CariMan adds voice to gay debate

Thomas Holmes

Another organization in Dominica has added its voice to the ongoing gay rights discussion which is raging on the island.

Caribbean Male Acton Network (CariMan) Dominica Chapter Inc has declared that it will not support Minority Right Dominica’s (MiriDom) calls to revisit the laws on buggery presently on the books.

President of CariMan Thomas Holmes said the organisation cannot condone nor promote the ideals, mandate, or work plan of any particular group.

Holmes admitted that although he is unaware of what exactly the group is asking for CariMan is not prepared to support them in any move to change the island’s buggery laws.

“If we know that any group including MiriDom is involved in any sort of activity that may be contrary to the law of the land, then we cannot condone that,” he said at a press conference on Monday.

Holmes noted further that the buggery laws are part of the island’s laws and CariMan is not in a position to speak on behalf of MiriDom on that matter.

“We cannot go on behalf of MiriDom and say remove it or say let them be who they want to be because it is on our laws,” he said. “And we all heard what the Prime Minister said, which is it cannot be repealed at this moment.”

He said CariMan’s stance is “respect everyone” and and it will not support anyone who use violence against the group. “But we cannot support their mandate, their ideals or what they may be asking for,” he said.

Minority rights? What is that group talking about when clearly they spell out their mandate to change anti-buggery laws to make it easy for gay men to come out. Are they going to also fight for rights of hunters which is a minority group. Well we have our laws to help protect crapaud, manicou, etc. just like this law helps protect out health system.

Not just because some men choose to partake in nastiness among themselves that we are to change our essential laws, they are there for a purpose no matter how this group tries to influence politicians. We will stand up against them and their nastiness, but protect them from violence and harm as citizens.

I cannot believe with all the other atrocities going on in Dominica the main focus is on Gay people. What about the men who are raping their own Kids or abusing them, outright prostitution…Oh wait its not a sin, its not in the bible. I am an openly Gay man and at the moment I am happily leaving in a country that will accept me for who I am. I don’t have to worry that if I get beaten in Dominica by homophobes then it will not be swept under the carpet as I don’t think Gay bashing will be a concern of the Authorities on the Island. Wake up Dominica.

Hello. If you are assaulted in Dominica then the Police will investigate your case and I hope they will arrest and sucessfully prosecute the perpetrator . We are a Democratic country and we rule by Laws. Anyway I hope you won’t be the victim of any crime if you visit Dominica.

I have never been in Dominica. My opinion of the country is based upon what I read in DNO. It appears Dominica has a good police force with officers who are committed to justice.

I don’t hesitate to say that the police would go after anybody who committed the serious crimes you have mentioned in your comments. If you – a gay man – visited Dominica you would be subject to the same laws anybody else is subject to. On the other hand if you were attacted or “bashed” I would expect the police to deal quickly with your abusers.

Just for the record some “gay bashers” are men who are struggling with their own latent homosexuality. Studies have shown that percentage wise there is more domestic violence among gay couples who live together than among straight couples.

Our governments do have the right to make laws that govern sexual behavior. Otherwise we would have no laws against incest, rape, or beastility.

We are to obey these laws. (Romans 13:1-4)

In a land with a Christian heritage and a significant number of professing believers in Jesus Christ the citizen have a right to expect laws that protect Christian marriage (Matthew 19:4-6) and laws against sexual behavior the Bible forbids. (Romans 1:26,27) (1 Corinthians 6:9,10,) (1 Timothy 1:9,10) (Jude vs.7)

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangeist.

    Mr Holmes.

Hello Mr Holmes. How can you comment on another group when you don’t even know the facts. Also you said your group respect everyone’s rights therefore how can you deny MiriDom their basic Civil Rights. I am not gay but I do support minority rights because one never know when the authorities will try to deny us some other right .

The definition of Homophobia in the dictionary is an irrational fair of homosexuals or homosexuality.
This statement made by Homes on behalf of his group reeks of exactly that. Homophobia. Is Cariman a homophobic group? their justification is irrational.

I am so sick and tired of people talking about the bible says to love. I see it as a means of excuse to support the gay movement. Yes the bible says to love one another and we should but aren’t we forgetting that this same bible talks about sexually immorality as a sin. I do not hate homosexuals, but I am against homosexuality. You fight for your rights to be accepted, what about my right as a christian person who oppose it. My appeal to those who are engaged in such sinful acts to look within yourselves, recognise the errors of your ways and repent while you have the chance.

 Let go and let God have his wonderful way. God created all and He gave his commandments. I do not know if he created humans gay or not. In the end he will judge. I hate the idea of a male man pushing some body part into another male part. I cannot answer for God. When I read of the punishment reserved for these particular ones I ponder as to whether they understand the ramifications of their actions.I have to look for myself but I remember that God destroyed a whole city for the sake of this. Why was Lot and his family the only ones spared? I guess others said it wasn’t their business what was going on then. I don’t want to be destroyed because of other peoples selfishness hence the adding of my two cents.

    The other is preaching,
    “You cannot legislate morality,”
Of course they know this is a myth, every society, civilization under on earth had or has a code of conduct. In Dominica it is immoral and illegal to walk naked in public, also used indecent language. In the U.S. people under 20 or 21 cannot buy alcohol.
The only human right they know is 4 man to bogger man.Why they don;t fight for Rasta to smoke their grass, fight for Government to allow people a to consume any drugs they want.? Yet the same sodomites are saying what about fornication and adultery why not asked the government to make it illegal?
It is natural 4 the sun to appear every morning in the east and disappears in the west,You stand on a two story house and jump, you must go down, not up.
It is natural for a married man to want to have sex with another woman.Same thing with the unmarried, even though they have this feeling that does not makes it right before God the creator if they yield to their feelings. But homosexuality is different.God said in His words (I know you cannot stand the bible,so what? )this life is unclean,it is dishonouring to the body,it is vile passions,it is not natural,it is against nature and it is an error..
Oh friends come to Jesus now.Remember Sodom and Gomorrah.

    • June 4, 2013

J.J. John-Charles: The Sodomites find your blend common sense and logic totally unacceptable. The saying “We cannot legislate morality” is true in the sense that we cannot by legislation make the hearts of people moral. Laws forbidding certain types of immorality will never entirely eliminate such behaviour. But the laws do reduce the commission of such deeds and make it possible to contain the problems when these laws are being enforced. Civilized nations have always had laws forbidding certain activities. This is what separates us from the jungle! God has given to human governments the delegated authoriy to rule over us. Christians are to obey the human authorities as long as the civil laws do not compel us to disobey the Word of God. Romans 3:1-4. It is reasonable that nations have laws that reflect the the will of God for something as vital as human sexuality and marriage which is the cornerstone of society. Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

I have always told you religion can do strange things to the mind of man.Why don’t you look up the meaning of the word morality.Who gave you authority to decide what is right for god.It is not about coming to Jesus,It is about removing the veil of ignorance, it is about getting your self out from a cage or prison you have locked your self in.What a creepy mind you have telling people to remember Sodom and Gomorrah, very sad indeed.

      • July 10, 2014

Sorry Garry, but ignorance is when people do not know what God has said.

The worst of them are those who do not want to know.

There is a veil over their minds. To compensate they create their own belief systems. In the absence of a Divinely given code they make their own rules. This is where the cults come from, and the many conflicting philosophies of the new age movement. It is the road that many chose who are now tapped in alcoholism, drug abuse, and sexual perversion. They thought it led to freedom. But instead it was a slippery slope to the pit.

A man on the journey of life without the guidance of the Word of God is like a traveler with no map nor compass. Many lose their way and end up where they do not want to be. Without the guidance that comes from above they either depend on their own guesswork, or they take advice from others who know less than they do.

No , the Bible is not confusing me. it has given me a good life with my share of success because I have made it a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.

the sole reason for a civil law can’t be based on religious principles. there must be a separation between church and state.

This is a critic factor that is being ignored in Dominica. its discrimination.

    • June 4, 2013

The original purpose of separation of church and state was to prevent the state from forcing a particular religion on the people. It guaranteed that the government would not restrict the practice of religion and people could follow the church of their choice. Separation of church and state does not mean that church leaders – pastors and bishops – cannot respectfully advise prime ministers, presidents, and even royality regarding laws that relate to human behaviour and morality when the Word of God addresses the issues. Separation of church and state certainly does NOT mean that civil authorities cannot govern in a manner that is pleasing to God by legislation that honors His commandments. In a democratic nation Christians have a right and responsibilty to vote for those political candidates they have reason to believe will do this. Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. Pentecostal Evangelist.

It’s an abomination, thus said The Lord.

    • June 4, 2013

It is true God alone is he judge. He is also the lawgiver! He has said homosexuality is a sin according to Romans 1:21-32, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 1 Timothy 1:9-10, and Jude vs.7. A police officer is not judging when he tells somebody something is against the law. A lawyer not judging when he quote the law and explains it to a client. So you see One Stone, as Christians we are not judging when we tell people that God says in His Word that homosexuality is a sin.

Those who want to impose their odd life style on the 99.9 per cent of Dominicans. Are demanding that the government changed the laws to suit them, so that they can have their right which was taken from them.
They are comparing themselves with the slave in days of yore, but are very selective. They only pick on slavery in the U.S.A.but ignored the other countries who had slaves over 4000 yrs before the U.S.I think originally the constitution said something like, blacks were not fully human.
Those of us who believed that this behavior is contrary to human nature, are called homophobic, intolerant, bigot, hater. We are even asked to “Embraced the providence of a Living God,we ought to build a more, not less, inclusive society. We are ask to stop using Christianity as an excuse to discriminate and chastise homosexuals.
It is OK 4 them to invoke the name of the LIVING GOD, in order to support their practise. But those of us who LOVE this same LIVING GOD should not use His words.

In closing, let me remind my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.Remember Noah was laughed at, was called intolerant, hypocrite and told him u must be inclusive because not every one believes in your God.But what the bible say?

God saved NOAH a preacher of righteous, and brought a flood of water and destroyed the ungodly. He (God) also delivered Lot and turned not only the people but the cities Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes 2 Peter 2:5-9

HEY GUYS AND GALS LET ME SEE YOU REMOVE THESE FROM THE BOOKS ………………. Leviticus 18:22 – Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it [is] abomination

Romans 1:24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.

I am a Muslim and we have the worst punishment in the world if someone is found guilty in an Islamic court of law for homosexuality.

With this said, it is very sad the manner in which the discussion on the issue of homosexuality is held. The narrow dogmatic bible thumping is the most retarded position to take, the bible is not the word of God and the longer Dominicans stop using this book it will be better for them. They are just making their priests and pastors rich with tithes and offerings. Dominicans must understand that Christianity cannot agree on the cannon of their bible. Some bibles have 66, 73, 88, 100+ books, this is clear evidence which proves that the bible has been tampered with.

Homosexuality needs to be discussed by examining the scientific, economical, social-psychological, health and other implications of homosexuality on human life and whether it can be treated through cognitive and behavioral therapy or is it a genetic issue.

Dominicans must understand that many of them do not believe in their scriptures. They need to stop the hypocrisy because their own books say they must not fornicate, commit adultery, practice witchcraft, dabble in usury/interest and the list goes on yet these crimes go unpunished in this country. The hypocrisy is nauseating in this country and I am tired of it.

In conclusion I believe that homosexuality is a moral wrong, it can be curbed and since homosexuals say sexuality is fluid thus one can repent and change. Yet, a homosexual must not be abused or molested in any way but as a human being he/she must have access to the basic necessities of life.

You need to get your facts right, firstly Abraham peace be upon him was not a Jew or a Christian. How could he be a Jew or a Christian when the Torah and the Gospels were revealed after him? Have you sense? Nay, Abraham (p) was a Hanif, an upright Muslim and monotheist – so were all the prophets and messengers of Allah including Jesus Christ (p). Christianity began with Paul, or could you kindly show me where Jesus (p) said he is a Christian if you speak the truth.

Yes prophet Muhammad performed Miracles, firstly, the Holy Qur’an is a miracle, secondly, he split the moon in half, healed a blind man, fed a multitude of people with milk and many more. The Holy Qur’an is its highly esteemed Arabic language is a miracle.

The Holy Qur’an did not take anything from the bible. For sure you spoke like this because you have not done any studies about Islam. You are simply speaking without knowledge.

http://www.islamreligion.com, May Allah guide you to the truth. Ameen.

      • June 4, 2013

Mario: Thank you for your brief comments. Jesus said a tree is known by the fruit it bears. In Christianity we see some individual Christans who have done bad things. But these things are the results of personal failures not the fault of Christianity. When we examine the tree called Islam we find bad fruit. Honor killings! Female circumcision! Suicide bombings! Members of one Muslim sect killng members of another Muslim sect! Muslims killing Christian missionaries because they shared the good news of Christ with Muslims! Muslims killing former Muslims because they converted to Christianiy! Muslim soldiers raping and slaughtering women in the streets and killing their children! 9-11! The only answer to this march of evil is the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ! He said He was the only way of salvation. Yes, any religious leader could say that. But this man actually prophesied his own death and said He would rise again the third day. On the morning of the third day when He stepped out of that tomb He validated all His claims including the claim that He is the only way to heaven! I invite you to visit my website http://www.livinghopeministries.ca and go to SERMONS. Click onto my sermon MANY INFALLLIBLE PROOFS. @ Rev. Donald Hilla: You need to stop your hatred of Islam from western propaganda. Why not do an independent research about Islam? Do you have a copy of the Holy Qur’an? Have you read and understand it? What is the purpose of life?

It is 2013 not 1313 get with it discrimination is wrong and stupid. Governments have no place in people’s bedrooms. Homophobia is no different than racism STUPID AND BACKWARD.

    • June 4, 2013

If governments have no place in the bedrooms of the nation then there can be no laws against ANYTHING people do in the bedroom! This confirms my thesis that once a person crosses the line into the world of same sex relationship they lose their moral compass. They do not want ANY laws governing human sexual behaviour. These people are painfully aware that they do no have the facts on their side so they will not allow themelves to be drawn into an objective debate where one side wins by the merits of logic. Instead they talk down to their opponents in a effort to intimidate them by misusing words comletely out of context. Notice how those who oppose homosexuality are called homophobic. A phobia is an irrational fear. A homophobic person is somebody who has an irrational fear of homosexuals. I have never met a person who feared homosexuals. What we do fear are the mental health issues, physical problems, and social discord created by homosexual practices. I encourage those who are not familar with these to read the book HOMOSEXUALTY AND THE POLITICS OF TRUTH by Dr.Jeffrey Satinover,M.D. Dr. Satinover has practiced psychiatry for over 20 years. DNP: “Holmes admitted that although he is unaware of what exactly the group is asking for CariMan is not prepared to support them in any move to change the island’s buggery laws.”

Lol! This must be the quote of the day. How do you oppose something of which you have no clue?

And later, DNO: “He said CariMan’s stance is ‘respect everyone’”. How do you respect a homosexual but you will not respect his/her right to openly and freely express love to his/her partner? Is this CariMan’s interpretation of “respect”, or is this only Holmes’ twisted mind at work?

      EyeBalls.

Hello. It’s not about how many Homosexuals that are in Dominica. It’s about a small part of our population fighting for their basic Civil Rights. I am Dominican and I reside in NYC and I will support any group fighting for their rights even if I don’t engage in their particular life style or choice of activity.

      • June 14, 2013

Tony: Homosexuals already have equal rights – the right to marry somebody of the opposite gender. This follows the God given model for marriage according to Matthew 19:4-6 and other sciptures. Marriage is not a product of our social evolution or something created by mankind for convenience. It was given by God (a) for procreation, (b) for the protection, nurture, and upbring of children, and (c) for the comfort and wellbeing of husdband and wife. Once a government makes even one exception to the Biblical model there will be other “minority” groups pushing for “equal rights” to have their particular relationships legalized and called marriages. If homosexuals as a “minortity group” have aright to be accomodated the so do men who want to have more than one wife, adults who want to marry minors, parents who want to marry adult children, brothers and sisters who want to marry each other, and those who want to practice beastility. God tells us homosexuality is a sin, along with other illict sexual practices. Roman 1:21-32, 1 Corinthians 6:9,1 Timothy 1:9,10, and Jude vs. 7. God has delegated to human goverments the authority to rule over us. Romans 13:1-4. They are responsible to give us laws that honor and protect the insitution of marriage as God intended it to be. Christians have a democratic right (and responsibility!) to vote for the political candidates who share our Biblical values. Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. We are a Democratic Country and we are rule by Laws. What the Gay Community is asking for is their basic Civil Rights. They aren’t asking for any of their members to go in public and engage in any lewd or criminal act.

That the CariMan spokesman admits to not knowing “what exactly the group is asking for” should tell us that Mr. Holmes is either ignorant or hypocritical or both. If you don’t know what you’re commenting about, why comment at all, if not to show your ignorance?

And if it is truly the case that CariMan does not “condone…activity that may be contrary to the law of the land,” then why do we not see the group condemning the violation of law by sundry persons all around Dominica daily?

As to the “ongoing gay rights discussion which is raging on the island,” Dominicans continue to revel in their ignorance and worse, intolerance. Fact is, as far as the Constitution goes, gay rights are already enshrined and protected under Chapter One – Protection of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms and its clauses.

Section One states clearly that no matter their race, creed, politics or sexual orientation, … “every person in Dominica is entitled to the fundamental rights and freedoms,” including the right to “life, liberty, security of the person … protection of law; freedom of conscience, of expression and of assembly and association,” among other significant protections.

Which amongst us can say that the forgoing rights aren’t inalienable to all, no matter who we are or where we stand in the march of time?

As long as in the enjoyment of those rights a person “does not prejudice the rights and freedoms of others [or] of the public interest.”

If we take all the rights in the Constitution and the protection thereof as the ultimate litmus test for living successfully in our commonwealth, and if there are laws in Dominica outlawing homosexual rights – in all their expressions – then it seems obviously indefensible that we are in violation of our very Constitutional principles.

It seems to me that guided by our Constitution, itself paying homage to and embracing the providence of a living God, we ought to build a more, not less, inclusive polity.

    • Oh My...
      June 3, 2013

The Section referred to does not speak to “sexual orientation” at all. The section states in part “…the fundamental rights and freedoms, that is to say, the right, whatever his race, place of origins, political opinions, colour, creed or sex…” “sex” in this context refers to the male or female gender. Please don not get it twisted or miss quote or misinterprete the letter or intent of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

      • June 5, 2013

        Oh My.

Hello. I will be the first to say that I don’t have a copy of Dominica Constitution and I never read it. Now you said the Constitution refer to Sex. I am quite sure it didn’t specifically say or describe sex as being between a Man and a Woman.

I am coming home in November and I will get a copy of our Constitution and our Penal Code.

But that is the point. If all you already have all them rights there under the Constitution, what more all you looking for?

All you already have legal protection; is pollution all you trying to spread.

Who wants to be going down the road and seeing two men hugging and sucking each other’s tongues and likewise for women? Would you want your children to see them things?

If anybody in Dominica uses violence against a gay person, the law intervenes, what other rights you guys want? It occurs to me all you want more right than the average Dominican?

Stay in all you closets man…

You are right. With more enlightenment and less religious fundamentalism people will earn the right to be different. Nowadays it is allowed and legal to be “different” in most of the western world but still forbidden in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Burundi, Kazakstan and Yemen. And of course Dominica.

The be all and end all of it all is, God has spoken and also through His disciples. Do you really want to seek truth and also know the truth? Recognize God; worship and pray to Him, obey His Ten Commandments and all what is contained in Holy Scriptures; perform acts of love, of charity, compassion and mercy and God will reveal His Truth to you. You will not receive it otherwise.
The Lord, the Creator of Heaven and Earth and Ruler who is the primary One who governs the world, the Giver of Life who holds the key to all things has spoken! His ordained Word should not be changed. In fact, cannot be changed or severed. It will remain as is until the end of time when all are called to their eternal judgment. Whoever initiates it being changed, tries to change it and legislate it woe to them. Obviously, it includes those who practice what is contrary to the Law of God, who oppose it, condone it and applauds it. I urge you to take note of this serious matter for your earthly and spiritual benefit and that of others.

It is true that people of charity show no mercy and people of mercy show no charity.

My only comfort is that we are evolving. Someday homosexuals will be as free as negroes who once supposedly were not human and had no souls; and the handicapped who were considered just a drain on society.

Now our eyes ae open to the great worth of these people. The time will come when homosexuals will be as free as heterosexuals.

Just carry yourselves with dignity and dont give your detactors the occasion to say that your morals are loose. You will be free.

Pertaining to your first sentence, you are totally wrong. They cannot condone what is wrong. They are praying that homosexuals come to their senses to cease their intrinsically evil lifestyle which does not benefit the nation or the world, repent, give God His dues and worship him in faith, truth and purity.
If any government grants them such a freedom that you state, it will be only mere words but not the freedom of God and woe to that government leader.
How can anyone go before God in sin? How can homosexuals go before God knowing that their relationship is between two people of the same sex? Does this make sense? You expect Our Lord Jesus Christ to smile at this and say, “Welcome. You have done well. Come ye blessed of My Father…” You are underestimating God and what He expects of everyone that they conform to His Most Holy Will.
Homosexuality goes against what God had in mind for the human race since the beginning of time, namely, relationship and marriage between one man and one woman. You and your contemporaries must cease deceiving yourself. Pray to God for discernment.
If any government grants them such a freedom that you state, it will be only mere words but not the freedom of God.

The fact that ‘buggery’ is even in the law books is something I am yet to fully comprehend. But this is nothing new, can’t say I am too surprised with this story. Reading the other posts I am trying my best to understand arguments from the other side as to why it is still ‘on the books’…and all I see is ‘it against my religion’. So what, not everyone follows your religion. Religious doctrine cannot and should not be used as a basis for secular law. Why are only some aspects of your religious doctrine used as a basis for secular law and not others? If buggery is against the law, I guess fornication and adultery should be prohibited by law too. These people are not seeking any ‘extra’ human rights-they are seeking basic human rights. Stop using Christianity as an excuse to discriminate and chastise other human beings.

Let me inform you. God is not tolerant of homosexual practices. He is only patient for now. If you live long enough, wait and see. It will be as Sodom and Gomorrah. Utilize your common sense if you have any.
Christianity descended from Our Lord Jesus Christ and He taught against sin. Read specifically the entire New Testament. DO you need any further explanation?

      • November 21, 2014

        Well said Justice and Truth.

        I totally agree with you.

Those who advocate for homosexuality have lied for years to keep their sins hidden so thy can be accepted in society. Lying has become part of their nature. They do it without thinking.

When they debate with us they do not present facts because they have none. They have neither scripture nor science on their side. So what do they do? They talk down to us. One man
says to me again and again – like a cracked record – things like (not his exact words) ” the Bible has messed your head up” or “Religion sure makes people crazy.” They resort to psychological warfare like name calling, or using words like “hate”, “discrimination”, and “homophobic”, which are totally out of context and misapplied.

When I quote the scriptures one particular man does not reply with an academic answer. Instead he mocks the Bible and says it has certainly messed my head up. The fact that I hold an earned doctorate in Biblical studies means nothing to him. We are not dealing with normal people. This is a sin that takes its toll on human beings: It affects the brain and whole nervous system. In the first century St. Paul wrote said those who practice this abomination receive “…in their own persons the due penalty of their error.” (Romans 1:27)

You are right. The New Testament is all we need. It is God’s moral code for mankind in this age. It forbids homosexuality.
