Danger on Belles road

untitled-5

Motorists and pedestrians using the Dr. Nicholas Liverpool Highway in Belles are asked to proceed with extreme caution as sinking road and a landslide are posing danger in the area.

Reports reaching DNO indicate that some motorists were caught by surprise by the unexpected occurrences on the road.

Those who passed through the area on Thursday morning are advising motorists to avoid the road altogether and seek alternative routes.

Dominica is presently being affected by a trough system, which according to the Met Office, is generating unstable weather across the island.

Cloudy conditions, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to continue to affect the island today.

Persons in areas prone to flooding, landslides, and falling rocks are advised to be vigilant and to exercise caution, the Met Office said.

The people refuse to revolt against bad government policy; so the environment is speaking loud and clear.

Some road dangers are man made and some caused by mother nature. The danger ob Bells road we mother nature now but if it remains like this until next election or until someone dies then we need to blame the government. On the west coast road mother nature brought some Tarrish on the highway on independence day that blocked the lane heading to south to roseau, and partially blocked part of the west lane to possie, which means only one vehicle at a time can pass between the two lanes. All it takes is a backhoe less than ten minutes to clean. Yet a week laterit is still there and no one cares about it, though the PM, Reggie, ian, Roselyn pass on it every day. Are they waiting for a fatal accident, especially involving a tourist for them to clean it? This is rediculous and motorists must start to sue the government for road hazard when they cause accidents.

And what does that have to do with an act of nature/God?

Skerrit is the Prime Minister not the Met Office.
I cannot comprehend why we always have to find out there is bad weather after a catastophe or after events like these.

That place in Belles was a weak spot even when they were constructing that road and nothing has been done to fix it after the damage caused by Erica, except put a few barrels there with tape, not even a warning light at night. But no, they had to dismantle a bridge and build a new one that was not a priority at great expense. I say this road is more vital than that one bridge in Roseau. Right now Roosevelt Skerrit galavanting in the far east again with his mate Mano and not here to look after the shop. You got your priorities completely wrong P.M.

Soon the road will be impassable for traffic to the airport from Roseau and we will either have to go via Portsmouth or Castle Bruce again (…that is if the Roger road to Pt. Casse is not blocked either. Iusing Canefield again, sorry but I prefer that to long and dangerous drive to Melville Hall and then imagine to find that LIat is not flying or too late for my connectring flight.
Thanks Skerrit and your partner Gaddarkhan. And you are boasting about so much progress.
Roads built but not maintained but you get rid of the Public Works dept?

what does an unstable terrain affected by a weather system got to do with skerrit, what are you some type of monkey or what??? sometimes I wonder if you all people are really Dominicans…for way back in time even before I was born dominica has these problems, dominica is prone to these types of land erosions, dominica is an entirely water logged country same as certain countries in the pacific realm where they experience monsoon rains, dominica is mountainous and the water source is above in the hills, the water filters down into the lands about,so what you expect to be happening after all those years, especially belles and these areas, which is a moist region, you all people need to think before you all write political nonesense’s,it seem you all never did science in school.

@forreal,you seem to have forgotten the adage that “the buck stops here”.Where you ask with the leader, the one in charge. As leader he has to be blamed for not having vision and foresight to articulate a way forward for things to get better not stay the same.Dominica is not the only place in the world with heavy rainfall,America has a lot of the micro climatic conditions that exist in Dominica, and they find ways to utilize science and engineering to overcome the challenges that nature presents. We have access to the information and can create drains, contour the land and do other things to mitigate the risk caused by high rainfall and water table.Don’t give me this crap that it has always been that way.SKERRITT and his government must use modern knowledge and skills to do things better.Lets stop doing things like our grandparents did and accept it as normal

Please, don’t insult our intelligence . I for one certainly know all about our challenging terrain in Dominica, having walked and crossed it on foot and by vehicle may times, during the day as well as at night This is exactly why we spent millions and millions to make improvements but if these roads are not maintained, or not constructed properly in the first place they turn into death traps. No amount of boasting is a substitute for preventative maintenance and only turns into more idle “kaka chess”.

@st jean what America has done to mitigate the risk caused by heavy rainfalls and flooding, man doh make me laugh, boss this is a job I once did in America, storm drainage and guts maintenance, are you crazy or something, you must read about natural disasters in America or better yet see it on youtube, just type natural disasters in America, with the shit you spilling, rivers run their banks all the time taking lives and destroying homes and infrastructure, land erosion and rockfalls covers homes and damage roadways in rural areas, massive floods, man I have never read more crap, what skerrit suppose to do..build a trump wall along every hillside in dominica, dominica’s roadway have got more drainage and guts than st Thomas right there your next door neighbor which is US,take a trip so you can expand your knowledge…dummy..you must be one of them that think dominica so backwards, you fooling your friggin self

@forreal,lets keep it real,OK.One well understands that when there is a disaster like Erica or Hurricane Mathew in the US that there is going to be system failures on a massive scale. No PHD required to comprehend that. However the regularity of these failures in Dominica and with this now recent Belle’s road is run of the mill, everyday rainfall and weather conditions. Therefore I don’t get your point.Wheel and come again

@st jean again what you are writing nonsense.i worked on that road under the Roseau to hatten garden road rehabilitation program, this road was done by a stateside engineering and construction firm named nello & teer, consutlted by louis berger,so what crap you dealing with, the wet area does not have a solution, unless a new road is constructed but not through belles and di’a bunche, the history of that roadway was a short cut, they had to bridge a giant gorge with tree logs back in the olden days, you guys are politically stupefied and blinded with the ignorant and lack of Dominica’s knowledge and history, when you coming up against boy,you got to know where you coming from

It’s quite clear that the proper engineering analysis was not carried out when this road was designed. Same with E.O. LeBlanc Highway. Politicians just want to break ground and cut ribbons, they don’t want to do the hard work because it will take longer and their constituents (and maybe politicians as well) do not understand why its necessary.

Jonathan St Jean! are u real, what do u say with regards to all those sink holes happening all over the USA,not even when it rains. Are’t these engineers in the USA more competent than those we have in Dominica?Man get a life.

      • But, BEB, I came to America, on the 6th day of May of 1980, and though I went to other place in the world, and back to the Caribbean on vacation, I can say in the almost forty years I am living here I have not seen or heard about all the Sink-holes you mentioned.

Now in the almost forty years I been here I am only aware of two places in Florida where sink holes has occurred, other than that, there is no vast occurrences of sink holes in the America!

When a water main pipe brakes, and the streets are flooded out, leaving a six or seven feet hole, which are quickly repaired, that is totally different for a sink hole which is basically a bottomless pit!

The last one in Florida took a house with a guy sleeping inside, to this day the house nor it occupant were never seen again.
