DGS teachers protest alleged student attack

The Dominica Grammar School

Some Dominica Grammar School teachers are reported to have engaged in a short spate of protest action on Wednesday morning, briefly abandoning their classes.

Sources close to the matter told DNO some teachers had been refusing to teach classes, in protest against an incident where one of their colleagues was attacked by a student.

Reports are that the male teacher had to be treated at the Princess Margaret Hospital after alleged injuries inflicted by the student.

One source also said that the student concerned was on Tuesday taken to Police Headquarters in connection with the incident.

When Dominica News Online visited the Grammar school just before lunchtime Wednesday, there was no visible protest going on.

And Chief Education Officer Steve Hyaccinth who was on the compound and had apparently been having a meeting with the school principal, said he was not aware of any protest and that he was paying a “normal” visit to the educational institution.

However one security guard was able to confirm that some teachers had earlier abandoned their classrooms, and that security personnel had had to ensure that the students in those classes were given some sort of temporary supervision.

Dominica News Online is following the Grammar School problem and will have a further update.

my heart goes out to the teacher and teachers. imagine having a class of 30 students, with all different kind of personality and problems, the teacher comes in every day to teach the children and still deal with thoes with attitudes n those with probs and at the end of the day they end up at the hospital? hmmmmm parents need to look MORE into their children sepecially those which are obviously problem children……….

    Hello viewers.
I’m a student of the Dominica Grammar School, and all I have to say is this is foolishness.Every school has fights like these but because of the speculation and this so called ‘strike’ you’re hearing about this.Things like this happen in schools everyday, and I know because I have several friends.Since when do teacher have to go on strike to get someone expelled? This should be a question the ministry should be thinking about. If there was an incident like this in any other public school, I’m sure that student wouldn’t be a part of that school anymore.
We as students shouldn’t suffer for this foolishness.

    Yours Sincerly,
    #Depressed 5th Formers.

students stood behind the teachers actions because if it were their friend in a situation like that they would have their friends back….. Fari is a friendly colleague and was there fro the students… And those who know nothing about this man and the close relationships he had with the teachers and students..i think they should shut up… We are just having his back like he would have ours.. Government and their U.S.E stupidness is the cause of this…. Therefore should take responsibility and listen to the teachers

On a serious note that is despicable and should be dealt with immediately. Bring back Felix Wilson or get Br. Germain. Wilson and Germain had to deal with a set of hoodlums including the “Honorable” but I never heard of this type of violence. If they want to be violent bring in the Police to deal with them!

Time to start Private high Schools using a radical approach to education – Differentiate your product – Set high standards and requirements for both teachers and students. Charge higher school fees. Pay teachers better salaries. Let U.S.E. take care of the misfits; with the understanding that they too need guidance. However it should not be at the educational disadvantage of those who take their lives more seriously. The Orion Academy makes a great alternative at this time. The Saint Martins Secondary School builds strength on discipline. The Wesley High School is small but with great promise.

Remember that the normal school system is not the ideal for all students and that a more vocational type of training might be more appropriate for some. Whatever happened to the wood work shop and the metal work shop that Mr. Severin and Mr. George used to oversee at D.G.S.?? Things that make you go hmmmmmmm! And what about Speech and Drama Clubs? Now here is one for you; do you know that there is NOT ONE School Magazine printed in Dominica? I could go on and on but I think the astute reader will get the point.

People used to say, in defense of the misfits, that even a stopped clock is right twice a day. But that was then. In today’s digital world a stopped clock is totally BLANK AND USELESS!

my friend Deleted… when u mix good apple with bad apple… u will end up with bad appless… only!!!!
remember that my friend… that’s the problem that u.s.e causes… u see you send your child to the best schools.. grow them well.. with respect…. the whole nine… guess what… in high school has a set of wolves ready and willing to turn ur lil good sheep into a wolf also…. when u put bright and willing students in the same room with a bunch of nimcompoops… the greater chance is that these ‘willing’ students will begin to misbehave also… that’s why in d.g.s in my time it had 1-1 1-2 1-3 1-4 1-5 etc… 1-1 and 1-2 were strictly scholars and bursars if you in 1-3 then u can hang… 1-4 would have those who pass with lower grades in common entrance and some willing repeaters…. 1-5 well u know is the set wolves lol…. only repeaters… so for all forms is so it was o.k… but now with the U.S.E… is one soup dat have… so geniuses are not given no protection or ‘special’ treatment… so expect ur bursar and scholar to misbehave… if not then save your money and send them to Orion Academy (private)
and Mr/Mrs admin… the new feature looks good but i have a problem when i press ‘enter’ to skip a line… it comes out ‘stuck’… skipping a line allows for better reading… it have wp plugins that can do a better job… w.p plugins are mostly free….

I suggest an open day once a month for concerned parents to enter all schools to assess and interact with teachers and children.

….Well organised in order to get results.

It’s difficult to just sit behind a computer with all our concerns. PTA is too limited.

We need some real humane measures to get our schools to be.

Personally, I need to invite myself there. I have confidence that we can fix this problem.

Teachers/parents/children hold strong better must come. Our children are all given to us by the Great Divine. Let’s do a good job at it.

My alma mater! No disrespect folks but when I went to D. G.S in the time of Mr. Felix Wilson it was a well respected institution. It was a school one had to earn their way into. One would have been proud to wear that attire. Nowadays all sorts of children are being enrolled. It’s time that business of UNIVERSAL SCHOOL EDUCATION be looked into because we all know that every child is unique and not everyone is academically inclined. It’s time that students be screened and those who meet the necessary standards be enrolled. As for those who believe that they are big woman and big man CHANCES is located on the Jimmit Highway.

    Dear Dom-in-cans

    SHame ShamE ShammEEE

This has nothing to do with politics or the Prime Minister.

It has everything to do with the PARENTS. Manners at HOME carried to school.

Kids curse and beat their parents, they start from a young age some before they can walk and talk. And what do parents do? They laugh at the cute little “baby” and say it’s just a child. He/She will change in time.

When that child goes to primary school and the teachers again report their child. What do the parents do? Again, they make noise with the teachers. “Take care you touch my child”. When the child hears that they act worst.

Parents it’s time you all tie your waist and do whats right with your kids. Cause tomorrow they will shame you on DNO, or like some do now a-days pay bail or in the worst case scenario bury your own child.

It should not be this way open your eyes parents do not spare the rod and spoil the child. You only spoiling your homes and the country.

@ disgrace…. once again i am not saying that some kids are just rude period….they have no excuse to be rude they are just bad eggs….they are human being ..they were born sinful…. but in many cases at least those i have seen…parents are the cause….the parenting style/methods need to be changed

you have mentioned how evil and disrespectful this 16 year old is to his mother…..have it occurred to you that it is probably payback for the way he was treated when he was younger….do you know how much blows he gotten for ridiculous reasons…how helpless he felt and now that he is older /bigger/stronger….now that the mother can no longer beat him…he is taking advantage… cause beating is the only form of discipline Dominicans know about… i am not condoning his behavior…i am just saying he probably has a lot of anger in him from what has happened to him in the past….and people are different some may not react in this manner but others will

Ok pple let’s learn some facts:
Its not the first time teachers are being physically abused by children at DGS.
They are constantly verbal abused and some sexually harrassed by the students.

Students come to that school with drugs to sell and some high on drugs. Some say they come just to hang with friends. Some don’t give a damn BUT their are those who want to learn.

Teachers have no power! We cannot hit the students or send the disruptive, rude and uncontrollable students outside. Detentions are nothing to them

The security guards are ineffective! Cannot stop a fight!!!! Some alook old enough to be my grandfather!!!

They refuse us to expell these students, but these students prevent us teachers from doing our jobs!!!

We teach, most of us, because we have a passion for educating the little minds….
But how effective are we or can we be when we do not feel safe? When we just have to seat and watch children fight children or other teachers?

And mr hyacinth!!! Thou shall not lie!!! I hardly come to the school. And ‘normal visit’? You all don’t do anything to make the school safe!!!

Why isn’t the money carded for the state palace put aside to equip and to train teachers properly to curb the growing problem? Why isn’t there facilities to really help the “troubled” kids who do those things? What is the priority right now? Teachers are barely getting paid for bus fare to their jobs, after bills, much less to be put in a situation where they have to pay $500 for head scan for an injury sustained at work(the school). A large number of students at DGS are low achievers and we do not have a choice as to who attends the school. The parents who attend meetings are those of the few high achievers we have. Don’t blame the home? School meetings are called how many parents show up? Class of 32, 5 parents show up? And there are many more than this particular student. They continue to prey on the weaker ones, threaten teachers in and out of school, carry their drugs, and they keep coming back. Suspension upon suspension. What are we doing about it? So those of you who are just giving your mouth chain about if we didn’t know what we were in for when we went into the service etc know what you are talking about. It’s who is in the kitchen that does feel the heat.

    February 15, 2012

It is all well and good to comment, but when you are in the situation its a different story. I think Dice via Pat said it best in his song when he says “Parents with one child or two wouldn’t understand how you deal with a class of 21 or 32.” Some parents have 1, 2, 3, and they hold their heads and bawl.
I don’t think any amount of training can prepare you to be a teacher these days. The kind of abuse that teachers face on a daily basis is not funny at all. The fact is that teachers are not held in the same esteem that they were before. Why? Society has changed, young people have no respect for authority, they rebel against all forms of social discipline. Parents do not or are unable to discipline their children. Some teachers themselves are to blame. They don’t conduct themselves in a manner in and out of school that commands or is worthy of respect. The MOE must accept some of the responsibility here. This USE is frustrating students and teachers alike. Students enter high school not being able to read, write and express themselves properly. The support and remedial programmes needed are not there. That being said I seriously condemn the attack against the teacher. The student is obviously a threat not just to teachers but to other students as well. School should be a place of safety, and any student who disrupts the school environment and the process of learning should be dealt with swiftly and harshly.

We need to dscipline our children as well and let them know in no uncertain terms that they got to respect the Headmaster, Teachers, student, themselves and I am sorry I should have said Our Heavenly Father first. School can refer to the students or just the building but I was telling the person that she cannot say she hold the school responsible for what happens to her child when a fight goes on be she was the one who put him in that dangerous school in the first place ok

sure, you would say that but you would blame the parents, the teachers and the school system but not the students.children are not perfect you should know this more that half the number of parents do not know what happens at their child’s school. i think the problem is the dumb and troublesome students they put in the school, not anyone else some of them do not even care about school the same way you adults do not care about work at least a small amount of you.some of you rather talk about politics, to me politics is garbage. get your priorities straight people, this is coming from a 15 year old boy.

      February 15, 2012

Tiny, are you a teacher? if you love the kids then go and teach. That one-sided opinion you call ‘love’ is exactly what is killing our school systems. Everybody want to please the kids NOW, instead of helping and educating them for tomorrow. For instance: people had issues with Common Entrance because it left some students out of high school (made them feel bad etc). But if you are ill-prepared, and cannot read and write, you should not be in high school. You should be back in primary school or in another institution learning to read and write. Also the teachers should not be forced to pay for material to learn to ‘deal’ with children. They are not psychologists. That is why schools now have guidance counselors.

yep i believe you…some kids are just ill-mannered/rude/bad however you want call it…I’m not denying that human being..what did God say about their heart…

but some students have a disorder…while others come from bad homes….a lot of times parents are the problem..foolishness in the heart of the child…it is up to the parent to teach to guide and to discipline in a proper manner

some guy came up with a program on how to deal with defiant kids….he himself was a defiant kid…he was very disobedient at home and school…he had oppositional defiant disorder…..he came up with ways on how to relate to these kids…. on how these kids can be treated…what his parents and teachers could have done differently

travelling on a bus and listening to these children and their behaviour on the buses, even before they start their misbehaviour they will start running their mouths disrespecting seniors on the buses, this is so sad, gone are the days, when villagers were responsible for disciplining children, then when you come home your parent would do the rest, spear the rod and spoil the child this is what happening in Dominica right now

  42. Former Teacher
    February 15, 2012

I stand in solidarity with my colleagues.Once a teacher always a teacher! I am not condoning any abuse of children verbal, physical or otherwise in their homes or at school, however having had an upclose view to this practice it is sad and appalling the way teachers are treated in Dominica. Even Principals often forget that teachers are humans, and just take the students side. I refuse to teach in the US where I live or anywhere else though I am so drawn to and passionate about Education. Teaching is a thrilling and fullfilling job, but some parents are abusive to teachers and children enter classrooms and act out based on what they hear at home.

Dominica Grammar School is overloaded and stressful, this adds to the daily chaos at that institution. Universal Education has failed us, we have kids who can barely read at grade 5 level forced into secondary education, the result is of course distraction and poor attendance. They have no other avenue to vent their frustrations, they are clueless of what is going on in the sadly can’t grasp one thing, so they resort to being bullies, class clowns and all rounder attention seekers. Try to reign them in and you are asking for war. You have secondary school kids smoking weed laced with God knows what and totally out of control, girls bringing alcohol into classrooms, pornography, cell phones has been added to the distraction and this is a recipe for disaster.

When will the Ministry of Education and its’ officials take reign of Education and our children? what are we supposed to wait for a child to kill a teacher? by then it will be too late.

Save our children, help our teachers, should any teacher be found wanting or undesirable move them out, the profession is not for them, however something must be done.

USE not the problem. Stop the blame game. It starts in the home. Prayer has left the home. Parents are just talking and not walking the talk and doing something than what they preach. Our yes is not yes and our no is not no anymore. The children ses our weaknesses and lose repect for us at home and then they carry this to the school where they have no respect for self and others. Take away all cellphones, games, computers from them and let tehm read to get the research work done. Be open eyes to notice what they are doing. The Internet is good but it is also rotten. you ask where all this pornography coming from? They download on the playstations and Xbox and even on their phones as well. So they exposed to that nastiness and all those things distract them.

We probably need to be strict once again and dictate to them and draw up their time table and punish them more not with the whip though. Althought the bible says Spare the rod and spoil the child. They should leave our homes in the morning and know that we as parents will not encourage anyone who is not respectful at school.
Knowing that then I am sure they will try to behave at school. Stop making excuses for them and hey look for the tricks .. they know alot. Monitor their goings and their comings. Do surprised visits to the school so they say Boy I ain;t taking chances with my mom or dad.

Violence is not the answer to anything. It doesn’t matter what is happening at home, a kid in high school knows better than to take violence to school, especially to a teacher.

The teacher should be allowed to sue his/her parents.

    • Ex-teacher
      February 15, 2012

Tiny: teachers are asked to not only teach but offer pastoral care to students. A teacher’s job is never done, and sometimes to the detriment of his/her family life. The Ministry of Edu has given “children” rights precedence over the fact that students need to be respectful. A child coming to school with a home situation can be helped by the school, but sweetheart, there are few such cases reaching a teacher’s ear. Some secondary schools now have guidance counsellors. I squirmed the other day when I found out that my past school now has a Doctor of Psychology to deal with the students. And many of the cases have nothing to do with home treatments, but with disruptive behaviour. USE has killed the Dominican education system by sending students who can’t even write their names to High School. What do we expect at the end of the day, then for these students to become discouraged and act up in classes. These situations need to be addressed soon. I left teaching when the Min of Edu removed the school rules at this some school where this alleged incident occured. That was since 2003. Every Thursday an ambulance used to come to the compound and it was becoming overwhelming. The Ministry, PARENTS and schools need to stop hiding and say what is really going on. Parents can’t even send their children to any school these days, because the school may more break your child than build your child. Teachers, all underpaid, are fed up and tired. Really, it is time this thing get addressed. Mr Prime Minister, please intervene if you have to.

You are so true,Parents, teacher have no control of this generation, there is a 16 year old boy who, fights with his mother, goes to school when he wants, comes in anytime he wants sometime 3:15am or rather never shows up,when ask where were u he shouts at his mother and promise to kill her.the matter was reported to the police and nothing was done.Whenever at all time his mother tries to correct him but he shouts at her.The information reaching the mother is that he is now using drugs, making “Bom” And she cries everyday. His gratefulness is I am 16 you cannot touch me. You cannot lock me out, and don’t matter what, you must provide my meals for me, it eh matter what i do and how i do it.this is called the rights of the child. Isn’t that fear adults. All these policy maker must use your intellect to make good judgement calls when adapting policy from other developed countries stop hiding behind the salaries because soon from you all will not have a society to even govern. See the introduction of the rights of the child we have seen 1.Increase in crime, alcohol abuse, students drop out from school, ammunition, broken up families, disrespect for the elderly, increase in gang related activities, lesbianism,Buggery, sophisticated methods of drug trafficking, vehicle theft, decline in agriculture may i add that it is all fear to have a University graduate at every home but what happens to the technical wing of the D.S College, what happens to that group(plumper, carpenter fisherman electrician) that are not equipt with the theoretical skill. Teacher soon from now you will be teaching from your laptops just to ensure that you are away from these kids.Just mark my words.Policy maker implement thing in proportion asses and then move on.
