There were three persons shortlisted for this yearly recognition by Dominica News Online (DNO). We had Lennox Linton, Matt Peltier, and Jerry Brisbane as the frontrunners, but after deeper consideration, we almost overlooked a very worthy person: Sheridan Gregoire, the president and chief executive officer of West Indies Communications Enterprise Limited (WICE), which operates Q95 FM.
Why Mr. Gregoire? Some will argue that the overseas-based Mr. Gregoire is seldom seen or heard in Dominica. This is exactly why Mr. Gregoire has been chosen as the hero for 2010: he not only runs one of the most popular radio stations on island, but one of the most controversial.
Q95 FM provides a voice for the voiceless and is seen by the public as a crusader for truth, transparency and good governance through its popular hosts Lennox Linton, Mat Pelter, and Angelo Allen.
And who is in charge of Q95? Sheridan Gregoire!
It is no secret that Mr. Gregoire’s station and its hosts have been slapped with frequent lawsuits and legal threats that could threaten to shutdown and silence the radio station. But it is obvious that Mr. Gregoire’s unyielding spirit and strong determination has enabled the radio station to stay on air.
In the past, other media owners have responded in fear, fired staff, suspend radio hosts and programmes, and “dumb down” to favour political parties, individuals and entities.
It is obvious that Mr. Gregoire is not swayed by threats, he is not intimidated, and cannot be easily bought with anything, including money.
Without Mr. Gregoire’s spirit of determination, there would be no Lennox Linton, Mat Peltier, and Angelo Allen on Q95.
When other doors were closed, Mr. Gregoire opened his, not only to accommodate a few on-air personalities but to give Dominicans an alternative voice.
One does not have to be seen or heard to be a personality of the year. It is by their actions and the effects of their actions that speak volumes.
Many will not agree with our selection. Some may brand us as political. Some may brand us as being biased. Some may brand us as leaning to sides. But everyone is free to think what they want. This is their democratic right. But many persons would not have had the guts like Mr. Gregoire to operate a radio that is constantly under attack legally and verbally because of its crusaders.
This selection has nothing to do with Mr. Gregoire’s or his radio station’s perceived political affiliations. This has to do with his personal bravery, show of character and strength to continue running such a radio station despite any financial or legal storms.

Many times media owners are overlooked for good reasons, but for our Personality of the Year for 2010, Mr. Sheridan Gregoire shines brighter than a knight in shining armor.
My DNO personality of the year award should have gone to “ANONYMOUS” for his unselfish and unwavering contribution to the DNO comments forum throughout 2010..

I started seeing the lean on DNO when they started publishing articles from Venezuela which had absolutely nothing to do with D.a and had one objective only which was to embarrass the gov’t.
Further evidence of the lean was when DNO started publishing stories in conjunction with the Q95 talk shows. It was an obvious cycle.
Linton initiates the propaganda in the morning. DNO minutes later publishes this propaganda as news. UWPites and co-conspirators like MOTS, Shirley Allan, TruthLoveAndJustice, Wendy James etc then flood the comment boards all day.
Meanwhile, any DLP supporter who dares to challenge this unholy alliance is subjected to a flood of dislikes, and if ur point is really strong be prepared for some personal attacks and being called retarded, and fool, a beggar who voted for a hand-out.
For whatever reason, DNO admin decided that it was time to go public with this new partnership between DNO and Q95, and this is it right here. I am so disappointed.

I have been looking to DNO for my news since it started because as an overseas based Dominican then, I wanted to be kept abreast with the news in my country. but any one with a trully objective mind cannot deny the fact that DNO has become very political and anti government in some instances. from the so called polls to the biased reporting… I mean come on. DNO has at last come out in the open and demonstrate in no uncertain terms that they have now joined the UWP band wagon.If we look closely at the tone of the recent articles coming fron Admin we can see quite clearly that DNO has lost all of it’s objectivity it had commenced with.
That is an unfortunate development especially when we know for sure that history can show quite clearly that the party they want to come back to run this country(UWP) was an absolute failure when they were in office.

Roosevelt Skerrit was the most talked about person in 2010. I wonder what the talk shows would have been likeif thename Roosevelt skerrit was not involved. Skerrit’s name was in everything. Just try to imagine a subject matter and Skerrit name found its way therein.
Consider the contributionsof Lennox, Matt Angelo, Gabou in Washigton, Clayton in Maryland. Shirley in Atlanta (some say of noteable funerla abseentee fame) et al. What could they have contributed without calling the name of Roosevelt Skerrit? How could they have contributed to national development without calling or blaming everything on Skerrit? How could mr. Gregoire, an astute business run a radio station without making money? is it because like matt? or is ity becuse he is the funel from which the resources (providedby an external source) for upstaging Skerrit flows? How could Sheridan emerge as such a personality without Roosevelt Skerrit. Imagine, even lazy men of the ilk of Dominica’s veteran journalists saw something of value in Skerrit so they could (work) talk and even be considerd for personality of the year. Their only contribution national development is to talk ceaselessly about Skerrit complaining, lamenting 24-7 and at every turn about “loss of democracy”
Whilst i respect the DNO’s choice, i beleive the person who did the most to enmsure that thigs happen in Dominica is Roosevelt Skerrit and so I humbly and respectfully disagree with their choice. .

I am convinced that admin at DNO chose Mr. Gregoire as Personality of the Year in order to drum up viewership and generate clicks on their website… and who can blame them?!
DNO is in the business of providing news stories pertinent to Dominica and Dominicans; but DNO is also in the business of advertising and making money. There is no way that out of all the worthy Dominicans, Mr. Gregoire remains as the only deserving personality to win this title.
As one comment already mentioned, Q95 seeks to fill an obvious void and so the likes of Mr. Linton, Mr. Allen et al will find a home there. This does not speak to Mr. Gregoire’s ingenuity or integrity as a person. How fickle is human memory; Kairi FM was once that alternative voice, but when money talks, BS walks!
Anyway, congratulations to Mr. Gregoire, I do appreciate the role that Q95 plays. An alternative voice is always welcome in true democracy. It is just a pity that Mr. Hector John feels differently

My Personality of the Year is the young 17 year old man, Dennis L Guye, of Castle Comfort. He is the top performer of the Caribbean Secondary Examination Certificate, (CSEC), Exam. He scored nine ones and a two in subjects like chemistry, physics. biology, french, literature, etc. He also had words of advice for young people on how to prepare for exams. He is indeed a role model for young people and a true inspiration, even for older folks like me. My short list includes Denis F Laurent and and K P Rolle who both scored nine ones on the same exams.
I wish these young folks success in their career pursuits and look forward to Mr Guye being the next cardiologist from Dominica. There is hope for the future of Dominica with young people of your caliber.

It’s really sad how much hate and animosity exists in D.a right now. Everything is political, every one has an agenda. Thompson, Gregoire, Linton, Brisbane they all have an agenda.
Thompson has his site Dominican.net, Linton et al have their site HonestDominica or whatever. Their sites have little to no traffic so guess what happened, they carried their campaigns over to DNO and its built-in readership (developed in its more balanced days).
They have taken over the comment boards as well, the same persons bashing Skerrit everyday like they do on Q95. Spreading hatred and division under the guise of promoting democracy.

In case you haven’t noticed fewer and fewer Labourites are posting on DNO since like/dislike and since you UWPites decided to make a concerted effort to take over DNO, becuz no-one was paying attention to y’all sites like HonestDominica.

There is nothing ingenious about positioning Q95 as the alternative in talk radio in the absence of Kairi FM (which once held that position) and free access to DBS radio. It stands to reason that anti-government commentators would flock to the only radio station available for them to express their opinions.
What effort or innovation did it really take from Mr. Gregoire to make that happen?

By your own contention, a void existed on Dominican airwaves for people who held views that some characterize as controversial and may not conform to that of the ruling establishment. These individuals, Dominicans in other words, wanted to be heard and they wanted others to voice their concerns but were incapable of expressing their views on the other radio stations simply because they were contrary to the powers that be. By establishing and continuing to operate Q95, Mr Gregoire filled that void. That is a very important thing in a democracy. Do you despise democracy?

No innovation, radio existed already, but it took effort, financial effort, and a resolve to continue to ensure that an alternative viewpoint is heard.
You fail to realize that this is a fundamental pillar in our democratic society; anything short of that and it would be a dictatorship, and the news you would be getting would be what they want to tell you – also known as propaganda. You prefer that? Do you believe in respecting others’ opinions even if they’re not yours?
I am neither endorsing nor ridiculing DNO’s choice for Personality of the Year, but I will say this – if their criteria for making that decision is based on the determination of Mr Gregoire to maintain an alternative voice in our society, we should commend them and Mr Gregoire. Our discourse has become too polarized in Dominica – it’s a my way or no way mentality. That will doom us.
The key word in my first line was ‘ready made.’
In other words, Mr. Gregoire had to do very little to provide an alternative where people could call a radio station and talk. No more Kairi? We can’t call DBS? Well dammit, let’s turn to Q fm. Duh! What’s so fantastic about that?
My statement was, by the way, meant to be entirely non-partisan. Q95, is not about promoting democracy. Q95 is about forwarding an anti-government position. First it was Kairi and now its Q. Nothing groundbreaking about that. Dominicans would be much better served if we would learn to call and label things for exactly what they are…nothing more.

I am here this first day of the new year listening to Anita Baker’s album” Rupture” so deceided to take a read on DNO to see what’s new.reading these posts on Zandoli i have to add my 25 cents.Anita is like Zandloi she came on the sceen in the 80’s and had huge success and just departed.I later learned she had a son and took time off to care for him only to return last yr.the boy is now a teenager.Zandoli must be doing something different too and too busyand maybe not interested anymore as a result of what it always wrote about came true.The failure to be true to ourselves,the comedy it always mentioned of eddie, Instru etc.Zandoli once said eddie was fickle and DA was crazy to vote these guys into office and it was all a period of madness Da entered into.It was so correct for the madness only worsened.see what we have to and have become.

DNO has clearly lost all controls of their mental faculties. Lennox Linton, Mat Peltier, and Jerry Brisbane as front runners? Whatever you guys are smoking out there you need to stop it because clearly it has clouded your judgement. What have these people done to contribute towards the development of Dominica in 2010? Further from that Sheridan Gregoire? History teachers many things and I am not one to argue ad hominem however, I would point you to the fact that when you make someone personality of the year you try to suggest a person who has at least the morale characteristics to suit a role model. I have to say it seem rather obvious that you are clearly inter incapable of finding someone suited to be personality of the year or this was a random selection from as the rest of the rejects you mentioned. The above list only serves to highlight persons who have tried to fuel instability in the country through the media. This “list” and selection is not worth the web space that it occupies and has robbed the whole personality of the year of its value. I know that you may not publish this as you have proven your biasness time and time again in the post that you publish. However, the spoken word can never be retracted once read.

I am not certain I agree on all counts but the biasness of DNO let alone the incopetence of it news people is a staple. I think the Motto of q95 should be “ALL SHALL SPEACK” because your station epitomizes that very strongly, unlike the other places where the powerful and favored only speak. I am indeed grateful to have had Q95 as a platform to express my thoughts and feelings about my beloved Dominica. Thank you so very much for that. I cannot help asking without Q95 where would Dominica be? and the answer I get to that is in a much worse place..When the history of Dominica is written for the children, the next generation to Dominica, it will reflect the very important rolr you played in guarding and presering our democracy.. Shirley Allen , like Mr. Gregoire has chosen to direct developments in Dominica from a remote spot in a developed North America. Both of them seem to have all the ideas for developing Dominica, yet still they have found sweet “HAVEN” in North America. The use of thje word “HAVEN” denotes rescue and fugitive. Haven from what and from whom?. Even a maternal death in Shirley’s immediate family could not bring her back to DA, but she is intent on directing the affairs of Dominica from her remote base. Like Mr. Austrie said, Dominica is waiting with open arms to welcome them back at Melville Hall. By the way they can now land under the cover of darkness.

I support your choice of man of the year. It is obvious that much consideration was given to your pick. Mr. Gregoire may not be on island but he is providing us with a medium to voice our opinion. DBS radio, KIRI FM and GIS are tools of the government. They give us selected news items and have left much to be desired. Q95 owned by Mr. Gregoire gives us a more balanced approach. Bear in mind that there is never one side to a story. GO Q95 and Mr. Gregoire, we need more persons and institutions which are fearless and fight for democracy to prevail.
Can you honestly put Q-95 and more-balanced in the same sentence? I suppose you would say the same of FOX News!!

As for the personality of the year I nominate the hardest working parl rep – Rayburn Blackmoore for his continuous desire to uplift our roads, ports and air access. He also shows tremendous leadership skills and will be the pm one day.
2nd is the Govt of Dominica for standing strong and delivering in midst of everyday bashing and criticism. I hope the govt continue to work even harder in 2011.
3rd is Lennox Linton – for truth or not he always seems to uncover some things we should know but don’t know.
