Dangerous cliff threatens residents of Dubique

The road under the cliff

Residents of Dubique and environs are concerned after a series of landslides in the last few weeks have made traveling under the cliff leading to the area more treacherous and at times impossible.

Three landslides in about as many weeks have exposed a significant portion of the rock face on the side of the cliff making it dangerous for motorists to traverse the road under it. Motorists see it as a real hazard since rocks come tumbling down its side on a daily basis.

One bus drivers, who traverses the route numerous times a day and who requested anonymity, has spoken about many incidents of tumbling rocks. He called it a very serious hazard to the residents of nearby communities and indicated that it plagues those who have to drive there daily.

He said, “It is a very critical and dangerous area for people who have been using the road. It’s like every week we have a landslides. One day I was going up there with my bus and rocks came down and broke four windows on my bus. Some time ago, a guy was riding on the back of a bike, stones came down and broke his leg and he spent three months in the hospital.”

He continued, “The first landslide we had the other day, I was the first bus coming down the road and I saw some rocks coming down and stopped. About twenty minutes later, the landslide came down. It is a situation where stones come down everyday rain or sun, everyday. Just the other day a piece of wood came down and broke this guy’s windscreen.”

The bus driver also feels that the government should seek to do something to grant some relief to the motorists and pedestrians who use the road daily.

“I feel it’s time that the Government tries to do something about that road because it’s something that affects everybody. It is a real serious situation. I’m not sure what can be done but we must try. Right now God is protecting us. It’s only God’s protection is why we haven’t lost any lives on this road. We just believe in God, if not we couldn’t do this,” he concluded.

That’s the most dangerous road I’ve driven.
Last time I had to weave stones and look up to get across. Why is it that if a constituency don’t vote a for a ruling party
they receive little or no support economically and socially? It’s about time we profess politics as it should be. It is Soviet and Chinese style politics in DA – if you don’t follow us you suffer.

Sad; but true, the more things change the more things remain the same. My Dad and I recently were discussing the condition of the Dubique road.

He had just return from Dominica earlier this year, and he could not believe that no Government had address this situation. I have a feeling that road may have been built during Fedel’s days as Parl. Rep. for the southern district.

Dr. Honeychurch help me out there, you may have some insight on the dubique road.

I am not a historian but I am “young” enough to know that it wasn’t built during Hon. Stanley Fadelle’s reign. That constituency was represented by Hon. Rayland St.Luce and it included Tete Morne, Grand Bay, Petite Savanne, Bagatelle, Fond St Jean, Dubique, Pichelin and Bellevue Chopin. Hon. E.O.Leblanc was Premier at the time and DA only had 11 constituencies.

Hon. Fadelle lost to St. Luce every time and only won the Petit Savanne constituency when it was seperated from the Grand Bay consttuency in the 1970’s. My guess is, Premier Leblanc built that road. Have you heard the song about “chimen weve ovant” (laplaine/Delices area). The road, pottable water and rural electrification revolutions were pioneered by Premier E.O.Leblanc. That’s why Dominicans loved him.

There’s no easy solution. Resurfacing the road does not eliminate the danger from landslides. That cliff is hundreds of feet above sea level. That ridge is between two rivers; the Geneva River and the Dubique River and it runs several miles back inland, into Perdue Temps (locally we say:Peddy Taa- [help my kweyol]). The Pichelin River then merges with the Perdue Temps River, forming the Geneva. So an alternative route is complicated and would involve several bridges. Dubique lies in a valley and the ridges on both sides are very steep. But, I agree that we need to put our engineers to work to alleviate that problem.

I remember very well in the mid-sixties, when a man was killed by a large rock that came down on a passing vehicle on that very same road. The truck belonged to one by the name of Skeff from Fond St.Jean. This is 2011, and the beat goes on. Sout City ought to revolutionize their thoughts about the Government they elect. The Grand Bay district is the last on their agenda. All they want is the people’s vote.

    August 18, 2011

Thanks DNO for posting this message. This is not a Dubique Problem it more affects us in Bagatelle, Petite Savanne, Delices, Fond St Jean. I believe Government should explore an alternative route to build a new road as no matter what the sea and cliff will still be there. I sugguest the Government of Dominica should built the road to pass inside the village of Dubique and end up Morne piey road. And to My Parl. Rep. Honourable Doctor Darroux if you cannot get that done please follow what the minister of Public Works in Trinidad did. Waiting Patiently to see is going to happen.

Who is the Parl Rep for the district? I think he/she should threaten to resign if this road is not rehabilitated asap. Land reclamation and adequate sea defence is required at that site. This situation is deplorable in 2011. This section of road is along the main south/south-eastern artery. Are we waiting for lives to be lost?

funny the past two parlreps for the petite savanne constituency have made grand bay their homes after elections.baron npw lives in grand bay and darroux now lives in grand bay. what a shame and both of them are from petite savanne.wow.i mean even if they live in petite savanne they cannot prevent disasters but at least the people will feel a better sense of togetherness with their parlrep. but is time for the other villages to brake that monopolly .

i nevery new that dubic and that area is a separate federation from the rest of dominica. so you want the people of dubic to go out there and find the funding for a project of this magnitude? anyway the entire country uses that road.let dubic people help themselves, nonesense.workers make road to go fabre up to now them poeple there not voting workers. that is what a government is there for development across the board. if workers did that in a labour strong hold it would be a shame if labour refuses to get a project going under this cliff.

    • August 18, 2011

The reason for voting and electing a PR and government, building.repairing and maintaining roads is the job of the government no the villages, Donald Tusk, Skerrit need to take the palace money and get going on the roads, hospitals, police station, etc before it’s too late, this picture is very scary, people give thanks to the almighty things could have been worst

Hats of to DNO for publishing this story! Those are my sentiments exactly as a user of this road. Something needs to be done urgently, but the government pays no attention to this area because it is a guaranteed seat for them; but i’ll be the first one to say: “NOT MY VOTE AGAIN!”

I hope Dominicans are seeing where the government’s priority is. I have read about this piece of road before, about three weeks ago when the tropical storm was affecting the island. I thought by now, this area would have been looked at by professionals and some plan of action implemented, before people have accidents and loose their lives. All those who think the government is there for the people, be fair and square.
