DAEC not ruling out protest action in Alkaline saga

Alkaline is set to perform in Dominica
Alkaline is set to perform in Dominica

The Dominica Association of Evangelical Churches (DAEC) has said that while no final decision regarding the performance of a controversial Jamaican artiste on the island, protest action is not being ruled out.

Earlan “Allkaline” Bartley, is expected to be the main act for a concert to be held at the Saaman Gardens in Canefield on May 2nd.

The DAEC said it is opposed to his lyrical content which, it claims, exhibits demonic activities.

Vice president of DAEC, Pastor Arlington Wilson. told DNO on Friday that the matter was “front line on our agenda” when the association met at the Flamboyant Hotel on Thursday.

“We are still looking at some options,” he said. “We are not ruling out protest action, we are not ruling that out at all…”

When asked whether he thinks protest action will have an impact or will meet its target, he responded, “if it meets, we will be happy, if it doesn’t we will still be happy, because at the end of the exercise people have to know what they are doing and we would be happy if the guy doesn’t come so that people will not hear some of his lyrical content.”

Wilson noted that DAEC doesn’t have a problem with Alkaline himself, but with his lyrics.

“Our problem really is not with the guy, our problem is with his lyrical content, and that is what concerns us,” he said.

He added that DAEC will be looking at a time of prayer and fasting, as well as holding a press conference and “other things that we feel that is very important to sensitize the general public.”

Just this week Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, said that unless Alkaline poses a security threat, the government cannot prevent him from entering and performing on the island, a statement that Wilson opposes.

That man looks as if he is starving. Why should some people do that to themselves? It is my feeling he ingests illegal drugs.
Is this the type of person whom the organizers want to perform in Dominica? You guys have no sense and taste whatsoever. You should be ashamed of yourselves, inviting such a person to D/ca..
Why did you invite him? How will his performance enhance those whom he will be singing to? We have already heard about the type of lyrics. Why invite him amidst controversy? I hope you will not live to regret it.

DAEC are using this as a distraction. the DAEC knows that it is largely irrelevant because of its inaction concerning the other social ills in society. this ALkaline matter is “low hanging fruit” so its easy to pick this up (no pun intended).

Come on DAEC. You mean to tell me you are so concerned about Alkaline and his supposedly demonic lyrics? I think you should be much more concerned about, and pray against, all the “witch craft” that is being practiced that is oppressing all the youth in the country, than a Jamaican singer.

It is very interesting that the DAEC are very concerns about Alkaline coming to Dominica because of his demonic lyrics. We have a government who have been accused over the years for corruptions, human trafficking, depriving citizens of their rights, corruptions in general elections and more, and they never lift a finger and come out and make statement against the wrong things going on here, They can’t be double standards.

  5. HFLE Teacher
    April 19, 2015

Why don’t we take the opportunity to educate the youth as to what is wrong with the lyrics?

Have you even listened to the lyrics? I don’t know Alkaline as that is not my kind music. I had my student spell out the words for me in class. It was terrible. There are many believers in my HFLE class and only 2 admitted they would still go to the concert.

I think education and honest mature discussion is a much better approach than banning the artist. That will just motivate even more those who really want to find it on the Internet. Now students who may otherwise be tempted are making up their own minds as to whether that right for them. Protesting and condemning not effective either. Fight fire with fire by promoting wisdom against vulgar devil references. There are youth who will make decisions for Christ out of this but we must be strong and not panic.

Xenophobia is a bad thing. Look at South Africa today. When Gaibu and I visited several years ago, we could feel it. Jamaicans now feel “these small islanders don’t like us.” This is not good for Caribbean integration.

The Dominica Association of Evangelical Churches must find more positive ways of responding to the alleged demonic lyrics of this Jamaican artist. The DAEC was fully responsible for pushing the Government to crudely detain & deport Tommy Lee. This was a blatant and appalling violation of the Chaguaramus Declaration, for which we all as citizens have to pay in settlement. How can you be so short-sighted and push for that again? I strongly criticized the Government action back then & by the same measure, I strongly commend Government’s allowing free expression in this case.

In fact this is an excellent mission opportunity. Prayer and fasting is good. How about we set up a booth near the entrance for handing out cold water, tracts and provide counseling? Honey &…

    • The Facts
      April 21, 2015

The PM did not say that Tommy Lee was welcomed. Tommy Lee knew very well that he was not welcomed yet he came due to the organizers. They are the ones to be blamed; not the PM.
Under the circumstances, how about this Alkaline is allowed to come and no one shows up for his performance? This would be better.

If Evangelical christo-fascists think Alkaline’s lyrics are “demonic” not only are the deluded but also I suppose they would agree that all the genocide in the Bible and the support for “The End Days” and subsequent murder of most of humanity, should be grounds for banning the Bible as well as the frequent “Crusades” where children are brainwashed with the hundreds of Bible lyrics. The following representative Biblical lyric about torturing and murdering babies and young girls and old men was chosen from hundreds of such BIBLICAL lyrics.

Its the “lord” is speaking here:

Deu 32:23 I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them.
Deu 32:24 They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.
Deu 32:25 The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man…

It is God’s world. He can do as He wishes. He commands and punishes those who do not obey him and for their wicked deeds to their fellow people. He who holds the key chooses who lives and dies.
Punishment is good for the soul. It is a lesson for the others as also yourself. It is for their own mortal and spiritual benefit. You will not see it this way because you are not so inclined. You need some good lecture in Holy Scripture reading/studying including the blessing and grace of God which you are presently devoid of. Sad and sorry for you.
God takes note of all we say and do. Only the “holy”, the clean, the pure of heart will enter Heaven.
The Holy Bible is the Word of God. Your thoughts, your words, your criticism and your action do not change a thing. God has spoken through the prophets. If you keep up this Holy Bible bashing against God, where will your soul end up? And also how will you age? This is something for you to serious contemplate.…

The words that you quoted are not what is exactly in all bibles of the different churches. Note the number of religions there are in the world. Ask their leaders how long has their church been established. Some people have re-written the bible, in their own words, to suit themselves and their congregation. I could give you a good lecture on that.

    • April 23, 2015

      Mako:

If you were versed in theology and knew the Bible better you would be less apt to quote verses (parts of verses) out of context and misapply them.

The scriptures you have quoted are not threats or curses. They are warnings spoken to the people of Israel during their time of backsliding and rebellion against God when they were breaking His commandments and indulging in all manner of sins. These forms of punishment were inflicted upon the ungodly more often in Old Testament times because it was a different era than we live in today, and God was pursuing a different plan and purpose in the world. (I could explain this but DNO does not give me the space to do it here under its 1,000 character per comment policy.)

God still punishes evil doers and his warnings still stand. Thankfully because of God’s plan for this present age we do not see His wrath in the same severity as they did in Old Testament times.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill, D.D., International Evangelist.

is the DAEC aware that I can lead protest action against their religious teachings if I do not support their beliefs? This is CARICOM and we CANNOT prevent the artists from working in Dominica, even if we do not like his messages. As Born Again Bleivers you guys need to pray and leave the fight to the Almighty God. Its not yours. Hope that our people do not pay their monies to listen to his garbage, thats all, STOP trying to enforce your life on others and just do what the Savior would do, pray and ask that JEHOVAH deals with it his way.

  11. April 18, 2015

The ”no security risk” excuse offered by Mr. Skerrit for accepting Alkaline is lame.

We hope the DAEC will focus on the reality that the worse security risk possible is the spiritual and moral risk Alkaline’s concert poses to the nation and especially to the young people.

Dominica is a beautiful island with many good people. It has the potential of developing a tourist industry that may yet be the envy of the Caribbean. It does not need a concert that encourages rebellion and disrespect for authority including the government while promoting sexual permissiveness, drugs, and devil worship.

The realm in which Alkaline exerts his influence – that of morals and values – is the arena in which the Evangelical Churches must represent Christ and speak for righteousness. The impact this kind of entertainment has on a community is not in the best interest of the government. It fosters civil disobedience and crime.

Sincerely, Rev. Donald Hill. International Evangelist.

…” promoting sexual permissiveness, drugs, and devil worship.” Reverend, are you serious? There is no other institution on earth that practices devil worship, engage in sexual permissiveness and drug use, like Christianity. You guys will answer to someone for this nonsense of trying to divide the Caribbean Islands to suite your own agenda. At the end of the day, Jamaicans will not take aim at DAEC, but innocent citizens who don’t give 2 cents about your over zealous reaction towards our brothers and sisters in the region.

      1) Catholic priests are more likely to pop little boys in the rear, than any other. For ritual practices – that’s devil worship, thus sexual permissiveness.

      2) Christians actually encourage others to actively partake in illegal drug activity, rather than using the herbs as medicine, as prescribed by the christian bible.

You people have to be joking. Dominican has gone from a place where there was no partying during lent to one where every Sunday is a party. Alcohol consumption is a problem, out of wedlock child birth is off the chart. But the icing on the cake is that the lyrics of songs during carnival is not always uplifting, with the sexual connotations of those lyrics. Some of the church leaders are known to have wife and mistress and DAECis silent, as far as I know, on the subject. I am not condoning the lyrics of Alkaline, lyrics encouraging satanism is unacceptable, but the churches should do more at educated the youth and make a concerted effort to bring Dominica back to the God fearing country it claimed to be. I said claim to be because we always had the obeah man and the soucouhah in Dominica. The Bible teaches that it starts with us. Clean our act before we start people like Alkaline for our problems.

Since when did Dominica not have Christians only. If it is, Dominica is really in a bad, ungodly shape which is why people like Tommy Lee and Alkaline were invited to perform in Dominica. The devil is really in your midst.
I was born and brought up in Dominica. I always knew Dominica as a Christian country. In those days it was predominantly Christian Catholics. They were all baptized. The majority of people went to church. Those who did not go to church was because they fell away through their sins of whatever nature.
What happened to decrease Christianity in Dominica? Is it any wonder that there are so many crimes/murders, rapes, child molestation, unloving and disrespectful people, the latter, some, toward their Prime Minister and other authority? It also tells by some as you who comment on DNO.
I feel sorry for all of you who call yourselves non-Christians. God help you lest you perish in Satan’s cauldron of everlasting fire.

Please don’t tell me the P.M.s decision is based upon the Constitution. People expected his previous decision (opinion) to be based upon the Constitution and just assumed it was! The Constitution is subject to interpretation.

We need to be pro active less re active. We are too emotional and not spiritual. The prayer and fast should be used to unite the body. It should be used to seek Gods directions on the matter. We should be confident enough to speak things into being.

Pastor Wilson, your response to protest action is pathetic: if we are one with Christ we should know whether or not God wants this artist here. Sometimes we try to stop the inevitable out of ignorance and excitement. God is not moved by emotions.

Pastors, arent you all hearing , Go and PRAY MORE, PREACH MOREMORE.The Bible admonishes us to pray without ceasing. Dont pray when you notice the wolf is already at your doorstep. Set your house in order. I am a born again believer who believe that our many of our so called pastors are not serious. All they do is dream of the salary at month end. Those innocent members are saying ‘ yes we have to support our pastors’ while those fellas become rich on them. Gods work is not a secular business. If you want a job apply to a secular institution and dont use the church as your pass. Its a shame that the PM has to tell you what to do

    • April 23, 2015

People are asking how the PM knows how MUCH a pastor prays and how he knows how much a pastor SHOULD pray.

If a pastor should preach the Word of God more I am wondering how he could do this. A church has only a certain number of services each week. Normally, the pastor preaches once in a service. He does counseling sessions, conducts weddings and funerals, and visits homes to minister to the sick and shut ins. He visits hospitals and prisons. He has meetings with his own church leaders (the pastoral team, elders, deacons, etc.) From time to time there are meetings with other pastors to attend, along with conventions, etc.

Pastors are Christ’s ambassadors according to 2 Corinthians 5:20. They have a responsibility to represent Christ and speak for Him in matters that involve the moral well being of the nation. For 2,000 years pastors have had this role in society. It is part of what they do.

It is his lyrics that makes him popular folks! As a believer myself I don’t care to listen to his music and I will not try to get his lyrics since I heard already they are bad. This is so embarrassing. Dominica is not the Vatican. We SHOULD be a free nation that has freedom of religion (meaning all religious views are valid to be heard and expressed, not just DAEC’s Christianity, despite what those fanatics think) and freedom of thought and expression. When one religion takes over, we lose that freedom. It doesn’t matter if you are Christian or not–you must be humble enough to acknowledge that other religious views exist and yours might not be 100% correct, so don’t act so rude as if your evangelism is all that exists and matters. Stupes!

And all this demon nonsense…what next? Will DAEC say to ban Beyonce videos because some idiot online says it contains ‘Satanic’ ‘Illuminati’ imagery? DAEC is acting like this is the Dark Ages, like people are about to be brought into Roseau, attached to a pyre, and burnt alive for being witches…DAEC sounds like the Inquisition in 2015.
