Barbers get training in Child Protection

Some of those who attended the training workshop

About 11 barbers in Dominica were involved in a one-day training in the area of Child Protection and Domestic Violence.

The training took place on Monday at the Fort Young and was held in collaboration with the Bureau of Gender Affairs and Caribbean Male Action Network (CariMAN).

“We are keeping this why, because we know that you have a voice,” Coordinator of the Child Abuse Prevention Unit, Jemma Azille-Lewis told the barbers at the opening ceremony. “A lot of times we tend to overlook that sector. We keep workshops with everybody else on child protection and domestic violence, but we forget the barbers; we forget the hairdressers; we forget the ordinary persons in society; we forget the persons who are actually there that can also make a difference.”

According to her, it is not only the persons who work in government or the Doctors and teachers that can really make a difference.

“We always say that we ask for everybody to come on board to help us,” Azille-Lewis stated. “If we are asking for everybody that includes you, the barbershops…we know you have a voice, we know that you can reach persons.”

She noted that for the barbers to be able to have the discussion on protecting the country’s children, “you have to know what to say; you have to know the signs; you have to know what to look for.”

“If somebody abuses a child, if somebody abuses a woman, what are the consequences? In terms of imprisonment, what can they face? We want to let you know that so when you leave here today you are well informed,” she remarked.

Admin since you censored my first opinion and actual facts in regards to people in Child Protection services, I suspect this one will not see daylight.

No need to remind you that intelligent people from all over are reading you post on your site, and our nation is judged by what you put out there for the word to see; I think it is unwise to censor people comment especially if their response is more accurate than any garbage an author writes.

“Social workers who work with Child Protective Services must have a bachelor’s degree and their license or certification. In some cases a master’s degree in social work may be required. Being bilingual and demonstrating strong communication skills may also be assets for those pursuing a career in this field”

If anybody want the source I can provide it.

ADMIN: Your comment was not censored. If you post a number of comments in succession under one post, the system automatically thinks you are a spammer and trashes the comment.

Thanks for the info admin: However, since you are aware of the problem, perhaps you should take measures to correct the system, after all it is simply a computer, and perhaps doing some reprogramming to resolve that might be appropriate.

I am sure it is mind boggling to people who are professional social workers, working in the field of child protection must have jumped out of their skin reading this thing about training barbers of all persons in one day to become involve in child protection.

I have a friend and relative, a colleague who is a medical doctor in New York, his wife is in that field, she has all kinds of degrees relating to that!

And here this: when she gets a call at any hour in the dead of the night, it is mandatory, that she leaves her husband and children in bed, and go to look after the needs of abused. She is from Dominica okay!

“I am sorry you is not child protection”

    That should read:

I am sorry for you; that is not child protection!

I do not know what type of information the Barbers got; however, I am certain the information they received except in Dominica could prepare them involved in child protection, because child protection calls for more than only having a voice! One have to be trained in the filed of social services; and sometimes that requires a Ph. D.

    Finally:

Keep this in mind; Child protection is:

. Supply the child with necessary food, clothing, shelter, medical and mental health
    care, and appropriate supervision

.Protect the child from conditions, and actions which endanger the child life

. Take steps to ensure that the child gets a proper education according to law

. And by all means avoid exposing the child to cocaine, and marijuana, and
    alcohol during pregnancy.

Can a barber accomplishes all of that? You people are simply full of hogwash?

When you leave here today you are well informed about what?

    Continue:

Services for the family may include counseling, where it pertains to education, in places such as Europe, and North America, assisting in applying for financial benefits, helping families access services as early childhood, or special education, and helping the family meet basic needs such as housing, and food.

We need to note; every family is unique, hence the child protection investigators, or workers must assess what type of services the needs if any; and makes sound efforts to provide the identified services which will be most appropriate for the family, and assure the child/children safety.

How are the Barbers going to accomplish that: Child protection is not simply talking fart, seeing a child hungry, and saying; I am sorry you is not child protection; it goes deeper than that!

Keep this in mind; Child protection is:

. Supply the child with necessary food, clothing, shelter, medical and mental health
    care, and appropriate supervision

    .Protect the…

In their position, they serve many adult nationals including children. They could also help detect child and women abuse. They are also able to advise the men about abuse. I assume this is why this gathering of the one-day training was held. Everyone needs to be educated about this. We are each other’s keepers.
