UPDATE: Policemen stage sickout

Photo from the Marigot Police Station

Policemen at out stations all across the island have taken  protest action on Saturday.

DNO was initially informed that police officers in Marigot and Portsmouth are on sickout.

Police sources told DNO on Saturday morning that the actions are a ‘first dose’ and it is understood that more police officers might do the same in solidarity.

An executive member of the Police Welfare Association (PWA) subsequently confirmed to DNO that police officers in all out stations on the island are today operating on skeleton staff.

Reports are that the officers are complaining of poor working and living conditions.

In March, policemen at the Portsmouth Police Station complained of poor working conditions.

DNO was also informed that the working conditions at the Marigot Police Station are deplorable.

National Security Minister, Rayburn Blackmoore, has said that monies were set aside for the rehabilitation of the Portsmouth Police Station.

The police and the government are also at odds over salary negotiations.

DNO is following this developing story and will publish further information as it becomes available.

Nothing New Here! That’s how police operate in Dominica normally. Ever called them about a disturbing the peace situation? Or a neighbor making your life miserable with their loud music disturbing the peace. Just ask the same police if there’s a ‘Noise Abatement Act’ that’s supposed to protect our citizens from each other. They immediately get into go-slow mode. Nothing new here.

HAILER Hoorah hailer hooray while we breaking ground for new hotel there and everywhere police stations, schools, health centres, roads , and Marigot hospital is in total disarray but we all over the place Labour ka travvez! The garbage situation in Dominica is at crises levels; drive around the island for yourself to see the new tourism product that welcomes you it is disgusting to see.; we cant find money to fix that but we have money to sponsor rally in Possie with Volney and to host ground breaking at the new Jungle bay. Ask for that owner he must have a mint printing money machine somewhere just suffered a major loss from TS Erika and the collapse of his airline – in such a situations any business man would belly up but this guy goes around like that’s ok we ll just start again while others like farmers roads and other small businesses who require much needed assistance to increase production have to beg and remain in line especially if you are not of the right colour -RED.

The gov\’t should not be the only one to shoulder the blame. What is the role of the PWA? Is it only restricted to negotiating for salary increase and promotion for themselves…
The PWA should ensure that their members have suitable working conditions.

Very good job comrads. Let’s keep up the pressure until the job is accomplished. I am calling on all officers to join the fight on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. In like manner I call on the nurses, the teachers, the farmers, bus drivers and all concerned citizens to shut down this country for the whole of next week, so Skerrit could understand that he will not make us a pampa country

Police playing politics. The conditions of these out stations did no deteriorate overnight. Were the officers incharge of of these stations not reporting on the conditions of these buildings? The buildings can not fix themselves.

What?? In little DOminica, are you suggesting that the authorities “did not know” that the conditions were deploarable? They know every individual who needs funds to buy a house, fix a hole, diaper their baby, but conditions in the POLICE STATIONS are a mystery? Get real. This attempt to deny or ignore REAL problems in the country serves NO one!

    • May 21, 2017

Anon are you serious?, I am residing outside of Domimica, and listening to s high ranking police officer of the Commonwealth of Dominica calling on a particular radio station each and every day, threatening and insulting those who are not supporting the Labour Party Administration and nothing is being done about his behavior, no disciplinary action against him, instead of him doing what he is being paid to do, which is to serve and protect all which is mandatory, he is on Sovial Media/radio calling each and every day, in this neck of the World where I am residing he would have been fired, this police officer is a political slave to his political master, the PM of Dominica period, only in Dominica, so rewind and come again with your hogwash double standard comment

      Politics? Politics? Politics?

Do you know of governments poor record of building maintenance? Do you work in the public service? Every time empolyees of the STATE take a stand is politics they playing?

    • Anon, you are a confounded jackass!

Even if there is a an officer in charge of a police station, he cannot compel a government to repair a station house. Polices officers are not responsible for the dictating of when a government building should be repaired.

In every country, there are maintenance crew who oversee schedule maintenance of government infrastructure, including roads. When I was a kid the road from Portsmouth to Concord was maintained like clock work every year during the colonial days!

Shut up and stop talking fart. The Hospital next door that same police Station is now closed, due to infestation of termite, mole and other rodents.

If you think the police are playing politics, the doctor” Christmas” who was in charge of the hospital is from Marigot, another red devil, one of Skerrit puppets, who ran against Lennox and rejected by Marigot people! The Portsmouth Police Station is in the same dilapidated condition.

    • Papa Dom
      May 22, 2017

17 years is a long time for the buildings to deteriorate, wouldn’t you say? I m sure the conditions have/were reported but the powers that be failed to take action so now that the police is being offered 0%,0% and 0%, they have decided that the can no longer live with the bad conditions in addition to that. Have you heard of the straw that broke the Carmel’s back? Well the offer of 0% is the straw.

Some of you don’t even know what to say. When the officers do their work some of u criticized them and when they take a stand you still criticize them so nothing is good for you people. The officers are paid to serve and protect and it doesn’t mean they have to give the bandits take control of our beloved country. The officers are now fedup enough is enough so they’re taking a stand. I can’t believe people who are the security of the state are treated so badly. • May 22, 2017

Good advise to those at home and those in the diaspora It was time the good policemen and women in Dominica come to grip with what is going on the Island and stop burring their heads in the sand , they need the public and the public need them come together and work to make the changes needed to put the Island on solid footing. The PM and Blackmore should be held responsible for all that is happening to Dominica and not those persons who decided to speak out against them.

What are the priorities of the present government? The safety and security of the citizens should be at the top. The police officers should be well trained, highly motivated, properly equipped with the tools and resources they need in order to execute their duties efficiently and effectively. Does anyone expect the police to be at their best while working under these deplorable conditions? They have to work in dilapidated, rat and cockroach infested buildings, lack of vehicles, denial of promotion, in a fiercely politicized institution. Why can’t the police men and women be reasonably compensated when the Senior Counsel is paid handsomely for bringing many frivolous lawsuits against fellow Dominicans? We should demand better!

What a shame on the opposition.

I would prefer the sick out to be on Tuesday. If their is a sick out on Tuesday, Skeritt will give all police officers what ever they want. The police has been begging for an increase of salaries, here is a great opportunity, do not turn up for work on Tuesday or don’t stop the patriots during their demonstration at the parliament on Tuesday.

Dominica was before 2000, a country that could look after all these basic needs. 17years later, a highly corrupt and incompetent gang of feckless greedies have turned it into a poverty stricken state. To confirm this, the leader of the corrupted country is implying to the world that parents cannot even afford to buy PAMPERS for their children, let alone to repair a police station. Will repairing the police station generate votes???? I AM JUST ASKING…. WHERE THE WICKED RULE, THE PEOPLE MOURN!

If you want your calls be heard why don’t you guys plan a sick out on Tuesday when you know they are going to need you all for the opposition protest, but no you all want to have your cake and eat it. When people protest for cause it is to send a clear message and to show the value of the organization and how it will be affected

Hope that the other police officers will show SOLIDARITY…It is downright unconscionable that a political party can be all over the country giving FREE MONEY to its supporters for political patronage, while the basic things that the country are in need of are absolutely and totally abandoned..
I am hoping that it is not a one day thing, but it the sign of what is to come from the wider police force, which is largely a HEADLESS and failed institution.
Once again,I APPLAUD YOU ALL ACTION!!!!!..Demand that Skerrit buy you all HELMETS ,before GOING INTO THIS trap TO SECURE FILES, because some of the debris might come crashing down on you al heads…

This is just crazy. While CBI money is being dished out left, right and center, police officers are forced to work in deplorable and inhumane conditions, with no vehicles at times. Labor is working hard to destroy the Nature Island of the Caribbean.

I am hoping for more sick outs from Headquarters and other village police stations. We have had enough if Skerrit and his band of reckless bandits.
Civil servants,….workers come out in support to have “Skerrit must Go”.
This man iz a political nuisance buying loyalty cheaply. Lets all rise Dominicans and kick Skerrit out. We deserve better.

An enormous shame on Rayburn Blackmore. One who speaks so much and is known for his grandstanding has hardworking police officers working under these deplorable and antiquated conditions in 2017. Get off every talkshow blackmore and get to work.

Well, don’t blame the man. He could not go beyond corporal so he become a government minister instead.

Its time the police officers wake up and see the abuse of Roosevelt Skerrit. Enough is enough. We need the officers on the side of the citizens who they should be representing anyway.
