Baron calls for responsible protection of the environment

Baron spoke at a panel discussion on Thursday evening

Foreign Affairs Minister Francine Baron has expressed the view that there is a need for increased efforts to protect and conserve the environment.

The statement was made at a panel discussion organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thursday night at the Fort Young Hotel under the theme
“Rethinking development options for building resilience for prosperity in small states.”

She noted that individuals must take personal responsibility when it comes to protecting their surroundings.

“We have to decide as a people, do we want to take action to protect the environment? Yes the government can put in policies, but we must take personal responsibility,” she said.

She proposed that the proper measures to environmental conservation can be taught at schools and practices can be implemented to follow.

“How do we educate our children about conserving the environment? In our schools we can assist the process of education of the children as to the practices they could follow to reduce the damages that is being caused to the environment,” she said.

According to her, the parents also play a vital role in the education of the children in schools.

“We as parents have to also do our part in the home to sensitize our children as to the proper practices that need to be followed,” Baron stated.

In addition to this, she affirmed that by 2020, the government will achieve a “100% us of generation of power from renewable resources,” and so the government has already invested millions of dollars into geothermal energy.

“This is a significant investment. What it will do is reduce significantly our carbon footprint, where we no longer need to rely on petroleum sources to produce our energy,” she remarked.

Madame Minister after the mad carnival of greed inflicted on our land the pollution of garbage which are the dead promises littering our roads, then Fire Brigade will have to give our roads a wash down.

After the wash down we will have to use Jeyes or Lysol to disinfect the country after we root out the diseased corpses of all the dead diplomats of the damned that you and SCARIT put on us to shame our people while engaged in unsavory financial gymnastics. You should be ashamed of yourself to come and talk of environment. You and your crew have pooped all over the place with the dysentery called corruption.

Not even Erika message you all could take that our island is suffering from those like you who betrayed us. Now history will wash all you out.

    Girl you too compawayzo….move dere!

The methods for absorbing and and re-using the energy from Geothermal is pretty inefficient though.

The risk greatly outweighs the end goal. Provoking a sleeping giant is not all in all a good idea.

There are other ways to gain energy from the planet, without disrupting the natural balance of nature. Of course the persons who work on it will be endangered.

Question: If geothermal energy was such a wonderful idea, why do the people spearheading it still live?

Reason for question: N. Tesla discovered more advanced and adaptable ways to use electricity to full efficiency and transmit it in ways unbelievable. He was done in because:

    – It was a great idea
    – would benefit the populace, as opposed to the greedy “upper class”
    – would render other vastly depended upon resources useless. Eg Oil

Im not saying to downplay geothermal energy; however, please get the efficiency right before saying its ready.

a Large scale mistake could be the last 1.

Baron calls for responsible protection of the environment………however, we believe that Francine Baron is out of touch to the reality of Dominica`s social and economic woes therefore the headline should read:

Madam Francine Please note what we expect of you and questionable colleagues:
We Dominicans calls for responsible protection of the political environment of Dominica, stained and corrupted by this inept Prime (Odd) Minister and the open and blatant Corrupt labour Government.
This corrupt Labour government and PM, have polluted our environment and stained the good name of Dominica.

Hello and good afternoon my people. Well Ms Baron the river I learn to swim in is being polluted by a pig farm in Laplaine. I am willing to take responsibility by demonstrating and to show you where the waste water from the pig farm is sipping into the soil and into the river. We can educate our children by showing them that’s not how anyone should manage a pig farm which is polluting our environment regardless of ones political affiliation.

In the 17 years I have lived on the edge of one of the last island based tropical rain forests on earth, I have witnessed plenty of environmental degradation. Deforestation, toxic coal pits, thoughtless spraying of chemicals, and animal poisoning are the norm. Last week my neighbor sprayed the banks along the ever dwindling river where I take my drinking water with Gramoxone. I called forestry, the police, and the environmental protection unit to no avail. Unless someone exercises authority, the situation will continue unabated. Ms. Baron is correct when she says education is the key as these perpetrators must be truly ignorant.

They did nothing? Are you surprised?

They exist to extract your tax contributions on a monthly/ fortnightly basis.

Power is no longer in the peoples hands. We do not follow the ways of nature but instead that of an idea from an artificial environment.

You all seem to think the bigger countries are “advanced”. To me, they are backwards.

A lack of forestry is death to the land. Poisoned waters is death to the land’s creatures.

If Dominica went back to agriculture as it should, then maybe we stand a better chance in educating the newer generation.

Even doing this, I will never suggest going back to the stone-ages but… where is the technology for helping out the ecosystems? So much is spent into destroying nature, where we destroy it faster than it can regenerate.

When you dont care about nature… why should it care about you?

  16. Francine, you need to find something constructive to do, people are not interested in trivialities! Yesterday you came up with the word reliance; today you come with some other crap. You are babbling talking out of your mind you are no scientist, as far as I am concerned you are a nobody! So, let me better educate to some facts you do not know, of all pertains to Dominica!

Some of the major causes of air pollution include burning of fossil fuels, agricultural activities, exhaust from industries, vehicle fumes, mining operations and indoor pollutants. Air pollution has a negative impact on the environment and life in general.

Air pollution may result in negative effects such as global warming, respiratory and heart complications, acid rain, destruction of the Ozone layer and destruction of natural habitats. Fossil fuels produce high levels of carbon.

Carbon is quite toxic and causes a negative effect to the environment. Burning agricultural products and spraying…

    • Continue Reading Francine:

Carbon is quite toxic and causes a negative effect to the environment. Burning agricultural products and spraying chemicals on crops are just a few of the things that cause air pollution. The toxicity of such chemicals may remain present in the air for a long period of time causing negative effects to wildlife and other vegetation.

In the process of manufacturing products, factories end up emitting high quantities of toxic fumes. These fumes may cause acid rain and destroy the Ozone layer. Detergents, air fresheners and painting supplies have toxic substances which are deposited into the air. As human beings extract minerals and other substances from the earth, the use of heavy machinery is common. This activity releases dust and other chemicals into the air causing massive pollution.

Mind you Francine, all of what I introduce you to are public information, but now you are educated to it, see what you can eliminate in Dominica that…

    • Finally:

Mind you Francine, all of what I introduce you to are public information, but now you are educated to it, see what you can eliminate in Dominica that will repair the environment; since there are no industries in Dominica polluting the environment except the passport industry, that would be easy to eliminate, along with the cleaning of the garbage and filth in the streets of Roseau along with the damage the pit-holes do. Problem resolved.

@ Toto. For the sake of argument, if that scenario had to take place, Dominica would needa a Prime minister who can say that he or she has credentials in the form of college degrees and the names of institutions where he or she was educated at. Dominica would not want to boast that she is the only country in the world whose leader does not have a college degree or some type of post secondary education.

Tja man, you are pathetic. You want Skerrit to embarrass us with that phony doctorate from the Punjab for which he made a donation U.S.30,000?? I put that eloquent Lennox Linton any time against that incoherent, stuttering Roosevelt Skerrit. It is the quality of the man that counts, not the number of degrees and our constitution recognises that. You can become a M.P. in our country without any formal formal education, as long as you can understand and debate in regular English. Such a person can even become prime minister if the people chose him. You think the legal minds who drew up our constitution were dummies? No, they were caring democrats. Go and read the constitution!

Try first speaking with the Environmental Health Unit in collaboration with the Solid Waste Department. why is it that we have no recycling equipment yet? i heard the french were willing to work with us with this kind of equipment including crushers and more trucks. But the head of the solid waste wanted to play politics and wanted to control the initiative, so the french backed out. We dump rubbish anywhere, concrete manufacturers empty their trucks in our rivers, we burn rubbish as will right under our neighbours nose at whatever time we like, dont even talk about the music blasting from day to night, everyday. We are the nature island, but only because we are underpopulated. otherwise you would see more garbage everywhere.

Ms. Baron, we are doing our best for cleaning the environment by getting rid of our Prime Minister. His presence is very polluting and contaminating. We need a new one. Thank you.
