Bus stops near West Bridge temporarily relocated

The West Bridge will be demolished and reconstructed as part of the project

Bus stops in the vicinity of the West Bridge, leading out of Roseau, have been temporarily relocated to facilitate the ground-breaking ceremony for the new West Bridge.

The venture stems from a contract for over US$6.5-million between the Dominican government and NSG Management and Technical Services Limited of Barbados, signed on Wednesday, April13, 2016, covering the demolition and reconstruction of the bridge.

According to Head of the Traffic Department, Assistant Superintendent Matthew Cuffy, the Mahaut, St. Joseph, and Fond Cole bus stops were relocated.

“The Mahaut, St. Joseph, Fond Cole, and Goodwill bus stop, we have relocated them in various areas, in close proximity of where they were. We have moved Mahaut to Great George Street, and that is after the intersection of Kennedy Avenue and Great George Street. They will occupy this area up to the intersection of River Street and Great George Street. And, that will be on the western side of the road,” he explained during a live interview on state-owned DBS Radio. “And those from St. Joseph will occupy River Street—that is below the Canefield bus stop. St. Joseph buses will occupy the northern side of the road. They will turn right, into King’s Lane, to River Bank, and exit on the West Bridge. The Fond Cole buses will occupy Bay Town. That’s the bus stop that has been sitting there for a while. We have since moved them to that area, and the Goodwill buses will occupy the eastern side of Steeber Street, that is, opposite the Stockfarm bus stop.”

This system, he stated, is expected to last for two days.

Cuffy thanked the bus drivers for their cooperation, particularly with the recent introduction of the Community Policing Action Plan, geared at creating greater relations between the police and the public.

“I must take the opportunity, on behalf of the chief, to really thank the bus drivers for working with us, because… we are on the drive of promoting our committee policing initiative, so we are very pleased as to the responses we got from the bus drivers,” he said.

The works will also include the reconstruction of retaining walls and drainage works between the West Bridge and the E.C. Loblack Bridge, as well as dredging the Roseau River between the Dominica China Friendship Bridge and the E.C. Loblack Bridge.

Correct me if I’m wrong but based on the model presented it looks like a two way road…. is that how its going to be seeing that Great George St. is one way? Guess traffic will have lots of signs to put up…

Honestly ….. Barbados and give our people a job instead. All Skerrit wants to do is to buy people’s soul with another siro. That is a big insult. Who he thinks he is, Nero?

Was there a bidding process? I find it insultive and wicked that a Barbados company is going to construct a bridge that locals can construct….Remember for election 2014, a large chunk of DLP paraphernalia was done in Barbados..One has to ask why. This lazy government takes pride in seeing Dominicans unemployed…A GANG OF EVIL and WICKED men and women I call them.

Would be interesting to compare how much it cost to build the NEW WEST BRIDGE close to the market, which was done by the Chinese.

The height of the bridge should be raised and the river bed under the bridge should be dredged. It might be an idea to dredge under the bridges before each hurricane season or hurricane.

        April 22, 2016

yes AAGabriel…with that line of thought I guess we all should have stayed in wooden houses or still been slaves…just because something exissts doesnt make it the right thing….just becasue we walking on roads now doesnt mean that we should KEEP walking on roads…have you ever heard of IMPROVEMENT… Maybe you should go improve your silly attitude… on a bridge with TWO lane traffic you would want dominicans to be walking on the vehicular area…are you crazy? I shudder to think that there are brains like yours floating around in people’s heads

In an effort to reduce light pollution and obtain maximum coverage (visibility) on the bridge the pole lights should be shining down instead of a 360 deg illumination. Just a thinking.

Over 1,200 Dominicans are employed under the NEP (Not Educated People), yet the government of Dominica is creating real employment for 15,000 Bajans, at $1200 a month, with that $18 million dollar project. So at the end of the day guess who is the fool? DOM-In-I-CANS nou. To keep us quite Skerrit decided to throw us a sewo, because as far as he is concerned that’s all we care about and that’s all we worth. Gason nou sort wee

model photo should have been the real end product not a snap shot from heaven knows where.

  18. April 21, 2016

Perhaps we should take the artist’s rendition with a pinch of the proverbial salt.

Unless there is a major Roseau master-plan that I am unaware of, it beggars belief as to the fate of south-bound traffic after crossing the bridge. But then again, approaches to the Chinese bridge are equally moot.

Skerrit giving Dominicans party to blind them, but sends Dominica money to Barbados. When they finish party they will have no money to pay their bill but Bajans will have enough money to develop Barbados.

If Barbados was as poor as Skerrit got Dominica, and the Barbados government had given such lucrative contract to a Dominican firm, while the government treated the people with a weekend fete, knowing Bajans, their would be a massive protest tomorrow.

  21. Doctor of Corruption
    April 21, 2016

Things are bad in Dominica. The people are broke, hopeless, as companies continue to close down and people are sent home. Skerrit knows that 90% of his supporters are blind, poor and stupid so to keep them in utter darkness all he has to do is find a way to give them a FREE fete so they get drunk and forget about their misery. Skerrit has surrounded himself with corrupt spiritual leaders that must have explained this passage to him; “Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. 7Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.” Pr. 31::6-7

But make no mistake about that, Dominicans should prepare to vote sometime this year because everything points to a snap election especially now UWP is fighting among themselves ……………….

Very impressive artist impression. It is like building a mansion close to the labass. No sooner you get out of the mansion , you run right into the dumping of rubbish. Beautiful bridge, no sooner you leave the bridge, the streets and old houses of Roseau kills the beauty.

With the tens of thousands of Dominicans working overseas, we cannot always complain when a non-Dominican has a contract to do work in Dominica God why everything is always such a problem with us? I am sure the government has a perfectly good reason for choosing that specific company.

I agree with you that the artist impression looks very good and I am sure the bridge will look great when completed and we will all be happy driving on it. Give thanks.

“With the tens of thousands of Dominicans working overseas”. I agree with you on those words but remember they are not paid by the governments of those countries. These bajans are hired and paid by our government, our people’s money. I do hope that at least they hire some local people to work with them. Hoping they build a very strong bridge knowing what happens in rainy and hurricane season. I think the bridge should be elevated more.

I haven’t read a comment that appreciate Barbados the great response they did during TS Erika they treated us like brothers and sisters and to stay where you are to write negative comments toward Barbabos you guys are so ungrateful,I am a strong critic of this goverment but i believe he has a good reason he gave this Barjan company this project.

I just think that it should be a double lane going out of town, this would help ease traffic so those going goodwill or hospital will take one lane and those getting out of town use the other lane.

    • nonamegal

Agreed. In these times you have to build for the future. Double lanes would have been better.

I must say that the bridge in the picture below looks really nice but then again a computer model can make anything look good on paper. Let’s find out how this one plays out. It’s a shame that the hungry jobless locals will be gathering close by to witness the Bajans construct a project that they should have been given. Shame on you Skeritt.
