians to help each other. Even if it’s just a coin you have they add up. Sorry for this family to have such a sad Christmas. Peace

Its really sad to see and read how we think in DA. I am a born Dominican living in the US. I am a health care providing working for what I consider a very good health care system. And babies & adults die every day from different complications. What we need to remember from the time our first parent messed up in the garden we will continue to die until Jesus returns for us. I am not here saying that doctors should fold their arms and do nothing, I am just saying that some people are going to die no matter health care systems do. We should just share our sympathies with the parents pray with and for them and STOP all these useless and dumb comments where the rest of the world is watching.

Ahh NA i agree, but some times grief is a funny old thing, it makes people say and do some odd things, i am sure people on here mean no nastiness by it.
I myself understand very well that no matter what treatment some people get in any country, Dominica or even here in England, some times some one is just to poorly, i am no longer in the spa business, but i am now a training student Paramedic, and before i got in to emergency care, i was like a lot of people that used to think the same, that everyone could be cured, speacially the young, but i have discovered first hand its not always like that, and when it comes to children i know that no matter where that child is, everyone pulls the stops out to do everything humanly possible.
again i can not imagine the grief of this little angels family, and i send all my love and pray for some comfort for them in this, the most sadest of times, god bless xxxxx

O my goodness, my heart is aching for the poor parents of this little angel, may she rest in peace, and may just knowing her for the short time they did, will give some comfort to her parents knowing she was one of gods special little angels that he sent down, just to remind them that there is a heaven.
my love and prayers are with you.xxxxxxxxxxxx

Hon. Prime Minister, Minister of Health, Health Administrators, can we please invest in DOMINCA CARE? Dominicas are all over trying to raise funds to go over for medical attention. Dominica too often have to travel to over for medical attention. My God, instead of all the travels of the Prime Minister and his ministers on Poor tax Payers like me, or wasting money on luxury State house in Roseau, why not IMPROVE ON OUR HEALTH CARE. W

SAD – Makes me sick to the stomach. Why did they wait so long to request assistance? But where is the gov’t in all this? SOMETHING COULD HAVE BEEN DONE BUT WASN’T. I am certain if the LAST NAME was more prestigious efforts to save that child whould have been more dynamic.

Typical Dominicans, when people ask for money donations for a good cause give them money, don’t pray for them and put other people’s fate at the mercy of your god, one which im sure doesn’t even exist and if he does then he’s a barbarian to let things like this happen.

And just to let you know my GOD is not a babarian cuz if he was you would not be there, and you still have time to accept HIM as you personal LORD and Saviour and he will forgive you and save you.

Listen up kinhearted people of Dominica. This child was not born yesterday and the doctors knew of his situation. If the surgery was so important, someone please tell me what is wrong with surgery first and raising funds afterwards. Sometimes I think that we take way to long to deal withthe important issues at hand.
We are not talking about a road to be repaired and in need of oversees funds to pay for it. We have to think of what is impotant and look at the seriousness of the sitaution and deal with it. I sent out an appeal to my family in the early hours of the morning to give up buying christmas cards and give me the monies for the cause only to read a few hours later that the child died.
    Let’s be more concious Dominicans.
    God bless the family

I agree. I was thinking about the same thing. More emphasis is placed on getting funds for the “band” than for the surgery. How sad!

      December 20, 2011

because the the people performing the surgery wants to see their money upfront. in the case of Martinique fellow-dominicans before her have dirtied the waters by turnng their backs on their bills. In the case of stuck-up ,full- of-themselves Bajans well……………….

Everyone is commenting and don’t know the facts. All you folks who are commenting did you know that a specialist came in to evaluate the baby? Do you know that a hospital has to agree to accept the baby/patient for care? Then arrangements can be made for transfers. Do you know on top of cost of surgery there is cost of airlifting the patient which can be just as much as the surgery. Do you know there is additional cost of after care and follow ups. People don’t pay their EC$30 a day PMH fee and you folks are going on and on about Government not helping poor people. Please go to the hospital administration and ask about all the patients and babies who have gone abroad for additional care. Why are you not talking about all the babies who have been saved. Babies are dying at St Judes and Great Ormond Street hospital and all the other top notch children’s hospitals and they have all the up to the minute technology and research available. As sad as it is, the fact is sometimes the baby is just too sick, has too many complications. Will not have any quality of life and will not have longevity. That baby was fighting, but the sweet little baby just could not make it. Please people, stop talking and criticizing about things you don’t have all the facts about. Please Please. Sympathy to the babies family and all the PMH staff who were caring for him.

You know people don’t realize how much they hurt health care workers when they go out on the air and make such uninformed statements. it really hurts because after all they do have hearts and they care for the patients and it does leave a scar when people make nasty comments when all they do is try to help with the limited resources that is available to the third world countries and mark you it is no better in the developing countries.

Where is your medical system, the poor child do need help. December 20, 2011

Yes the medical system in Dominica is low but you have to say thank God for what we have… Do you know you cant get to assistance in alot of hospital around the world if you do not have insurance or the money? Do you know that just to sit in the waiting room to get assistance from a nurse you need to pay. Do you know that you have to pay for Ambulance services in other places..? Do some research we cry to much here in D.A.

I’m sorry for the lost of the baby I wish better could be done and I pray our medical service here improves.

Something needs to be put in place to assist people in those situations. The child has been there for a month and was unable to get help needed to have the surgery. Too many people are losing their lives because of lack of proper health care and health insurance. People if you are able please make the sacrifice and get health insurance for yourself and family because if you don’t look out for your self,no one else will. Most of the times, it is too late to raise funds as was with this case so you must do it now.most of the times, you spend money uselessly, and when we realy need it, we don’t have it. Today, Medical insurance is not an option or a choice, IT IS A MUST! Heath care today is very expensive and not only that but more people, especially new borns and the younger age group, are developing really serious health conditions that can not be treated here and most if not all of the times, they do not have the money to seek the necessary attention out there. I have been through a situation like this and if i was not able to get my child out of Dominica within a few days, he would have been dead but thank be to God we were able to and today he is alive and well. We can not depend on government and on others, we have to do it for ourself. those of us who are able to please get medical insurance for our self and family. we should still hope and pray that we never have to use it, but just in case, we know we have somewhere we can turn to. Take THIS FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN THROUGH A SITUATION LIKE WHAT HAPPEN TO BABY DRIGO. BUT AS I SAID, THANK GOD I WAS ABLE TO GET MY CHILD OUT IN TIME

May God bless and strengthen the parents and family in this sad situation

We also need to break down those hugh terminology so that we the lay man can understand what they are talking about so meaningful contributions can be made. As a medical person in lay man terms I think:

Atrioventricular septal defect is a combination of several abnormalities in the heart present at birth (congenital abnormalities). This defect, which is sometimes called endocardial cushion defect or atrioventricular septal defect, occurs when there’s a hole between the chambers of the heart and problems with the valves that regulate blood flow in the heart. Atrioventricular canal defect allows extra blood to circulate to the lungs. Ensuing problems overwork the heart and cause it to enlarge. Atrioventricular canal defect is often associated with Down syndrome. If left untreated, atrioventricular canal defect may cause heart failure and high blood pressure in the lungs. To fix this defect, doctors often recommend surgery during the first year of life to close the hole and reconstruct the valves.

You’re the one needing a life because you don’t seem to be able to see pass the tip of your nose, and I will not put it too heavy on you because I do not want to disrupt the spirit of this request.

But just in case fool fool you were not aware, politics will decide how much you pay for a pound of sugar tomorrow and how many bread your dollar will buy and whether or not you receive paracetemol at the hospital.

It is not Scotia Bank or Astapahan, it will be your political directorate.

So pretend to be foolish, but as you bask in your ignorance, at least one more person is needing more care than can be provided at this extended health center we have in Goodwill we call a hospital.

Again, let me leave this alone for now…..

    • Hmmmm
      December 19, 2011

You are right, don’t bring in politics. Do you know how many babies have left Dominica for further care? Have you any idea how many people are transferred to other hospitals abroad for further care? Have you any idea the kind of work the peadiatric unit has been doing? Well pay a visit to the PMH or do some research and you will be very surprised at the level of care being given.
