Cutting Edge Communications names its Top Ten Movers and Shakers of 2011

Cutting Edge Communications has named Kelver Darroux as the number one "Mover and Shaker" of 2011

Cutting Edge Communications (CEC) announces its list of Top Ten Movers and Shakers of 2011. A “Mover and Shaker” is a person, group, or organization (or thing) that has been a game changer; that has moved people; influenced or that has had impact for better or for worse.

This is the second successive year that Cutting Edge Communications is publishing the list and it is now a signature product of the company. CEC believes that such a list is important because assessment of impact in a society is necessary as well as healthy.
The Top Ten Movers and Shakers were named based on an individual/organization’s impact,
ability to be a game-changer and change how people behave.

The Top Ten Movers and Shakers (2011) are:

#10. Cyril Carrette—Police Chief

•    Resisted efforts to make the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force as a political football
•    By contrast he maintained the force’s effectiveness in its core duty of law enforcement and maintained the image of independence and professionalism for the office  of Commissioner of Police and the CWDPF.

#9. Tasha ‘Tasha P’ Peltier

•    First female monarch in more than 50 years of calypso competition in Dominica, beating back a stiff challenge from a returning 4-time calypso monarch Dennison “Dice” Joseph and the other big guns of calypso
•    Dominating calypso in 2011; winning three major titles, including Stardom Queen of the Tent, Calypso Queen, and Calypso Monarch
•    At 23 and a student at the Dominica State College Tasha P brings an air of sophistication to calypso
•    For making it woman time in calypso

#8.  Justina Charles—Minister for Youth and Sports

•    With the support of the Dominica Cricket Association and the West Indies Cricket board, Charles realized a historic feat for Dominica, for the first time hosting a Test match between West Indies and India
•    Mobilizing massive public support for the historic event, including massive crowds of spectators in the face of opposition calls to boycott the event
•    Doing it so successfully that Dominica was declared to have saved West Indies Cricket
•    Showing the ultimate potential of the Windsor Park Stadium

#7. United Workers Party—Parliamentary Opposition

•    For filing election petitions, including two dealing with alleged dual citizenship including one against the Prime Minister that kept the attention of the media, the government and the public on the workings of the constitution

•    For engaging in political activities including boycotting Parliament in an effort to maintain the pressure on a government with a strong mandate

#6. Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force

•    Persisting and finding missing Shanice Alana Jemmot who disappeared on February 17, 2011 and also finding and capturing 40 days later her abductor
•    Was on top of every major criminal activity from murder in Marigot to 1.5 million dollar cocaine bust to passport scam

#5. Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan

•    Throughout 2011 politics was dominated by court challenges to the government that threatened to unseat a popular Prime Minister
•    Senior Counsel Anthony Astaphan, as Lead Attorney in the constitutional matters for the government side, fought courageously to preserve the government’s standing thereby showing how robust our constitutional framework is
•    While leading the legal fight in court, Astaphan was successful at educating the general public on the workings of the court as well as the substance of the matters under consideration , never ceasing his aggressive advocacy on behalf of his friend Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and the governing Dominica Labour Party

#4. Roosevelt Skerrit—Prime Minister of Dominica

•    In the face of ongoing court action that could derail his political career and his government, leading the Government of Dominica, his Dominica Labour Party and the people of Dominica with grace and optimism

#3. Rayburn Blackmoore—Minister for Public Works, Energy and Ports

•    For supervising the Public Works projects in roads, airports and geothermal energy that promise to change the way we commute, fly and work
•    For keeping the public up to date with the progress of major national projects through frequent appearances in the media and thereby being in the forefront of the public consciousness

#2. The Dominican citizen

•    During 2011 the political opposition called for regime change, declared a united front against the government, including that they will contest the next general elections as one
•    In spite of tremendous effort by the opposition, to mobilize the Dominican citizen in opposition to the government and to harness the spirit of a worldwide protest movement, the Dominican citizen resisted any action that would weaken the government and bring instability to the country

#1. Kelvar Darroux—MP St. Joseph constituency

•    The disappearance of Shanice Alana Jemmot in February 2011, the breaking of the Mattieu Dam in July 2011, the flash flooding in Layou in August 2011, devastation from Tropical Storm Ophelia in September 2011 and the death of cadence icon Jeff Joseph in November 2011 all have one thing in common, they happened in the St. Joseph constituency
•    Darroux steadied the ship preventing chaos and loss of hope in an area that had more than its fair share of tragic events
•    Darroux comforted, and encouraged the people of the St. Joseph constituency putting on display a type of leadership that is not commonly experienced in Dominica; leadership of people rather than of projects
•    As MP, Darroux has no ministry under his direction and control, but was able to mobilize people and government in order to help the St. Joseph constituency to recover

According to Kamala, the criteria for selecting are impact and influence. What influence and impact Darroux brought to affect national events? The events (natural disasters, death of Jeff Joe, etc) in St. Joseph are what created the impact not Kelver Darroux, who, true, was present to represent his constituency. I think he did okay in being there with his constituents at the time of the disasters. With respect to the death of Jeff Joe (JJ), he appeared to be there to hug the limelight. One hardly saw JJ’s family, but Darroux was constantly showing up in the media, commenting on all things JJ. His constant presence in the media does not translate into impact or influence on events. Second, the release by Kamala says ”Darroux steadied the ship preventing chaos and loss of hope in an area that had more than its fair share of tragic events.” How was this measured, how was this conclusion reach?

Although Kamala stated on Kairi FM that media appearance is not the determining criterion, it appears that in actuality it was this that her PR firm used in selecting Darroux.

Maybe Cutting Edge Communications intended this as some simple, provocative satire or, possibly to score brownie points for the DLP. If the latter is the case it has badly backfired. True labour supporters do not need this kind of unintelligent, cheap and clumsy machination to support what they truly believe in.

Let me be the first to congratulate you Mr. Darroux for a job well done. I guess the St. Joseph constituency can now say they have a Parliamentary Representative they can depend on through thick and thin.
Well done! I pray that god will give you the strength and stability to continue the good work.
I am from the belles area and was a major supporter of the Freedom Party in the early 80’s, but when someone have done something to change the life of many, I just see it fitting to give you your recognition, regardless of who I support or not. So congrats again for a job well done, BRAVO!

Who or what is Cutting edge communications. “Mover and Shaker” is a person, group, or organization (or thing) that has been a game changer; that has moved people; influenced or that has had impact for better or for worse.” According to the article Carrette has guided the police force into a non political arena – are we kidding? I out of words so I will only offer these words; Seco, Isidore, Corbette ,Inspector voler largent; police recruits.

A reasonable list of Dominican do-gooders in 2011. My only – and biggest issue – is that much of the qualifying descriptors have a political slant. Quite unfortunate.

The Dominican Citizen would be first on my list. I notice that his/her resilience, surviving against all the odds – a docile economy, treacherous weather patterns, growing discourtesy nationwide, and yes, increasing political anguish – is not mentioned as a qualifying feature.

Number two would be the United Workers Party. For its brazen and unfazed efforts at keeping democracy alive and keeping the Constitution whole. This is no easy feat, especially when contending with a supremely popular and well-financed prime minister.

Prime Minister Skerrit would come in third on my list for his ability to withstand and rebuff attempts to, if not force him out of office, but make him a lame duck Prime Minister, simply awaiting his fate, as it were, at the hands of the Constitutional Courts. Instead, he continues to fearlessly embrace his mandate to rule and seek to improve Dominican prosperity.

Mr. Darroux would definitely place for all the reason detailed above and so would the CWDPF.

That would be it for my list.

    December 30, 2011

I fully support the number one pick! MP Darroux really displayed poised in the face of all the challenges facing his consituency. :-D

Having said that, why are we calling people “movers and shakers” for doing their jobs?!! Blackmore for supervising public work projects? Dah … isn’t that his job! The PM for leading with grace under pressure, again … dah?! The police chief. Alas, come up with a better list. It would have been more fun to read a list with notable characters, events, etc. in 2011 as opposed to calling folks movers and shakers for doing, in most cases, the mere basics of their jobs. We need to stop supporting nonsense.

p.s. I say it loud and I say it proud, I am a Labourite so don’t even do there.

I expected the DAIC CEO and Dr. Francis Severin to have made the list. Lennox Linton cannot be left out. Lucia Stedman, Bishop Malzare, Tiyani Benhazin, Miniyas and QTS gave impact to the society of more depth than Kelvar. C’mon Kamala! If you want this thing to be a good brand, dig deeper.

ITS RATHER UNFORTUNATE THAT NO REFERENCE WAS MADE TO AMBROSE GEORGE.
HE IS THE ONE WHO WILL BE THE NEXT PM OF DOMINICA AND WILL BE LIKELY TO REPLACE SKERRIT AS LEADER OF DLP.
I KNOW THAT THERE IS ALSO SOME MOVE TO HAVE HIM REPLACED AS A CANDIDATE BEFORE THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTIONS AND HE HAS PRIVATELY RESISTED EFFORTS TO HAVE A SNAP POLL IF THE DLP LOSES THE ELECTION PETITION CASE. HE IS ALLEGED TO HAVE SAID THAT SUCH A POLL AT THIS TIME WOULD BE AN UNNECESSAY DISTRACTION AND DRAIN ON THE ECONOMY. IT SEEMS SOME LABOURITES HAVE SUGGESTED SUCH A SNAP POLL BUT THE ROSEEAU SOUTH MP IS NOT LOOKING IN SUCH A DIRECTION.

IM PERSONALLY DISAPPOINTED THAT AMBROSE WAS NOT ON THIS LIST OF TEN MOVERS AND SHAKERS.HE IS A GOOD MAN.ALTHOUGH THERE IS SERIOUS DOUBTS OVER WHETHER HE WILL BE CHOSEN TO RUN FOR DLP AGAIN AND CONCERNS ABOUT HE NOT HAVING DONE ANYTHING SIGNIFICANT FOR NEWTOWN AS PARL REP.ITS REALLY WATER FOR GIRUADEL/EGGLESTON IN 12 YEARS AND NOTHING ELSE.

“A “Mover and Shaker” is a person, group, or organization (or thing) that has been a game changer; that has moved people; influenced or that has had impact for better or for worse.”

When I first read this, I thought this was serious and more structural, because that’s important, but after rereading the later part (or for worse) of this peace, I realized it’s not to be taken seriously.

A somber, less inept and more in-depth analysis of the areas covered would be important and productive for Dominica

THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF CUTTING EDGE IS SAYING TO US THAT IN ORDER TO BE IN THE TOP TEN MOVERS AND SHAKERS, YOU MUST BE A PERSON THAT HAS BEEN A GAME CHANGER THAT HAS MOVED PEOPLE ,INFLUENCED OR THAT HAS HAD IMPACT FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE. HAVING READ THAT CRITERIA, THE FIRST TWO PEOPLE I EXPECTED TO BE IN THE TOP TEN WAS MR.LENNOX LINTON AND MR. EDISON JAMES.MY DAD REMINDED ME THAT IT WAS MR. LINTON WHO MOVED THE SKERRIT LABOR PARTY GOVERNMENT SO VIGORIOSLY THAT THEY ENDED UP PAYING BACK THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO THE TREASURY, RE BIN BOOBALL. MY DAD ALSO REMINDED ME THAT IT WAS MR. JAMES WHO SHOOK A LADY SO VIGORIOUSLY WHEN HE SAID THAT IF YOU ARE AGAINST A MAN YOU ARE AN ANTI-MAN,NO SOONER HE SAID THAT, A DIRECTOR OF CED DISCLOSED THAT HER HUSBAND WAS NOT GAY. 51. wow!!!!!!
    December 30, 2011

No teacher, no nurse, no farmer could make that list? The list smells of what people in our society would bar their nose to avoid. It is prinicipally a partisan kudos offering. En passant, push in opposition, Tasha p and so on.

Cyril Carrette, on Mover and shaker list, but the heinous criminal firebombing act will not be moved or shaken, neither the case involving 42 charges filed for fraud.

Nobody could touch the Chinese business people selling toy guns to locals although that act is prohibited. Police told us of Zero tolerance, but we all know the authorities would not touch the Chinese. No investigation. no court. No case. No fine or jail.

No regard for the hard work of those farmers who continue to struggle to feed our people. They do not move or shake anything. In Dominica, one becomes a hero, if one is engaged in corruption and wrongdoings. If you are honest, truthful, crapaud smoke your pipe.

The health of an entire Layou Community under serious threat from the tons of cancer-causing pollutants being spewed from that asphalt plant close to the village. The movers and shakers must be the people of Layou who continue to voice their disgust. The community’s health is at great risk. The big foreign business man found favour with authorities against the cries of the entire village. On whose side was the Parl. Rep.? Did he utter any word on behalf of the poor people of Layou as regards their health and the negative impact from that asphalt plant?

For some, the TRUTH will never set them Free. They allow their party political affiliations to predominate over their spiritual faculties and will do anything possible to give credit to dishonesty, lies, corrupt acts.

  52. unbiased
    December 30, 2011

A very interesting list but I would like to know what is meant by a mover and shaker. I thought it was someone who impacted on the nation? This list is a political list and honestly I do not see what most of these people have done outside of their daily duties. Not being biased, I would have someone like Lennox Linton for bringing forward information to the public or even pastor Rodney for getting the churches together I heard he and the catholic bishop of Roseau together on a program. This for me would be more in the relm of mover and shaker. Justina Charles?? she didn’t bring the cricket to Dominica or Hon. Darroux, as Parl Rep. once there is a natural disaster he has to do his job like any other. what is so special about that. The police force? must do their job it is a daily duty.

So I would really like a clearer definition of a mover and shaker. The PM I agree, Tasha P I agree the opposition was doing their job and so was everyone else on this list. I am sure we have other people in Dominica who have gone beyond the call of duty or who have impacted on the lives of the people in either a positive or negative way to make this list. JUST MY OPINION AND OBSERVATION
