UPDATE: Bus drivers protest in Soufriere; commuters stranded

Scene of the protest

School children and workers from the Soufriere, Scottshead, Gallion area were left stranded on Wednesday morning, after bus drivers embarked on protest action.

The drivers have parked their vehicles on the side of the road at the entrance to the village of Soufriere and elsewhere in the community.

They are demanding immediate action to repair roads they claim are becoming more and more difficult to drive on.

Some of the protesting drivers told Dominica News Online that their plight was being ignored even after they had made repeated attempts to have the Parliamentary Representative Sam Martin address what they regard as a crucial matter.

“We are fed up and need action now…we pay taxes and we demand that the road be repaired,” was how one spokesman summed up their case.

“We are moving from (pot)hole to (pot) hole, we may get into accidents and don’t want that, we need the road fixed and now,” they said.

The protesting drivers have vowed to continue their action until their demands are met.

Speaking on local radio unofficially about the matter, Dominica Labour Party spokesman Dr Philbert Aaron said as far as he was aware, road works on the affected portions of road that the drivers are complaining about was due to begin on Wednesday.

Why is it that Dominican policemen like wearing
camouflage uniform when there isn’t a war.You dont find such in foreign developed countries – the riot squad is sent in wearing riot gear. Camouflage is for the army – is this a secret defence force within the police force?

why would i have to pay 2% of my salary for medical emergencies when i already pay insurance for that purpose? and besides the funds will have no transparency anyway, maybe to be treated like some sort of ReD Clinic .!

The Govt should look into incorporating some sort of real cheap insurance scheme for the people that is only to be used for surgical procedures that cannot be undertaken here ,due to complexity or the lack of the said surgical equipment.

Example $10 per person per month @ 22000 persons ($220,000) employed the rest of the funds should come from the crazy tax scheme called VAT which was estimated to rack in 30 million but takes 80 million annually. The excess 50 million instead of creating Jobs for the Boys and Girls , Red Clinic, party and colour favours, and much more should aid to pay the portion from the non working populus .

It is taxation sin to TAX an already ailing economy.

They spoke of Next Level and what we see is a next level of bad roads, corruption, high speed wealth accumulation among government officials; police corruption, judicial imprudence ; victimization; poverty; unemployment; dependency, Paros; religious dishonesty; lying cheating professionals, passport prostitution; invasion of aliens; the destruction of the local merchants; the destruction of Agriculture. In all of that and more we got a stadium, west coast road rehabilitation, two sea defense wall, a dismal Melleville Hall rehab, a useless presidential palace; state college which we had.

Remember we love our prime minister. get the picture ?

I agree with my bus drivers, Skerrit main focus is on developing his area and the North of the island and care less about us the people of Soufriere Scottshead and Gallion how much more can our bus drivers take enough is enough, this is not only for the bus drivers of the area, but for all drivers and pedestrians using that road, and to all those condemning the bus drivers, who in the kitchen feeling the heat and who feels it knows it

Let me reming Dominicans that, Rome wasnt built in a day. The Government is trying its best to get the road network in Dominica professionally done, it is just not Soufriere’s turn, remember they have to finish Pointe Mitchell road and sea defense.

Everybody want their road to resurface now, the village councils should come and provide materials to patch those holes temporarily until the government is ready to resurface the roads in a professional manner.

BUS DRIVERS NEED TO PAY THEIR TAXES AND THE GOVERNMENT NEED TO OWN THE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM.

Not fixing these roads is false economy and we’re sure the PM. does not even travel economy but we shall be happy with that. No more lame excuses.

But Please tell me How many of this Bus Drivers actually file their Income Tax Return at the end of March 31,2012!!They make all this money and give back the Country nothing!! Help increase the REVENUE of the Country so the ROADS can be Repaired!!

LOL…. U sound like a Tyrant. Whether u r using the road every day or occasionally the road is for all to used!! But for the Bus Driver the Bus is his office and the road is his route for a better life!!

I’m suggesting for every bus driver who don’t pay income tax and keep all the money to them self and don’t give the State a dime should be charge a dollar for every trip that they make whether u r from Scott Head or Capuchin to help Repair the ROADS of Dominica!! The further the distance the more they pay!!

PS: (Once u r a Driver u pay licensing Fees or suffer the Penalties)

    • May 2, 2012

That is a very poor excuse after these drivers have been paying taxes high loan fees and maintaining their families what else do they have but their pride if you beleive that your GOVT is not to blame why dont you go out on a tour around the ISLAND and see for yourself those in glass houses should not throw stones because it tend to fall back on them.
This is just the begining other Villages will want to take the same actions to get the GOVT to move off their bots I support the action taken by the Drivers another thing vehicles could still move around if they wanted,Now it’s up to the GOVT to take notice because this is just the begining of things to come.
The people of DOMINICA must tell themselves that they have the POWER in their hands to beable hold the GOVT resposibly and to have them work for the development of their ISLAND.
The actions of the drivers were not to prevent children from attending school or for those who had to go to work but sometimes to take a stand some folks will be inconvenient and those are just small prizes to pay for the good of all the people
      Thanks DNO for the pictures.

You are spot on re a ferry from Souferier to Roseau. They will need one, because they need to close the road for the work to be done. Its not just patching up the pot holes and laying tarmac. They need to cut out the rocks hanging over the road, put up barriers, lights etc. This is a huge task that should not be rushed.

The road should also be closed for safety reasons, not just for those doing the work, but for those travelling on it.

Any driver would have problems on those roads, whether it was gov drivers or regular drivers. That place is a tourist spot as well, with Scotts head so near and the hot water and all that. The Buses are not the problem. Remember, it’s the roads? why is is so hard to understand this issue? I don’t care if there are electric cars in Dominica. What matters though, is the deteriorating condition of the roads. They are indeed in disarray. Is there an office or an agency which deals with such matters? Roads are an integral part of the infrastructure of any country. Come on people. WAKE UP.

I agree that the road is in a deplorable condition, i understand the bus drivers concerns but this could have been handled differently. Some of the drivers are fathers and so many school children were affected by this. Children were in uniform from six o’clock this morning, the drivers could have inform the school children who travels with them on a daily basis. On the other hand the bus drivers were offered material on several occassions and they refuse because they could not come together as a group to fix the rooad. Today when it is brought to their attention they say “you think me alone could come and fix the road”. God help those who help themselves drivers. Wicked and selfish bus drivers. Get off your butts to help yourselves.

Roads or rather infrastructure of any country lies with the leaders. They are the servants. They took an oath to work for the PEOPLE. It’s not that easy after all. Is it? Patching cannot help the situation after s while. A complete road re-rehabilitation needs to be implemented. That my friend is the business of the people which were put into offices for these purposes.

This is very selfish of the drivers and I’ve always said that the bus service needs to be taken over by the government.

    Under such a condition
-Bus drivers would work for the people of dominica and be paid by them with a determined salary based on their skill and length of service in the industry. They would be paid a fixed wage.
-a consistent scheduled of routes and times can be done even at odd hours.
-There would be a set fee assessed for every passenger eg: If i want to possie to roseau I look on the schedule of fees and see tat it cost $10 and the bus driver wouldn’t be able to charge me extra at his own convenience.
-With a government regualted bus system they would encourage safety. So before every bus hits the road it would go through safety compliance meaning brakes, tires, seat belts etc
-the bus would only accommodate the number of persons that it suppose to legally and safely carry.
-The bus drivers who work for the government would have to under go background checks especially for those “aviol” perveterd men who prey on young girls so on the bus stop. They’d also be force to take safety and driving defense classes.
-All buses would be uniformly painted so passengers would clearly identify.
-With a consistent bus system there would be less need for so many cars in roseau because the service would be consistent. So anyone found driving inside the city without special permit should be fined and charged. This would definitely ease the burden of overcrowding on the road and parking on side walks!
-If bus drivers fail to join this way of providing service they would be forced to undergo rigorous tests, assessed a huge fee to be independent drivers and also have their bus scrutinized accordingly for safety. ANyone who puts the paasenger at risks would be sent to jail for a minimum of 6 months and assessed a fee.
-With a government or union run bus system everybody would win because there would constant supervision of the services provided and safety could be monitored!

These bus drivers are too greedy and selfish!

    • Robin
      May 2, 2012

Also would then add parking meters in Roseau to assess a fee to motorist in the city with or without parking permits. So you would pay for a permit to get a lower rate at the meter which could be computerized. Swipe your card that will provide for the discount. But everyone should have to pay to drive in Roseau. The operative words being “access fee”!

To call the people selfish and greedy for standing for themselves makes you ignorant. Do you know how much bus drivers pay for shocks and tires, and bearings and all the other things that the bad roads cause to detiorate faster on their vehicles? I am not a bus driver but as a vehicle owner you can see how much quicker the wear and tear is on your vehicle in bad roads. And they have to constantly drive up and down these roads not twice a day like most people. And there is no increase in bus fare because we say that the people cant afford it. So what are they supposed to do. Watch the bus they paid $90,000.00 for fall apart in no time or demand that the roads be fixed so that there investment can last a reasonable period of time?

      • Ate
        May 2, 2012

Exactly. Shocks and tires are their main concerns! Not their passengers. This whole thing is about the bus drivers not safety of the general public! If they drove like they’re are suppose to they would t be getting issues with their shocks. Tey want to run over potholes like they’re maniacs! They see nice road on the upper east coast they feel left out. Well sorry one village at a time and they can continue to affect the people of their community by being totally selfish!

    • Wesleyman
      May 2, 2012

Thats called communism sir, and it did not work. Your idea is to kill the free enterprise where a guy can take a loan buy a bus and run it to make a living, to where govt. is owning buses, giving the jobs to their supporters, and when the government does not have the money for the repairs, you have a more dire situation. Make up your minds, do you want to live in a communist state where everything is dictated by the govt? or do you want free enterprise that is regulated by the govt? If there are laws against molesting children, why do you have to be a government worker for it to be enforced? Calm down, fix the roads and let every body carve out a bread the best way they know how

      • Ate
        May 2, 2012

Nope it’s called regulation something black people hate! All over the world there are regulated bus services. This ensures safety most of the time and fair prices for services. Stop trying to spread your fear of rules and detest for things you all can’t turn into an illegal trade. It have other roads in DA that need fixing. Plus didn’t that area get road work. Sometime ago withy he new waterfrOnt area? Please next village please. Dem bus drivers just want to drive fast and overtake illegally. Been on their buses and they the worst drivers after mahaut taxis. Slow and steady. If is one time I supporting this government backed system is this time. So people can get to where they need at anytime plus if buses were to run later that would help DA businesses that suffer because people can’t get ride to go out etc

If they didn’t like to be poor they would work harder to ensure that they get the best services and products available. I really think it’s a case of people not knwing better. So whilst I shake my head in disbelief at my people I still believe they should be forced ro comply as they aren’t educated enough to do better for themselves! :-D

Dominica gave a set people just like you no ideas and always support things that Create problems for other people. In Africa Uganda there’s a taxi driver who go out of his way to ensure the kids go school even through genocide. All the money he makes he put towards keeping up his bus so he could ensure that the children get an education and their schooling isn’t interrupted. The children are the future an those bus drivers are being selfish! I’m sure their kids got to school on their father bus! You’re a complete moron for coming on here being rude. You must be one of those selfish bus drivers. It will have a government who will do just that just you wait!

    • Brooklyn Resident
