Broken glass found in Ketchup

Arrow indicates glass found in ketchup bottle

A ”big piece of glass-bottle(broken glass)” in a bottle of tomato ketchup – that’s what a resident of Layou reports having discovered after purchasing the item from a retail shop in the area.

The woman told Dominica News Online that it was the second time that she used the item that she made the shocking discovery.

According to her, the small bottle of MP Ketchup was well sealed and well covered when she bought it.

“I used from the Ketchup a first time, but then on my second use when I was going to stew meat, I pour de ketchup but in pouring out I hear some noise, so I shook the bottle and heard the noise again,” she said.

She says after pouring out the contents of the bottle into a container, she saw “a big piece of glass bottle in the ketchup”.

“My body shivered, I get cold because I am checking like what, I maybe end up you know eating glass bottle because I used it before,” in making peleau, she explained.

The concerned woman says she got in touch with MP agent Astaphan’s on Thursday March 1 (2012), and was asked to bring in the ketchup and the offending glass bottle.

She told DNO that the response was not satisfactory, and after repeated calls to the agent, decided to take the matter to the press after several weeks.

The Layou resident told DNO that her intention was not to make the agent or the manufacturer lose business, but insisted that she is owed a satisfactory response.

She wants an apology for what happened, and says she thought of taking legal action “but finance doesn’t permit me”.

“I’m afraid of using Ketchup now and every time I see ketchup, my stomach rumbles,” she said.

Her recommendation to the manufacturers (Trinidad-based) is “to move from breakable (bottles) to plastic”.

When DNO contacted Astaphan’s about the matter, a spokesman said the company had no comment.

    May 10, 2012

People look on the other side. There could also be an argument that the glass bottle went into the MP ketchup accidentally or intentionally at the home of the complainant. How about that?

    May 10, 2012

If she is think of suing the company, it will be very difficult to prove her case, since she could have planted the broken class in the ketchup after opening it herself.

This is not about blaming Astaphans or asking if they are the ones who put the glass in the bottle? Astaphans is the agent and they have a responsbility to the consumer on behalf of the brand they promote and increase their profit margin from plain and simple. For those of you who still wallow in ignorance this is not at all far fetched. So because the glass didn’t fall out on the first use it’s coming from her home? clearly it moved as the substance reduced from use. Most places in the civilised world would gladly give this woman a voucher for groceries and then speak to their supplier behind the scenes.

Astaphans or any retailer would not get away with this in the US, the media would be all over and camped outside, by the time they get done with them the line of complaints would lead to a class action law suit. Because it’s a woman from Layou, if the customer came from Morne Daniel or St Aroment I guarantee the outcome would be a million times different. She should SUE!

      May 10, 2012

I totally agree with you. this is nonsence. how can u say the woman intentionally put glass in the ketchup? really? there are some things that are intentional and makes sense, but think about it..what would she have gained from that? not a damn thing, and she still isnt gaining anything, if she or her child had consumed that piece of glass that would be another story for DNO and we wouldnt even know it was the ketchup. this needs to be taken care of.

Astaphan, PLEASE RECALL ALL MP KETCHUP!!!!

  14. Irie
    May 10, 2012

Whilst it is not astaphan’s fault that there was glass in the ketchup, it is their responsibility to relay such complaints to the manufacturer. Who knows, there might be other bottles contaminated with glass.

I have a problem with customer service at some businesses in Dominica, they do not take the customer seriously at all. It is about time that retailers in Dominica treat their consumers with respect. I am disappointed with the astaphan’s response to the complaint. In other countries, an incident like that is enough to cause an ivestigation of these products and a recall if more affected products are found. Perhaps the bureau of standards should get involved and order some testing of random bottles of MP ketchup from the retailer.

    May 10, 2012

The comments under this are very entertaining. It’s laughable how persons are quick to immediately claim they going to boycott this and stop using that. The very same people who….you know what.

Check that…the lady met the piece of glass when the ketchup was almost done in the bottle. This means this bottle had been un-sealed already and left in her home.

Questions that may arise: Are there any persons who have access to her kitchen who may have done that?

Is she aware of anyone in her neighborhood who may want to get rid of or harm her?

But nah, no one asking questions, no time to analyze, just jump on MP and Astaphan back. I find it highly impossible and strange for a piece of glass to be in ketchup as a manufacturing error. Something wrong somewhere.

But hey….Dominicans again I guess?

    • ....
      May 10, 2012

Entertaining because you in your warped analysis decide the possibility of the incident happening as stated is so impossible because it had to be done by someone in her home or just a plain lie? You sound so idiotic and uniformed it would be pitiful to laugh at you. If she had a big last name you wouldn’t be so non-chalant about it. If you saw it on the news from the US you would stay wherever you are and be the largest mouthpiece on the ills of the situation, but is a woman from Layou so who gives a damn she made it up, or her neighbour and or household did it. Dominicans are so twisted

It takes money to sue and suing a big corporation is not easy. There generally is a settlement if someone was hurt. Finding things that don’t belong in food products does happen. You never really know how it got there. There is a limit on how many rat hairs a candy bar can contain in the states.

  22. May 9, 2012

Once the bottle was opened and used, there is nothing that can come of that report. There is no evidence to prove that the broken glass was sealed with the contents of the bottle.

I went to a store and bought a DVD by mistake–because I already had that DVD at home. I simply noticed it was the same one when I put the first disc in the player.

I quickly took it off, wrapped it back and took it to the store with my bill, and the other DVD which I already had like it. Because the plastic–the outside wrapping of the DVD–was broken, customer service claimed that it was opened so they would not take it back.

I simply wanted to exchange it for the one which I actually meant to buy, I did not want money back–but no mercy no compassion. Now I have two DVD’s of the same kind.

So we need to be careful when we are buying–the merchants will show us no mercy–in the case of the Ketchup bottle this complaint belongs against the the factory–but how can she prove it?

Some years ago a man drank up his beer to the bottom, when he saw a dead mouse in the bottle. I cannot understand why the beer did not taste different in his mouth. It is said that the man almost threw up his stomach, but I do not remember the outcome of that situation.

We, the consummers–especially when we are buying food merchandise–we simply have to be careful and ask for God’s guidance and protection. What else is there for us to do?

    • Anne Marie
      May 10, 2012

is the second time she is using the same bottle of ketchup. is NOT twice she buy that is happened.

she bought the ketchup, using it once did not see or hear anything but on her secound use of the same bottle of ketchup, while pouring that’s when she heard the noise ndwhen she check it, saw the broken glass.

the company which imported the ketchup should compensate the lady.

if someone at her home had injest this piece glass, what would be the outcome?

Only in Dominica some of us are NOT concern about others. As long as we get our money that’s it.

Astaphan should contact their suppliers of the ketchup and both Astaphan and the ketchup supplier should agree on compensating the lady.

This is TYPICAL service in Dominica. No one listens to the Consumers. The Agent instead of following up hoping that a situation lke this does not occur again or to help motivate their customers to share complains/concerns thats the typical reaction “No comment” I go to DA on Vacation and it is disheartening that Services to Consumers have not reached any level than what it has always been “Consumers seem to be the ones doing the Buisness Places a Favor”

    • Me
      May 10, 2012

These are the sort of issues that separate the ‘men from the boys”. And that’s where I give the companies owned by the ‘Ns” their props. You would never get that kind of response from any of their businesses.

All Astaphan had to do was apologise, offer the lady a response and take it up with MP.

I can imagine the response she got.

  31. CANDID
    May 9, 2012

I think that the lady’s suggestion is a reasonable one. If the ketchup was packaged in a plastic bottle this would minimize the changes of broken bottles at the factory.

  32. FED UP DOMINICAN
    May 9, 2012

Plastic bottles is not the answer. You could still find broken glass in a platic bottle.

This sounds like a fault whilst bottling the ketchup. All sorts of things have been found in jars/bottles/packages.

Astaphans should report this to the manufactures and they should investigate and compensate the lady.

Where the customer service? All the lady wanted was for Astaphans to give her $50-100 worth of free groceries wii. That would have satisfied her and DNO wouldn’t get any story and whole Dominica wouldn’t be thinking of boycotting MP ketchup at Astaphans.
So little could have avoided such an embarrassment. smh.
