Blanchard says gov’t accomplished much after Hurricane Maria

Blanchard said the government has achieved much since Maria

Minister for Planning and Economic Development, Miriam Blanchard has pointed to a number of accomplishments achieved by the present government particularly Post-Hurricane Maria.

She was delivering remarks at Parliament earlier this week.

According to her, this government was well on its way to transform Dominica before the devastation of Hurricane Maria on September 18th, 2017 and there are many accomplishments after the storm.

“I have seen the results of accomplishment this government can boast particularly after Hurricane Maria,” she said. “This being the first budget after the devastation by Hurricane Maria, I cannot help to reflect on where we were after Maria wreaked havoc on our island.”

She said under the “strong leadership” of Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, “the island’s main Hospital, the PMH continue to operate, thanks to the strong commitment of the health service providers.”

She went on to say that the supply of water and electricity to the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), despite the magnitude of Hurricane Maria, was restored one week after its passage.

“By October 1, all essential services in the City of Roseau were back on the DOMLEC grid,” she stated. “A number of businesses and residents in the Roseau, Pottersville, Lower Goodwill areas enjoyed both water and electricity services less than a month after the Hurricane. Road access to Douglas-Charles restored by September 29th, Ferry Services were again accommodated at the Ferry Terminal by mid-October.”

She mentioned also that students on island returned to school by year end and Dominica even welcomed its first cruise ship by the end of 2017.

“And the Carnival Cruise Lines that we have been negotiating with for such a long time, after last visited in 2010, in spite of the devastation to this country Carnival Cruise Lines returned to Dominica on July 10th of this year,” she explained.

Blanchard proudly said that this is further proof to show that, “this labour administration is working.”

No genuine patriotic Dominican can honestly state, with conviction, that he/she is proud of the 18 consecutive years of the stewardship of Mr. Skerrit and DLP. It’s as though every year a hurricane ravages the country. The poor and disheveled conditions of the country is a burning shame and a national scandal, no lie. Every country has its poor and indigent but too many Dominicans are experiencing hellish conditions. Look at the disparity in living conditions of the Ministers of Government and the masses. Was the goodly lady severely inebriated while on the floor? What to be proud about? Crow about the massive creation of jobs, the sturdy network of roads and bridges, the international airport and the first class berthing facilities for cruise ships. Shout about the #1 healthcare system in the sub region , the very modern sporting facilities, the second to none education system, booming agriculture. If you can’t sing about these things, take your seat and keep a still tongue.

Some of you are so silly, it looks like ls DLP that called Hurricane Maria. Some of you, it would be better to just not speak wi. You being in Ross place, having faced two major disasters in two years, would u continue to invest in that place? It is human nature to seek other alternative with hopes of minimizing cost.
From information recieved, the parent company of which ross belongs to is worth around 5billon usd. This alone tells you that they are all for profit. So what you expected DLP to do, buy out Ross? Eh?, tell me? In spite of any amount of negotiations and other discussions the ultimate decision will always be for profit, so please dont be foolishly trying to blame the DLP.

And dont call yourself labourite, u r not, u r just a corward loving to be on the winning side. If UWP ever win, u would change u name fo portsmouth uwpite. Some of u all best u just read and dont type.

Will you people come to accept and understand that there is something called the internet and what you say in Dominica is heard in England and Russia the very next second? What has this government done since the passage of the hurricane? The roads have not been touched. The horse stable/hospital remains the same. Schools are still operating in tents. Those in authority continue to boast about nothing. Why is any government official making mention about the return of a cruise line when there is no proper infrastructure? We still can accommodate ONE ship at a time. Is that something to boast about?

Once persons sell themselves to cliques and gangs then one can expect real shocking nonsense talk from otherwise intelligent humans..This is not the kind of rhetoric we should expect from respectable Ministers of Gov’t., holding basic gov’t functions as significant accomplishments?
I have always made note of the eerie compulsion of every Minister of this DLP to mention and honor their leader Skerrit every time they speak in parliament or in public meetings. Has the man collected all of their brains in a Jar at his house?

    Dear Mr. Editor,

I just want to say that the spamming content on your website is truly high. While I am all for freedom of speech and airing frustration and bringing the Skerrit administration to account, from what I continually read in these comments, are not only calculated to discredit the Prime Minister but to tarnish and destroy the good name of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

It is clear that the person (s) that writes these comments has NO interest in the welfare of Dominica. If we were on the same side, that is striving ‘to build the first climate resilient nation in the world’, he/she/they/it would have no time to spew out this garbage.

Please whoever you are, STOP disrespecting the Good name of Dominica.

How dare you ascribed improper motives to the commenters? You are very judgmental and very much out of order. For 18 consecutive years the majority of citizens have religiously voted for the incumbent party. In return, they have received inadequate housing, increasing joblessness, sparsely populated kitchen cupboards, hyper-partisanship political tribalism and I could go on ad nauseam. What do you expect the people to do, sweep the dirt under the rug? The PM is becoming more and more dictatorial. There must be an outlet for this insufferable frustration. I prefer the people to speak out to reduce their high levels of stress and discontentment than to internalize it then resort to violence. The people have the constitutional and the inalienable rights to their opinions once they don’t infringe the laws. Dominica is not North Korea, at least not yet. Go to some totalitarian country with that sort of admonition. Your self-righteous and recalcitrant personality is summarily rejected.

After 18 years you shouldn’t be trying to convince us that this worthless excuse for a government is working. After all we live here, the evidence would be clear. It’s not.

We now have a few breadfruits, a few mangoes, a few avocadoes, sweet potatoes, I now buying ripe bananas at the market 2/$1.00 and we have lots of vegetables. If all of the above is because of the government, then they working. But I can’t see how it is their doing. I see Whitchurch back and if is because of Skerrit’then they working since Maria. If they want to take credit for electricity, Flow, Digee, then they are working, since Maria. But then again these are all private companies that had to try to connect people so they could continue to make their money. As far as government working is concerned, what have they done to encourage Ross to comeback so thousands could earn a living? What about the west coast road that’s a disaster? Have they repaired the piece of road less than half a mile north of the airport? What about the many Dominicans that trying to come home and are stock either in San Juan, Antigua or Barbados because of no flights? Working? Give me a break

Lady i have listened to and watched your performance in Parliament i must say it has been dismal and lacked any substance; your are educated far more than the leader you claim has provided adequate leadership. Stop disrespecting yourself because your intellectual dishonesty is so loud it just doesn’t add up.

  9. After Eighteen Years
    August 2, 2018

My first issue with this speech is the fact that after eighteen years the government is still on the way to transforming Dominica. Exactly how far away is ‘on the way’?

Secondly it is the government’s responsibility to ‘fix’ the country after a disaster. This is nothing to be lauded and thirdly, what are these accomplishments???? carnival cruise lines making one visit to the island? Domlec doing it’s job by restoring power to emergency services….Meanwhile…

All the roads are still falling apart. Fallen poles still litter the sidewalk in country areas. So many homes are still without proper covering and we are in another hurricane season. i’m sure I don’t need to think hard to add to the list.

LOL…Lady you should be ashamed of your working government.

      Pennez Patat
I quote “She said under the “strong leadership” of Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, “the island’s main Hospital, the PMH continue to operate, thanks to the strong commitment of the health service providers.” question for you? Pennez did the Hospital ever close down after Hurricane Maria despite the challenges????
“She went on to say that the supply of water and electricity to the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), despite the magnitude of Hurricane Maria, was restored one week after its passage.” Isn’t that true Pennez?????
“By October 1, all essential services in the City of Roseau were back on the DOMLEC grid,” she stated. “A number of businesses and residents in the Roseau, Pottersville, Lower Goodwill areas enjoyed both water and electricity services less than a month after the Hurricane. Dear Pennez isn’t all of this true???? Again why are you all bent on negativism??? You and all the others??? Where is your patriotism???? Only negative. I challenge you to answer me on my ??? to you. or say what she said was not true. What is your opinion on the Cleanup etc taking into account how The destruction was on September 19, 2017? Perhaps you too like to remain sleeping in your potato (Patat). Pennez wake up and let me hear what you doing to help in the mess Hurricane Maria left. Your share of help.

Oh yes, blame it on Maria, Dominica was doing so well before Maria, Maria must have blown the state of the art passport factory, Skerrit and his gang are a MAJOR FAILURE and they have been for the last 18 year, Should I rejoice that they connected the hospitals waterline??? Boy go somewhere else with you margee :-D

My lady I like to respect everyone, particularly women, but permit me to state that you are going crazy. What are these achievements? I know your achievement after Maria was giving out ration to ingratiate yourself with the electorate. The people of Roseau North did note vote for you,and will give you a gargantuan and humiliating rejection soon. The government performance post Maria has been outrageously and conspicuously disgraceful.A myriad of houses still roofless,no public shelter built in any constituency, public building in shambles, roads are almost impassible, insults and disrespect from DLP MISLEADERS are rife,etc,etc,..Imagine how Dominica would have been, if the Red Cross,Samaritan Purse,Jehovah Witnesses, etc were not there to cover some roofs. This DLP of which you are a member of, seem to be a cursed party,a cannot do party. They botch everything they lay hands on.You Blanchard needs a serious rejection at the polls.
Where The Wicked Rule, the people Mourn
    This DLP is a Wicked…

‘I was very disappointed with Miriam’s presentation during the national budget debate. I expected her to come to the parliament and tear to pieces all the numbers presented by Hon Lennox Linton. During his rebuttal, he claimed their were lots of mathematical errors. She has always boasted that she worked at the Caribbean Development Bank, and was very familiar with numbers, related to budgets. Disappointingly, all I head from her was more of the same lagoon political mapuis.

“essential services in the City of Roseau were back on the DOMLEC grid,” do you know what is essential services? Well I will tell you … it is the Hospital and all the other places – Prison etc — Police Headquarters etc … it is not everywhere … the key word is “essential services” . When you read you must notice the essential words or else you get the wrong message. You have to do this whenever you read.

it is always easy to keep a blind eye when you are singing for your supper or repeating what you are told to say . And there is one thing I do not understand why the members of this govt keep heaping praise on skeritt ?as if he is the only one elected by the tax payers of Dominica this due to the him and that due to his vision which leads one to ask what do they do other than walk into the house to vote for his empty promises plus sing his praises .last time I looked going to parliament meant you go to speak your mind not rubber stamp a speech written by one individual and read by another

Of course they did, when the Senator had a constituency generator at her house early while parts of PMH had no lights. The generator was suppose to be placed central for use by constituents. The got lights early and demand a street light from DOMLEC while others has no lights. Of course madam, the country back on track like.

    August 2, 2018

Madam you need to upgrade your pathetic glasses so you could see what’s really going in the country. At PMH current state it can better be described as a mortuary where people await their deaths due to a poor health working environment and medication while the fortunate few, the elite, the Dominca 1% get to her overseas for REAL health care. Then you wanna talk about accomplishments. LET’S TALK. This lazy prime minister has had major accomplishments in selling our passports to criminals, reinventing NEP, distributing relief supplies based on political affiliation, red clinic, ground breaking contract signing with no completed projects, ……………………………………………………………………………………… What a leader, what a lovely handsome most loving caring sharing sexy model of a guy. Time for Dominicans to take back their country from Lucifer and vote this cesspool out of office

“I have seen the results of accomplishment this government can boast particularly after Hurricane Maria,” Blanchard said. I just want to ask what these accomplishments might be, perhaps the several thousand houses that are still covered with tarpaulin, most main roads still damaged and littered with pot holes and numerous bridges still damaged?? Blanchard, I guess the government accomplished so much that Ross University decided not to return?? Let me give you a bit of home truth, the government you are serving is useless and has accomplished very little. You and your master can’t fool us anymore. Talk is cheap…

    • ?????????
      August 2, 2018

Yes many houses are covered with tarpaulin but have you gone on the ground in all parts of the country? If you had gone on the ground after the devastation and now go back, you would have seen how many persons have benefited. You did not see what it looked like on September 19, 2017 so you cannot compare at all. Many of you are speaking from your high chair overseas. Did you see anything back then and then now so you can compare and see the strides? So then stop complaining. Me self I giving all the thanks to the Most High for where we are today compared to that disaster sight back then even the mountains are green again. Thank you Lord but we still have a lot to do. But all of you Negaters come down noh and give a hand … put your mouth where your money is. The government is a joke and you are not, let me see your prowess. Let me see what you can do. Skills come give so we can move at a faster pace. Have you heard the reviews of those who are not Dominicans??
