UPDATE: Elford Henry described as honest, faithful, hardworking

Elford Henry

A very positive individual and faithful member of the (Dominica) Labour Party – that’s the tag former Trade Minister NAN Ducreay is putting on the late Elford Henry who passed away on Friday morning at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

“He stood with the Labour party throughout the years, he was very articulate, he was very competent, and he was a person who could be relied upon – he was honest and straightforward,” the elderly Ducreay said of Henry.

According to the former trade minister, Elford Henry has left “some kind of footprint” in the sands of time.

He also rated Henry highly as a politician who tried hard to fulfill his promises.

Attorney Henry Dyer, himself a former parliamentarian, described Elford Henry as “very honest, committed, hardworking” and someone who made a sterling contribution.

“He was a committed Dominican, we have lost a good man,” Dyer told Dominica News Online.

Referring to his legacy, attorney/politician Dyer said Henry made a significant mark in agriculture and was a “true patriotic Dominican”.

Elford Henry was not in parliament at the time Social worker Neva Edwards served as Speaker of the House.

But she remembers him as “a good person in local government, a good citizen who worked for the benefit of his country, in social and other areas of development”.

The former Speaker told DNO that Dominica had lost an individual who had a great deal of knowledge especially in the areas of local government and agriculture, and that she hope he had been able to pass on some of that knowledge.

In addition to having been a parliamentarian, Henry served as chairman of the Banana Industry Trust, was a member of the Board of Directors of the AID Bank, and a former operations manager at the then Dominic Banana Marketing Corporations.

He served as parliamentary representative for Wesley for a number of years.

He was also able to boast of having his hand directly in the soil as an active farmer

Timothy revealed one of Henry’s sayings which he cherishes; “If you don’t have, you should always wish that your friend had as that is the only way you can enjoy it and I remember that up to this day”.

But remember Francisco is very knowledgeable about Wesley and we have to learn from him and respect the good things that was done by Mr Henry in Dominica. Dominica have a problem in having an international air port because Dominica is to mountainous. our only solution is building an airport in the the sea. if we make an international airport the plane will crashing on the mountain. and it would be to expensive for dominica to maintain an international airport anyhow

Marguerite, I do not mind you call me an idiot, I’ve been called worst than that, but as I said the bitter and the sweet must go together, if you are worried about what I said about Henry, I doubt he would be upset because there was some genus in the man.

He functioned in his capacity very effectively, and in spite of him been an obstructionist, I admire the man, your problem right now is that you may have form the opinion that I am humiliating him or tarnishing him, if that was my purpose, I would not mention a word about him, for doing so I would be humiliating myself, have you forgotten that the man is also related to me?

He was born because his father was born form a mother who’s madden mane was Telemaque

I doubt any body who really knows him would realize not even him would get angry with me for reading the truth about himself.

And by the way I do not live in Wesley, but boy I can tell you what is going on in my village right at this moment, if there is one person in Wesley who has not eaten any yet for the day, Francisco, the kid from the mud know about it.

I am yours truley, perhaps a little bit of moo-moo in me but I am not an idiot not jansott oui!

Francisco, you should organize an article with DNO. In it you will get an opportunity to tell us your family history. A family tree. It will outline the contributions made to the development of the village of Wesley and Dominica on a whole by your great family. Do not forget to include you and the others educational background (children, grandchildren, etc.). There you can also list the bitter and the sweet about you and your family. Since you are so keen on calling names, you will get an opportunity to list the number of Doctors (health professionals), Lawyers, Engineers, Teachers (professors etc.), Police officers, firemen, jailbirds, Accountants, Bankers, Chefs, etc. that your great family has produced.

I am waiting for that one. I am sure I am not the only one.

Mr. Elford Henry, R.E. we called him. He was an Icon son of Wesley and I would go even further to call him Mr.Wesley. He championed the cause for Wesley. Every opportunity he got he sang our praises and lead the fight against what he felt would negatively impact Wesley residents. He remain steadfast and commited inspite of the challenges he faced, he remainded involved in the community and was never silent. Now his voice is silence who will take up the mantle?

Rest in peace son of Wesley, you will be missed by many. To his Wife, children, brother, sister and many nieces and nephews my condolences to all of you.

,” the elderly Ducreay said of Henry.”

DNO, the bitter and the sweet must go together, it is al well and good when someone die that we all remember the good, but there are always to sides to every individual, now I noticed that my comments about Elford, is still in limbo, not posted, I suspect it because of what I said to Wesley girl.

I would also like to shed some light on the man, because I know him very well, better than D you see, I remember him from way back when I was a toddler. By then Ducrey never spent a day in Wesley, indeed he to is related to Elford, due to the great name they have in common; that name which starts with a ” T ” so when you see me commenting on these guys the kid knows them well.

The seriousness about Henry is that indeed he was a very honest man, he was self educated, never sat in a secondary school of his life, and perhaps did not finish the seventh standard in his time in Elementary when I was a kid he walked with the Bible every day, that how he expanded his ability to actually learn to read, he had company, another relative of his was in the same boat like him, incidentally the other relative of his is also named Elford, who died about eleven years ago.

I am not putting them down, since the other Elford late Elford has a son who is a practicing medical in Dominica.

Back to Elford Henry, he did not start life as a farmer as some claim, however his first Job, was a given, and that was because of the connection his father James Henry, who was a Sub-poster in the Village of Wesley, and also had the responsibility of maintain our small water supply at the time.

Elford Henry first job and his only outside of politics was to supervise a gang of guys who worked for the Banana Association, walking on the Banana plantations carrying a machine on their backs spraying a chemical on the bananas which the British claim could control and prevent Leaf-spot on the banana leaf’s.

I remember distinctly, his first week on the job we were at Hempstead dynamiting fish (Big Jack ) to be precise, on his way home he did not want to dive for the fish, and none of the older boys and men from the village wanted to give him some fish, I the kid of eight years old dove in the see, picked up some fish and gave to him.

Shortly after that, the Banana Association promoted him, gave him gray Land Rover, and sent him to manage an office in Roseau that was located near the old ice factory at Goodwill, he worked there, ha also gave a guy from Wesley, his cousin a job, one who cannot read to this day, so that is one good he did

After his tenure in that position he went into politics, however, in all his honesty, he did not do his job as a representative of our people.

That is the truth, and everybody in Wesley knows that, we tolerate and like the man because that is the way we are in Wesley, we cannot afford to dislike or hate anybody from Wesley and Marigot, because six are one half a dozen of the other.

And by the way that cousin of his, and mine who cannot read to this day who he made his chief mechanic, also have some very smart children, in the medical profession, and computer engineer, and teachers too.

I critique him because he was an obstructionist, he help in the obstruction of the building of our International Airport, and any body who goes against we airport will here from me, the last time I was at home he came visiting with my late dad, they both made a fool out of me, when they joked I am a visiting Canadian moo-moo!

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!

I am finished: DNO print it or not this is the truth, and so I am also going to disseminate it in a blog in another forum.

As for that Ducreay, I tried to buy a bit of land from him overlooking the ocean at Woodford Hill, to build a house just incase I return home, my father was dealing with him and that, he eventuall simply told my dad, ” I doh selling him my land.

Well, daddy Hector gone, Elford gone, Ducreay will go, Francisco will go also, and God land and sea will forever be!

Tell us more about the Airport. How much did he get paid etc.

      • Francisco Telemaque
        July 16, 2012

I never said Elford Henry got paid to obstruct the building of the Airport if that is where you are going with that; I know for a fact, he refused to give up his place of residence at Hunt, which is directly in the flight path.

He bought that property from an old English retired doctor, who returned to England, perhaps he was love with the location and refused to move in defiance simply to prove to
Edison James that he detested the construction of the airport.

Let me tell you this, the night in the meeting when Athie declared war, on the UWP, and said he was going to see if he can get all the other political party together to fight Edison James, Elford Henry was one of the key speakers in the meeting, along with my personal friend Mona George Dill.

Peter Carbon, and I sat in the home of his sister, who is married to my cousin Emlord Timothy, after the meeting Athie, came upstairs, and do not have to tell you what we did and talked about, that’s only for the political heavyweights to know.

In any event I had the load down on Elford’s behavior, as a matter of fact I warned him in a letter, that he was behaving precisely like his father, and be careful he did not leave a legacy as him.

If you are fishing for something detrimental to his character, you will not here that from me, I’ve spoken the truth about him, and everything I said can be substantiated, and verified.

The letter I wrote to him from here when I found out he was protesting the building of the airport, I still have a copy, and by the way that word above ” fishing ” was one of his favorite words, he used it in describing the letter I wrote to him, no reason to tell you why he thought I was fishing, but I heard him in the meeting the night using one of my words too ” there is no magic wand to the building of the airport.”

When I told one of my cousin he was quoting me that cousin did not believe me until I went into my lugged and took out a copy of the same letter I wrote to Elford.

So there you have it, the man was just an eloquent speaker, that was his trade mark, he had a golden voice, so too are people such as Simon Richards our former Ambassador, also from Wesley, and his own brother, Fred Cold-Burg Henry the late, unlike his brother who was highly educate scholastically, who fluently spoke wrote seven different languages; the beauty about Elford is that the man was self thought, self educated, I give him credit for that.

He and Elford Benjamin would spend every waking moment they had to spare using the Bible as a teacher, that’s how they became effectively literate!

Nonetheless, I will never forget he was an obstacle in the way of the International Airport.

This is not edited, so the kid doh know if it is riddled errors eh!

May your departed soul rest in peace Sir, you served the country well.

As a Dominican youth during the days Mr. Henry served as a parliamentarian, I was always very impressed with his eloquence, clarity of thought, passion, pride for country, his practical approach, and his ordinary John Doe intellect, and wisdom.

Listening to people like Mr. Henry, Pattison Alexander Strathmore Stevens, Micheal and Roosie Douglas and Mary Eugenia Charles (all deceased) brings back fond memories. I learnt a lot about Dominica and nurtured a positive vision for Dominica from those patriotic citizens.

This was an era of our political development when men and women served with honour, dignity and pride. They were more concerned with their responsibility of serving their constituents and country rather than their social status and the accumulation of wealth from the country’s limited resources. These fundamental traits in our political development as a nation are no more and for these reasons we will miss Mr. Henry. There is no comparison with what we have today. Whether or not one disagreed with Mr. Henry’s politics, the man was very articulate, bright and competent.

Interestingly, the things that the former Trade Minister NAN Ducreay have said about Mr. Henry cannot be attributed to him as one who has not been honest, faithful and true to the Labour Party-never mind his cheer leading role today of Labour and his obsession in calling the animal programme.

Unlike Mr. Ducreay, who once championed the cause of the UWP on political platforms as a strong supporter of Timothy and Prevost and who stood with the UWP during the Party’s better days, Mr. Henry stood with the Labour party throughout the years, and he was a person who could be relied upon even to the point of opposing proposed developments in the Wesley, Marigot and Woodford Hill area under the UWP- Mr. Henry will certainly leave to mourn-Mr. Edison James. We recall his forceful opposition to the purchase of lands for the construction of the proposed International Airport in the Londondary area. Nevertheless, he served his country well. RIP honourable citizen.

Elford Henry made a significant contribution to Dominica’s development in a marvellous career spanning more than five decades. His contribution to agriculture and local government is well known. But for me personally I recall how as an opposition senator in the period 1980-1985 he formed a great partnership with Mike Douglas and together, in their contributions to the House were able to eloquently expose the dictatorial tendencies, victimization and shortsightedness of the Freedom Party Government which at that time dominated the parliament 17-2-2.In one of his contributiions in parliament during that period he said:” there is misery in Dominica like sand on the seashore”.

In later years he was able with his huge experience serve as PRO of the ruling DLP. I always found his comments as DLP PRO eloquent, balanced and informative.

I will personally miss his wisdom and his calm and dignified demeanor. My condolences to his widow and the rest of his family. May his soul rest in eternal peace

Well sorry my dear Travailw, I make no apology because that thing we call politics is serious in life and death- once a politician always a politician. So let the people express themselves. It is not a sign of disrespect for the dead. In fact this is the type of person Elford was. He was an eloquent, committed and all consummate politician. Who would protect the right of each person to speak freely about him, even in his death. In raise political issues on his death –he would be honoured.

Everything is and has to be about politics. Politics consist of the activities that are associated with the governance of a country and the activities of our government and those who participate or have participated in that process. Politics is about our life and our political beliefs or principles relating to or inherent in activities concerning power and status. It concerns itself with activities aimed at improving the socio-economic status of people or giving representation to people even to the extent that as a politician one helps to increase the power of the people. This, my dear friend was what Mr. Henry was all about in the way he lived his life. Mr. Henry was an integral part of that process to his death and we cannot run away from that.

I know of his sterling contribution to political education, agriculture, local government, the credit union movement, and development banking in Dominica. He is credited with giving me the greatest compliment I ever received: that I write like the late Sir Winston Churchill. I laughed when he repeated it on a differeent occasion. Oh no! I think you have it wrong. Dr. Valda Henry’s father died some years ago and he was Elkin Henry from Mahaut

      Point of correction.
Dr. Valda Henry’s father is not the late Elford Henry of Wesley but was the Very Very late Elkin Henry of Mahaut, who himself was a politician.

You have just exposed the kind of person you are. Wishing everything in Dominica to be bad. Please see the brighter side. The PMH has saved many many lives including your own and many of your family over many many years. Do not take down the PMH for your selfish, perhaps political motives.

      • July 13, 2012

Come on people the pmh have its up and down and i do think we need to try and solve the problem.no disrespect to eany one .

        July 14, 2012

But what has Morihei Ueshiba said that is factually inaccurate or untrue ?. Were they not all productive Dominicans, and did they not all died at PMH ?. I don’t see the issue here.

      @ Morehei

You make me laugh. We did not come here to remain permanently. This world is not our home. Therefore, while we are here, we must make the most and best use of our time in the Lord that when that day comes, He will say to us: “Well done my good and faithful servant…”

Morihei or whatever your name is speaking the truth. What has happened to our health services in Dominica, must all Dominicans go overseas for treatment or is it a Cuban doctor problem? How much more Dominicans must die for us to address this issue? Political watcher what is your motive?

      July 13, 2012

This may not be the time for me to rap you on this one, but I think it is time that some people learn to deal with the English language, and use it properly.

      ” Ma Elford! ”

What is what do you mean by Ma Elford?

Couldn’t you simply say ” Mrs. Elford,” or better yet in this case say Mrs. Henry, which is the appropriate way to say it!

In French it is ” Madam. ”

In English it is supposed to be ” mistress.”

This thing ” Ma ” is an old uneducated peasant patios talk which has nothing to do with linguistics.

That nonsense cannot be found in any dictionary, and certainly does not abbreviate mistress, nor in French Madam.

All of my life I heard people refer to my late grandmother as ” Ma John,” and my late mother as ma Hilborne. I could never understand the nonsense. Intelligent people are supposed to act, speak, and write intelligently, if you are a peasant on a slave plantation so be it act; speak, and write as a peasant.

Now back to Elford, I would also like to extend my condolences to his immediate family also

However, though it is noted that he was the parliamentary represented for Wesley, there is nothing we the people of Wesley can point to and say we got this because of him, he was just another obstacle in the way of development in the village, and Dominica in general.

Yes, he was one of those who placed many obstacles in the way of the International Airport, where his house is located is in the flight path of the International Airport which the UWP were building, the man refused to corporate and accept payment for his property as the other people in the same situation.

So whereas, some may have revered him for many years, his legacy I doubt many of us who knows him hope to forget quickly.

I know that some Wesley, or Marigot kid is going curse me out because of this, but do not waste your time, because I know who I am talking about, so let me short circuit it here and say his father, the you called ” Gems ” his was James Henry, and be reminded James Henry’s mother had an biological name such as ” The great name Telemaque ” you see, so don’t sweet it, as I am the a kid from that same red mud of Wesley.

Seriously, sometimes I look forward to reading your post but I must say lately the only word I can find to describe you is found in the english dictionary….IDIOT. En espanol “es un imbécil de tomo y lomo.” In french …”Tu es completement debile”

Let the people who live in Wesley do the talking. There is a lot more I would want to add to this piece, however I will let the man’s soul rest in peace. I’ve met you before and I am sure I will meet you again, rest assured that the next time we meet I will identify myself and we will finish this conversation.

There is a time and place for everything and this is not the time nor the place for this one.
