Canada warns against traveling to several Caribbean islands

Photo shows that Dominica has been bouncing back since Hurricane Maria

It has been months since Hurricanes Irma and Maria devastated parts of the Caribbean but the Canadian government is warning its citizens against non-essential travel to several islands including Dominica.

Other islands on the list are the British Virgin Islands, Saint-Barthélemy, Sint Maarten and Saint Martin.

The Canadian government is warning its citizens that Dominica suffered significant damage from Hurricane Maria. It said transportation routes, power and telecommunications systems have been affected throughout the island as well as emergency and medical care, and water and food supplies.

For the British Virgin Islands, travelers are warned that both hurricanes caused severe damage to building and infrastructure. It said transportation routes, power and telecommunication systems have been damaged and destroyed. It also said in some areas emergency and medical care, water, and food delivery have been severely affected.

The Canadian government also said buildings, infrastructure and transportation routes have been affected in Saint-Barthélemy, Sint Maarten and Saint Martin.

Dominica is open for industry and infrastructural business all of you are close minded about the open for business aspect. Dominica is still home for me and I thank the government for doing their best to make thing better even we suffered soo much. No one told us us to build our homes short cut so don’t crucify the Government for your mistakes and Mal housing management.

My wife and I are looking forward to our Dominica vacation in March. We know that your country faces a long rebuilding period, but we expect to have a good time regardless. Best wishes to all from California!

Canada is a trusted friend of the Caribbean, they have proven that time and time again. I don’t think they would deliberately try to sabotage any of their friendly governments of the Caribbean. This is routine for them. They issue travel advisories whenever they have evidence that their citizens might have severe difficulties in any foreign destination. Dominica must get its infrastructure, especially roads, bridges, electricity and water rectified. Let’s all be reasonable. Would you like to visit a country where evidence of devastation is ubiquitous?

So the “after” photo is supposed to represent the present condition of Dominica? Do not forget there are several roads and bridges that are in suspect condition.

I am a Dominican and I live in North America. I will not visit Dominica until the place is in better condition. My wife and I will soon be taking a well needed vacation but we are headed to Barbados for a couple of weeks. Why would I want to put up with that hassle on a vacation?

I have been to St. Maarten 3 times, Tortola twice and I love both islands, but they too are off my list of places to visit.

No one will miss your miserable, broke self. Dominica will build back with or without you. Natural disasters occur anywhere and you don’t expect things to get back to normal overnight.

You have the right to say what you want and I support you having that right. What I said stands. I do not have to subject myself to any kind of hardship particularly if I am on vacation.

If you want to spend time in Dominica, by all means go ahead. I am not doing it at this stage in the recovery.

And that thing about being broke? Did you not read I was heading to Barbados for a couple of weeks? I don’t spend money I do not have.

Zandoli thank you. You don’t have to pass back in Dominica. If you not with us when we down, don’t come when we up either. Look at how you thinking and you from Dominica. When America finish with all you, don’t run here. You probably not going nowhere. Stay in the projects you poor soul.

Dominica is close to my heart, but I am open to living anywhere that suits me. I am not limiting myself to Dominica, so you don’t need to worry about where I end up. My wife and I have had many long discussions about that and we are both willing to move around based on our whim.

To purport that you are Dominican and then turn around and selectively deny yourself active participation in the country’s recovery is setting yourself up for a barrage of insults. Sometimes it’s best to keep quiet even when you have the right to your own opinion.
Dominica has it’s work to do and visitor expenditure will contribute to that recovery. Last week I visited the Nature Isle for one week, spent approx. XCD$6000. Still beautiful as the trees are recovering, and much effort has been put in clearing the main roads . Things are not back to normal, but with every dollar spent in Dominica, things will improve.

Hope you don’t get a bout of gastroenteritis or something worse from all that raw sewage flowing freely on the popular south coast of Barbados. The place stinks. The Canadian government published a travel advisory because of that… google it. Nowhere is perfect….

Your name suits you. You act like there are not deficiencies in North America. Let me remind you of New Orleans in 2005. I’m a Trinidadian who live in North America and I’m look forward very much to visiting Dominica one day soon.

@zandoli …Oh please…. just ignore my response to your idiotic statement. If my mother’s house is broken , I certainly will not go around saying that I won’t go there because of the situation it is in. I would sit myself down and think of a way to help build it back. Nobody brags during hard times. Only fools do such. Go to Barbados and spend your hard earned cash…you will be blessed

I think it’s each Government’s responsibility to care and advise its Citizens, respect to Canada’s prerogative. Our business however, is to take responsibility and make our islands host worthy and continue to promote the best we have to offer. Visitors will trickle back surely.

  7. January 9, 2018

Only people living in a fools paradise would believe that after the devastation caused by Maria, Dominica would be anything close to conditions before Maria after 3 months. Progress is ongoing we all hope things could be faster. What’s wrong in saying that Dominica is open for business is that not a fact, definitely not at the level before Maria.

Why do we as a people insist on bad mouthing the present day government? They are trying their utmost best. They will never please everyone. You are Dominican first and then what ever political affiliates after, in the best interest of you country especially in time like these you must band together for the betterment of your country.

Interesting ……While we have The Tourism Organization under Colin Piper doing the irresponsible thing by marketing the country as ready for tourism in Canada when it is not.

In return the Canadian GOVT is providing accountable and responsible actions by protecting its citizens.

  10. Paul Rossnof
    January 9, 2018

Oh, I thought the Ministry for tourism and Mr. Piper shouted some weeks ago ‘Dominica is open for business again’. Well, well the same old story with this useless government all the time, lies, lies and more lies.

Saint Maarten and Saint Martin are one and the same island.

    • Ki - ZERBO
      January 10, 2018

Yes, they make up ONE island but there are TWO separate countries. The island of Hispanolia presents a similar scenario: The Dominican Republic and the Republic of Haiti. So why did you make the statement??

      ABRIGADO!

I am expecting the Dominica Government to issue a statement on this ,both locally & in Canada

    • hedi
      January 9, 2018

What is your point? Why should the government comment locally and in Canada. What will they tell you that you do not already know? You should google your question there are images that patiently await you.

    • Paul Rossnof

What kind of statement??? Telling the Canadian government that they are wrong??? Telling them that ‘Dominica is open for business’? Don’t make me laugh.

That is very correct people do not act surprise. the roads are hazardous and poses grave danger to all. are you guys blind. cant you see that Dominica roads are accidents ready to happen. wake up Dominicans from you all slumber. the administration of our country is corrupt, lacking foresight and malicious in every sense of the word.

Disappointed with Canada. I thought they were more open-minded and positive than that. Even more disappointed with the increasingly abysmal DDA for not dealing with this.

    • Paul Rossnof
      January 9, 2018

They are very open minded indeed. But they don’t have time for crap, corruption and false propaganda. They have a duty to their citizens to inform them of these things. Or do you suggest they lied? Here you see the difference between a proper, competent and trustworthy government that is there to serve it’s citizens as opposed to that Punch and Judy show which calls itself the government of Dominica.

  15. ArayofLight
    January 9, 2018

so DNO why aren’t you allowing the Government to address that issue??why are you being the vocal cord for this debate??? there must be some rational as to why this has surfaced now, St. Marteen is doing exceptional well with it’s marketing and tourism sector to the point that ‘Love and Hiphop’ casting crew did a segment on that island as recent as November 2017 and that is just to outline just one…something is amiss here
