Collywood protests outside Marpin

Members of Collwood’s team, led by owner Junior Hart, protested outside Marpin on Monday.

Holding placards they say they have been ‘unfairly treated’ by the cable company.

“Marpin is not fair,” one of the placards read.

Another read, “Support local …anything made in Dominica is local… support us.”

Last week Collywood announced that it has ceased placing content on Marpin2k4 and said it will be moving to SAT TV.

“I believe now that Collywood will now have a proper home for all our future productions,” Hart said. “Dominica has a lot of untapped talent and we aim to nurture and package those unknown talents and market them abroad.”

Hart accused the cable company of being unfair to Collywood’s local producers and local artists “by charging for local home grown contents to be shown on Marpin.”

“We believe that Collywood Dominican programs can stand up beside any overseas imported program that Marpin pays for,” he said.

The protest is part of a campaign against Marpin in an effort to have it “change its thinking towards local programs.”

COLLYWOOD was full of nonsense! I mean they played a few good movies like Roots (though i didn’t appreciate it on New Year’s day) but otherwise most of their programme was of an extremely low standard! Lewd behaviour, crude language, sexual scenes, even during the daytime! They barely had local stuff, more African stuff! And i noticed it promoted racism! I didn’t appreciate this at all! My people are generally open to all races and cultures and i reject anyone with intentions to turn us against other races. THey even promoted anti-semitism! Good riddance!

Collywood as far as I could see as a black person was educating people as far as the truth is concerned. How can it be racism talking about black history like Marcus Garvey, Malcome X, The Jewish race who ran the slave trade and who were the ones to capture and sell our African fore fathers into slavery..how can this be racism. We are still learning white people history in our schools, ask our children about black history such as Marcus Garvey and they will look at you with a blank expression. Ask them about Christopher Columbus and they will tell you about the history. You see white person coming on here saying that Collywood is preaching racism..who the hell are you to say that, when you lot are the racists…Collywood is bringing the truth and instead of bombarding the over saturated market with white faces, the channel was refreshinly Black..thats what I want to see. So say what yu all like. YOU LOT ARE THE RACIST NOT COLLYWOOD..THEY ARE JUST TELLING THE TRUTH. AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS??? LOOK DONT LET ME START. I have already signed up with SAT so I dont care.Marpin is finished.

Well well well all these comments just proves to me that we DOMINICANS don’t want anything better for DOMINICA. Mr. Hart at least is trying to show our talent and we are brining down collywood just because we are black and stupid. Yes the shows are not 100% quality or we may not have ppl who are trained to act and so on but in order to build a mantion we have to start with the foundation. so go on stupid people we will always be the backward country.

support nothing local that need to be change
in order for us to move forward. we support Africa we support Jamaica and we don’t support our self.

Marpin should give collywood the opportunity to promote local artists so we won’t have to go abroad for recognition like Nasio,Jeff Joseph ect.If Marpin give collywood this opportunity to to promote local artists we can stay right here and make it like the Chinese and Haitians come right here in Dominica and make it.Thank you bless up

I really hope that local artists work with Mr Hart, I know that some serious Dominican artists is going to break out of Dominica soon under the management of Mr Hart management. The negative people on here can carry on chopping their mouth off…thats just hot air as usual. I salute you Mr Hart on that demonstration sir. Well done.

People of Dominica, Junior Hart has been changing black entertainment for a long time..Dominica is not doing him no favors, in fact he is investing in Dominican talent. Please read this and you will see that Mr Hart is not new to breaking and starting new trends. since 1981.

I cant believe what I am seeing on this DNO site regarding Collywood. I am a reporter based in JA and I write for the Gleaner. Collywood is well respected in Jamaica. He has taken local film production to the next level. I had the pleasure to interview Mr Hart 2 years ago, he has made great strides around the Caribbean. I am seeing Dominicans making comments on this site, comments such as… Go back to Jamaica??? this is unreal. I can verify that Mr Hart/Collywood is for local production and I dont think all these negative attack is going to make him weak, he will only get stronger. Let us clear the air. For all the positive people on this site please see the following links about Collywood.

Mr Hart told me 3 years ago that he will be looking to start a film industry around the Cariibean starting off from Jamaica. Small minded Dominican should stop thinking that Mr Hart is a failure abroad, he went to the little Island of Dominica to build black people, not becuase he was kicked out of anywhere abroad, i find this very funny. Myself as a Jamaican will support and have supporting Collywood for sometime. Mr Hart has many interest in the music and film industry. He has his own Music Publishing company which is administered through the music publishing giant EMI Music, Dominicans may not of even heard of this major company. Mr Hart has a lucrative back catalogue which publishes many African music. This means he has the right to do what he wishes in order to promote the catalogue so it sells. Mr Hart is promoting African music becuase the videos you see play on Collywood belongs to his publishing company and he holds the rights. Now I dont want to lose the haters at this point..let me now give you the link to some of Mr Hart back catalogue of music
    http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?label=Renk+Records
He owns a record label called Renk Records and Renk Africa which is now just publishing. Mr Hart collects royalties from all over the world when one the music plays on radio and TV. I think this should clarify some of the point that the Haters on here have been spewing out. I think guys, Mr Hart is the one who will bring Dominican artists to the next level…becuase nobody in Dominica have the network or the orginazation internationally to make things happen. Have a great day Dominica.

Mr Jamaican reporter, you have the nerve to call Dominicans small minds because they not accepting sub standard stuff. We are small minded but we are NOT the murder capital of the world.

Why don’t you use your big mind and solve your murder problem or stop the slide of your Jamaican dollar.

Well Mr Andre Gordon JA reporter I have never heard of you and Collywood with all your international grand standing you are doing! First of make it the last time you insult Dominica and Dominicans! I live in the USA and I have never heard of you anbd your homeboy you want to shove down Dominicans throat! I’m highly offended that you have increased to the size of a blowfish to talk down to Dominicans. He came to the little island of Dominica to build black people, wah wrong wit u yardee? Man tap your brakes and come correct. If you want to inform people about his work this is not the way. He so big and important and he chose a little island according to you to come hide out? We don’t need him, Pirates of the Caribbean, Orchid house etc were filmed on that very island. We have rave reviews in pretigious global magazines and on their websites. We have been featured on international tv CNN BBC with no mention of you and collywood. Not even an original name he could amass, negro get lost!

Put your money where your mouth is…atleast Collywood is here and you are still over there. So negro you get lost! Just type in Collywood or Junior Hart and see what comes up. If I type your name..what will come up CNN, BBC???? big difference matey.

Something wrong somewhere with that whole Collywood nonsense. This man just insists on hyping up his crap, he is seriously deluded.

Everyone commenting about Dominicans not supporting local, I support local but I refuse to support this garbage. Tell me what so uplifting, or inspiring about his dramas. NOTHING!!!!

I am going around this site to all you Haters in Dominica and comment on everyone of your negative comments. I know what is happening in Dominica with Collywood. If you keep quiet like you have been doing and supporting local artist in your mind..why then is artists in Dominica cant break out and earn a decent living from their music. Yes you are certainly supporting them silently, right..well that dont help. To change a system you have to stand up and fight for your rights. Mr Hart is sweating, just like when Jesus came to help mankind they nailed him to a tree. Go on Dominica, this why Jamaica rule the music industry with reggea..where is Dominica in all this??? please tell as you are supporting local music. What rubbish these people do chat.

For this Nature Island, Collywood has been a great avenue to showcase local talent in a time when it is lacking adequate means. In addition it is also a significant tool to drive economic development by simply building on the strengths of the Island which is without a doubt, the arts. On the Nature island, the names Dice, Jeff Joseph, Midnight Groovers etc are all synonymous with the arts, creativity and success. Through the arts, Dominica has been put on the map so we must eliminate that deadly poison of stifling our local talent. It’s today that we must support our local talent and assist them in taking their careers to another level. That’s the goal which Collywood is trying to reach and it takes a coordinated effort. Marpin should understand what is at stake and examine the bigger picture. Why would Dominica want to throw in the towel when it comes to producing home grown talent? It should be a never ending venture and we should all look to progress together. I make an appeal to Marpin to forget about the competition with SAT and rethink its position on the whole situation. Think of us the young, upcoming talented, unfortunate individuals who have now got a chance to shine. Marpin STOP chasing a dime and losing a treasure. The treasure simply is home grown talent who will continue to put this small Caribbean country on the World map. We the fans are stepping up our campaign to save Collywood, more importantly to save the preservation of local talent. Local talent needs all the exposure that is possible and we need all hands on deck. Collywood is the best thing to happen to Dominica

We As Local Artiste Need Support And As Far As I Can See When Ent Getting From Marpin.
Cause I Went To Them To Air My Video And They Charged Me $800 To Play Once On their Channel … I Mean Come On If They Were Supporting The Vybz The Price Would Have Been Reasonable.
But You See Foreign Talent All Day Long On Their Channels . Why Cant That Be Us Dominica. We Can Do The Same Thing That Any Other Foreign Artiste Can Do, All We Need Is A Chance.

So many times we Dominicans call talking point on DBS and the hot seat on Q95 to complain about the utility companies and how we are being exploited by some company in Roseau and we never do anything about it. It is our DEMOCRATIC RIGHT to speak freely need to stand together to fight for what we want or else who will.I saw Mr Collywood and his group outside Marpin with his actors I presume. At least he could come out with the support of his team no matter how small to push their point forward…. But Dominicans are SCARD to come out to fight for what is RIGHT. Instead they choose to hide behind their phones or computers and send out messages to those talk shows about these companies. When will we wake up and realise that we are one people and should start working TOGETHER to build DOMINOICA.

1: The name Collywood is a ripoff from FOREIGN names like Hollywood and Bollywood. If you want to go LOCAL start with a local name like Braff or Tim-Tim.

2: You moved your business from Marpin and now you want to protest against Marpin. What exactly are you expect Marpin to do now?

3: A more practical approach would be to show your so called “quality talent” on SAT and watch the public response. If you are right, people would either move from Marpin to SAT, or pressure Marpin to show your stuff.

    February 25, 2013

Mr. Hart proclaims to walk the path of righteousness. Of course, T.V. channels should pay for content but not if the content provider claims the advertising revenue his content generates. A formula to satisfy both parties to such a contract can be negotiated or declined and that is Marpin’s right to do, even it it does not make sense to the prospective partner.
I do wonder if Collywood themselves pay the owners of rights to such epics as “Roots” and “Shaka Zulu” and others, which they have shown on channel 13. It would be extremely embarrassing to shout “unfair” if at the same time they were to engage in such practices, a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

Yes I can say thet have the rights to everything. I tried getting my material played on Collyywood and I had to see my lawyer to send over the rights. I commend them for that.

He could have simply taken his production to SAT in form of a silent protest and to add fuel to the fire the media is giving him more publicity LOL. Begs to question what now is the arrangement with SAT. Will they be paying Collywood to air its material?

  43. Irrational
    February 25, 2013

Junior Hart is being irrational. Why didn’t he seek an audience with management of Marpin before taking to the streets?

    • FENCE WATCHER
      February 26, 2013

IS THE MAN’S CHOICE TO TAKE TO THE STREETS!!! What is your problem with that? Don’t you think he would have thought of the consequences? Why are we scared of taking things to the streets? Now everybody knows about Collywood. That’s great publicity for his organization. I have SAT. I am waiting patiently for me to watch something local. Even if it is not the best, I am sure it will get better. I would just hope that I will see less ””less bad signal….. bad signal….. on SAT.
      SAT….. that is a marketing opportunity….TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT………….

You more wortless than Junior Hart. I wish 3 more would come from Jamaica….. 2 from Trinidad…… 2 from Barbados 4 from Guyana 3 from St. Lucia to come and get involved in 7 different areas in DA. What a difference it would be…………..

  45. I don't know
    February 25, 2013

this is the wrong approach, if collywood are that good, then Marpin would be desperate to keep them… you need to make yourself so good – that they’ll do anything to keep you! Put your effort into success not into squabbling!

Nothing tht is produced in Dominica is the best for Dominicans. Shame on Dominica.. we continuously prove to the outside world how small minded we are.. no forward movement us .. :-?

i think this is uncalled for. it could have been handled in a more civil manner.
we need to be huffing and puffing on the streets for things like rapists and murderers on the streets. not this. this can be settled elsewhere.
i have no interest in marpin, neither collywood.
i agree that marpin is not a charitable organisation and it to make a profit. i also dont like the fact that they pay to overseas channels and we the local ones have to pay them. i dont like the idea that a radio station has to pay for a graphic channel where marpin advertises. but all i am saying is that hart should not have been raising his pressure like this on the sidewalk. its uncalled for and they need to settle this like human beings and stop all that publicity.

one wish: i wish dominicans could demonstrate like that for the issues that really affect us on a daily basis.
why am i not taking the initiative you may say? well i am not an outspoken person, but if i have to hold a sign and represent, i will

You are confusing me. Did u say ” stop all that publicity ? Did you say you have “no interest in Marpin neither Collywood ? Did you say that “Mr Hart should not be raising his pressure on the side walk ? Did you say that you “wish Dominicans would demonstrate like that for other issues affecting us on a daily basis? I AM CONFUSED BY YOU. I HOPE YOU MEANT WELL. I DO.
I MUST CONCLUDE BY SAYING “MARPIN IS KILLING LOCAL”

but at the same time, if Marpin doesnt find a way to make money, and the quality of programming drops because it is an expensive industry, then everybody going to complain how Marpin is a rip off and Marpin this and that. Marpin better than SAT ka mem! SAT news just not ready yet.

Well … I must say that many get ignored.

See this one from 2 local guys Adil Karam (Roseau) and Trushatta (Clifden) that got 300,000 hits on Youtube and STILL nothing from DNO about it.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwGhr4T1AqA

At least mention it in passing if not getting behind it.

There are many more out there. Please help local talent.

You have contradicted yourself in your comment. If you have no interest in Collywood or Marpin why are you commenting?

You clearly have not understood the reason for this protest. Don’t you think they have tried to settle this in a civil manner. Life is not about sitting around and waiting for things to happen. We need to express our opinion. Dominica is a democratic country and the citizens have the right to speak. The protest today was not only a stepping stone for Collywood and Dominican artists. It will benefit the young people in Dominica that are still in education and would like to express themselves creatively by showcasing their talents. So please don’t chat your ‘foolishness’ about “its uncalled for.”

Also if you were interested in Mr Hart’s pressure you would of been out there protesting with him today! Peace and Love from UK xx

8-O ummm Collywood serious man? What local talent is Mr Hart referring to? Showing music videos of African artists and replacing the caption and putting “Junior Hart Production” is highly illegal and I am glad Marpin has disassociated itself with Collywood. One morning at 9:00am Collywood is showing a movie with sexual scenes. Is that the type of local talent he wants to showcase?

    • ya man
      February 25, 2013

I totally agree, so many african based music video, what local artists? and the woman with the poster that says we have talent…what talent, you all can’t stand next to cokes muchless for denzel washington -_-

        February 26, 2013

Aaah that is why we have no internationally reknowned artists/singers/actors.

People like YOU. Take a bow.

Support local talent no matter how far down on the starting scale they are. One day who knows.

      February 26, 2013

So P Square would never have been known here without them. No “Chop my Money”.

Look at that photo above. Those are local singers (I am one) protesting and we all want a chance to get heard. Marpin and many more media outlets can all say they support local talent but HOW? In what way in reality?

So now Marpin has said that they will play local videos … that is great and hats off to them. Thank you Marpin. So the protest helped.

More protest ppl. Make your voice heard. It works. I know.

      • HMMMM
        February 26, 2013

of course we would hv known p square…he is an international artist!!

      • Bluuuuhhh
        February 26, 2013

The point was that Africa has talent and we even know of them HERE. Yet you want YOUR own local talent to go unheard from some unfathomable vendetta against a guy who is really just wanting to make films and soaps.

Those that don’t like them … don’t watch.

Start being part of the solution. Tell us about a local talent right here and now that needs some help. The web is yours.

Otherwise go watch your dasheen grow.

Good lord. Are you saying that those musicians above have no brains at all and are just following orders from Herr Hart? Idiot.

Those are YOUR local singers / musicians and they want a little help to get exposure. This is a HARD thing to get in DA.

Idiots like you only hold them back more.

Take a bow, YOU are the problem.
