BREAKING NEWS: Shots fired at Parliament (with video)

Scene near the parliament

Shots were fired at Parliament on Tuesday afternoon just as proceedings ended for lunch.

Reports are that protesters tried to break through barricades around the Parliament building.

At this point, it is unclear who is responsible for the shots.

The Third Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament convened on Tuesday morning.

Protesters had gathered close to the Parliament building under the watchful eyes of the police.

They had gathered to express their displeasure over a Bill to amend the House of Assembly (Elections) Act.

Police Chief Daniel Carbon had warned that there will be no protest outside the parliament building and he was mandated by law to protect the proceedings.

DNO is following this developing story.

Dominicans are tired of the none sense that is going on in this country. People have right to demonstrate (peacefully).when was the last time you see Dominicans behaving like this, since Patrick John was in power.now the peopl cannot take it anymore and they think that Skerrit must go and I’m behind them 100%. I travel to Dominica every year sometimes twice a year and it is sad to see no improvement in this place, I could to other place and vacate but I love my country and is always happy to come back home but it’s sad to see the place. I will not fly to Dominica to vote ,I don’t live there so I have no right to go back and vote there . I will live that to those who reside there, how they make their bed that’s how they will sleep.

Let everyone keep asking what is happening in Dominica. You have seen/read for yourselves that a bunch of hooligans, spurred on by evil and an evil leader have done this. They are out to destroy their own country.
Whoever is caught should feel the full brunt of the law with no bail or parole. If caught with guns, be it at their homes, an additional sentence should be meted out to them.
May their attorneys not make the foolish statement that this is their first offense and they did not waste the Court’s time.

Skerrit is in a good position to decriminalize Marijuana because most US States and other big countries are pushing for the legalization of medical marijuana. But that he will not do because it will not be in his personal interest. In most cases he knows is poor people children that will be arrested and jailed and the man does not care a damn against poor people’s children except during election time. He only knows how to use poor people’s children to get to where he wants to go. Furthermore, he will not push to legalize it because poor people’s children will have a legal means of making money and become independent, and that contradicts Skerrit’s vision of keeping them poor so they have to depend on him for pampers and soon pads for their girl. Skerrit What ever is in his personal interest he will do what it takes to rush to parliament to make illegal legal. In his 17 years in office can anyone point to anything that was illegal and hurting people that he made legal to help us?

  10. Illegal becomes Legal
    May 23, 2017

The police better stand up against this things now because the way Skerrit going there you could tell is only God can stop him, and today we think is opposition he hurting but tomorrow it might be a law that will directly hurt the police. In the environment of illegal stuff becoming legal I would not at all be surprised to see him use his majority in office tomorrow to make illegal guns become legal, especially if he knows that will protect him and help keep him in power. Skerrit is NOT concerned about Dominica and what’s in our interests. The IPO was in his interest, so he changed the law to protect him and his villas; This time he making election bribe legal for his personal good, so he could enjoy immunity. Why is he not making marijuana legal? We heard his keynote speaker from Trinidad making that call during the DLP convention; but he will NOT push for that because it is not in his interest! he is not going to legalize it because is poor people’s children that will be arrested

      May 23, 2017

There is no way any opposition is going to ever win an election again in Dominica at the polls. The ruling DLP has changed and will keep changing the constitution to suit them. Because they have a majority whom accepts everything whether it is wrong or right. No other PM would be every happier. I will not be surprised if a law is passed making it mandatory to send ten percent (10%) of earnings from CBI earnings to the DLP. One of the reasons this is never going to change is because the majority of Dominicans are poor. As long as you can flaunt monies in their faces (can’t blame them) they will run to you. The pockets of the DLP is overflowing with money, no opposition can compete with that. They just don’t have the means.

Ask yourself why a gov’t would try to legalize BRIBERY and TREATING? This is illegal in darn near every country in the world for a reason — it takes away the point of democracy by making it a pay-for-play exercise. The Prime Minister is protecting himself and government from a lawsuit because their guilt is clear…and Dominicans like you won’t dare open your mind and ask a question. Dominica can be FARRR better than it currently is if only citizens demand better of their government. Keep accepting all foolishness and think it is a UWP problem. When you see other island nations THRIVING while Dominica still celebrating flushing toilets you will know why!

Blacks all over the world are in a steady state of war and don’t even know it. Every prime minister , president , chief of police , minister of criminal justice must go back 400 yrs to see what was done to us and why we behave the way we do. In the United States we still have people saying black lives matter , where in Asia they are building airplanes. In dominica blacks are fighting blacks like savages over power . We have a very small population with a country large enough to feed the entire caribean , we are all over the place firing shuts and burning our own country , I am not here to condemn any one , as long as we don’t understand we will continue to think the government is the one to solve all black people’s problems . Slavery and the British screwed us up, all over the world we are still beggers waiting for some one to solve our problems , that will never happen, I hope both sides will sit down together as to African worries and talk about solving the problems .

    • Shaka Zulu
      May 23, 2017

If after 400 years we still blaming those folks for having us fighting today then all what they said about us is true. And based on how I see our people allow themselves to be treated by our government, note I said allow themselves, black people can still be enslaved again. As a matter of fact it seems like the only way to slap some sense in some black folks is to enslave them and whipp thier backs daily. Skerrit is very aware of that that is why he getting away with crap. To keep a man a slave, you keep him dependent, you keep him ignorant, you control what he reads or learns, you tell him he is incapable and he believes it. All this has been going on for over a decade in Dominica. Blacks also have a reputation of enslaving thier own to feel superiority. Most people choose to remain enslaved and ignorant. The last scientific Discovery in the Caribbean was Dr leaky in Jamaica who created a new breed of cattle. Today we have people who still into obeah. What do you expect.

    • Daryl Joseph
      May 23, 2017

Totally agree with you, and to add to that we are the one created our own problem. I don’t see if any other color asking us to fight each other.
So sad how would have ever thought we can’t even move past 1979.
The politician know that people are unemployed that why they can easily say let’s go protest.
If one party is corrupt the other party clearly have no show the blue print to move the country forward.
Dominican we call each other stupid BUT that’s far from the truth. Some one can’t asking you to jump without asking what for.

@hendricksismael Most of what you have stated is rumbling frivolity. Slavery and British rule certainly had some adverse effects on our lives. Today, it is avaricious, selfish, corrupt, and egotistical leaders and their servile, gullible and ignorant supporters who are creating much of the trouble in the world and more specifically in the Caribbean. You are insinuating that Black people have an innate disposition for violence, I am paraphrasing. This should be severely condemned. People like you tend to focus on the negative and play blind to the positives. Do your research and you should be proud of the many black inventors, scientists, doctors, astronauts, professors, and I could continue ad infinitum. Yes, we can do better but I’m tired of people like you passing a damning indictment on an entire race for the actions of a minority.

People are responsible for themselves. God gave them a life and if they choose to waste it and do harm to their very own, they will bear the consequences. They should not blame anyone but themselves. Note what they are doing to their own country? Such people do not care. Why feel sorry for them? They are out to destroy their own country and whoever is in their path and obstruct them.

    • Road2Mahaut

I agree. Dominicans, African-Caribbeans, Africans, melanated people CHOOSE to service a system and the living history of European domination, by willingingly participating in their economics, policies and institutions. Too afraid and ashamed to establish a broad functioning and holistic social and economic reality of our own we express our grievances at a petty level rather than doing some fundamental work. We are too afraid and ashamed to look in the mirror in order to be able to do what is necessary and successfully. I can only put it in these terms: therest needs to be change, revolution or whatever you want to call it on the scale of what we suffered, ie slavery and colonialism for there to be proper change. Are you hearing me ? Here we are on a small island fighting over petty things when the real problem is historic, entrenched much greater. You children will willingly sacrifice their identity and culture to a global imperialist technological white supremacist mono cultur
