Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Marcella Powell has died suddenly.
DNO was told she died on Tuesday morning at the Princess Margaret Hospital.
The cause of her death is unknown but DNO understands that she has been sick recently.
DNO is seeking further information on this breaking news.

On the last day of Creole In The Park, Marcella and I traveled to Dominica on the same flight. We worked together many years ago at the Post Office and I was happy to bump into her at the Airport in Antigua. We chatted a bit and she was her usual happy self. I am truly surprised by the news of her death.

Could anyone believe that this hard and dedicated lady who stayed here in Dominica have worked all those years to build the government system. The report card shows the system is not able to provide proper health service to keep our people alive.
This is an indictment on the governing party.
i heard of the death of Gwen Ifill of PBS and I could not believe it; but then i heard that she suffered from cancer. Her family and close friends were aware. To the TV watching world it was sudden but not to those close to her. She was ill with a terminal illness. A great loss to the media world, but her death was not sudden. I saw Don Lemon on CNN cried showing real feelings as he told us of Gwen’s death.
When I read the DNO headline, it said Ms Powell died suddenly; my first thought was she just collapsed and died with no prior illness, scary; later in the same article it says, she was ill for some time. We should try not to sensationalize death. Real people are hurting and mourning, we should show a little more concern.

Sorry to say but this is what happens when your health system is not a priority. Getting a new facility will not make a difference. Too many of the doctors and nurses work only for a paycheck. An excellent health system begins with your work force. It’s time to stop praising mediocrity. Lets praise and honor the hard working doctors and nurses but there are some that need to go, period. The sad thing is that the minister of health knows them. I think it’s time we call them out by name if that’s what it takes.

Why are you only blaming the establishment and not the health issues she had. Come on people!!! I’m/we are aware of the inadequate Heatlh System and crisis that we are facing on Island but look at the Patient Health also!. There is enough Blame to go around, starting from the Top.. Health department to the Ward Aide. Needs to be Fixed…..
A health system cannot mandate what people eat and if they exercise. Dominicans need to take control of their health and make good life style choices. Obesity and the diseases which stem from this is too rampant in both adults and children.
The lady died unexpectedly. She was ill for some time and hospitalized. This is not a case of SDS; why the alarming headline?
