DNO POLL (Initial results): Dominicans support introduction of casino gambling

More people support the introduction of casino gambling in Dominica than those who oppose it, according to an ongoing poll by Dominica News Online.

By lunchtime Wednesday a total of 878 people had voted in the survey posted on Monday.

Four hundred and fifty-five of them, or 52 per cent, say they support casino gambling and want to see it introduced.

However 44 per cent – that’s 389, say no to that level of gambling in the country.

The poll is expected to run until the end of the week when DNO will post the final results.

A gaming company is set to open its doors to the public in Dominica this month.

The government is insisting it is not casino gambling, and that only slot machines will primarily be used in the Ma Pau Entertainment operation at Castle Comfort.

I live abroad and honestly i love Dominica, I come in very often to see my mom and siblings, and sometimes if i have something to do. I mean i could fly in like every week cause i can, BUT I rather go elsewhere.

The Minute I land Dominica I get frustrated!!! When i start to think of how totally bored im gonna be in almost COMPLETE darkness!!!

DOMINICA NEEDS RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES ESPECIALLY NIGHT LIFE>>>>>there’s NONE whats so ever.

YOU people just continue to blast everything with negativity and see how far the country will move.

      @ wellsa

What scientific survey did you take to prove you theory Sir?

Your personal view does not make it a fact that has to be imposed on the masses.

There is not no one cure-all for Dominica.

AMEN!!!! At lease i see some people have common sense and see the light. Dominica will not move forward unless we UPGRADE!!!!

I TOTALLY SUPPORT CASIN(strip clubs and Casa blancas too  )

Tourism not all about scenery and adventure…..Nightlife plays a HUGE role in the tourism industry. Dominica doesn’t have a night life, therefore stay over tourist are not encouraged to come over. They want to go the the bars/clubs/casinos after a fun day in the jungle. Not stay home during those hella dark nites.

Have you guys realized how Dark Dominica is….I flew over Dominica at about 5AM once and totally missed the island. NEVER SAW it. First step the government needs to do is put up a GREAT deal of lamp poles- LET THERE BE LIGHT.

Then make the operation of businesses such as casinos LEGAL. Stop being so hypocrite, not because there are casinos mean that someone is bound to go gamble. So what if they does anyway…every man for himself on judgement day.

In reference to crime, crime will always rise, because the young ones are not taught any better by their parents, because babies are having babies and parents choose to be their child’s friend instead of the PARENT. Then with the lack of jobs on the island and people being so eager to become technologically advanced (Blackberry+Ipad)….they steal cause they were not taught better and they have no money.So…….what we need to do is to build a better prison,impose/reinstate strict laws and shake up the lazy Police Departments, there will ALWAYS be crime so we just have to be able to control it and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Just imagine how many jobs would be created if Dominica “gets updated”. Youth being employed, helping themselves and family therefore increasing the standard of life in Dominica.

Dominicans are just so negative its a shame, EVERY TIME some sort of project/action to be carried out to take Dominica out of this “prehistoric times” they speak utter rubbish!!!! Thats why the place is not moving forward- BECAUSE NOTHING GETS DONE!!!

And what burns me the most, is that the people who talk this rubbish and poison the public (WEAKones) are the people who have large establishments, well educated, have rights in other countries and so forth. Leading the dumb/blind sheep to destruction while they enjoy their own lives and can easily relocate if the need to.

C’mon Skerrit, Hurry up make it legal, lets get ball rolling.

Many people are support casino gambling without any proper stuidy being conducted as to its potential impact on the masses.

the sas thing is that is mainly locals that are gonna get trapped into this casino whirlpool.

It is rather paradoxical trhe maany of the people who are against international airport are the very ones who support casinos, casinos do better with int airports on small destinations like ours. otherwise is only local mony it will; vacuum to pump out of dominica.

Form of what investment? The poor getting poorer? Who is going to profit from the investment? Have the slot machines in the hotels so the visitors can leave their money before they leave for home.

oh boy, oh boy, oh boy; i mean, really, the majority of Dominicans CANNOT afford the high prices of the basic neccessities in that country! So, why would the government support something so detrimental to a small population with little disposable income? that is crazy!! I can imagine families really spiraling in poverty, because the urge to “get more” will actually be the youths, men and women gambling away food/rent/bus fare/electricty money!! As always, I do not expect more from our PM; he simply lacks the mental capability to govern a country, and a heart to think of the consequences of such actions. I’ll be waiting to comment when he legalizes prostitution.

Bad idea. Is Dominica going to become another Atlantic City New Jersey. People gamble away there pay checks at the end of the day they look like zoombies walking the streets. Around the casinos look o.k, but you should see where the people live. It’s like living homeless all your life. Casinos are badddddddddddddddddddddd.

  7. March 14, 2012

I think this will bring some form of revenue to the country. The Prime Minister will just have to increase security. 8) :-o

Jobs someone has to deal the cards, someone has to be head of the security, someone has to install the security, someone has to look at the cameras, someone has to run the roulette wheel, someone has to oversee the poker games, someone has to change cash into chips. Whoever is foolish enough to gamble away their salary could easily be foolish enough to blow it on something else, just because the option is there doesn’t mean you have to take it. YOUR ACTIONS ARE YOURS. I say yes to casinos, strip clubs, multiplexes and shopping malls. More jobs it creates, the better. Is those same people who were saying no when clear harbor was coming to town. Now clear harbor is probably the second largest single entity employer after the government.

On a matter of such weighty significance and profound implications for the country, DNO could be more socially responsible and conduct a scientific poll whose results would be more reliable and representative of the core values of this country.
For DNO to simply invite its readers to declare their support or disagreement with casino gambling and the publish the results without the benefit of scientific analysis, and without the benefit of a larger sampling pool, is clearly irresposible, and should I say, misleading.
The ordinary man on the strreet hearing that a DNO poll concludes that casino gambling has majority support in the country, would be conned into believing what he has just read.
On a mattrer of immeasurable national import DNO has an obligation to repeat in bold capital letters that the poll was not scientific and its results should not be relied upon in forming an opinion about the level of support for casino gambling in Dominca.
To not do so would be tantamount to deceiving the public, plain and simple.

    • T. Winston
      March 15, 2012

News flash John, A poll is a survey which is in fact a scientific analysis tool. DNO’s research is quite scientific as it has pooled a user group and compiled results based on computer IPs. Whether this scientific analysis is reliable is another question entirely as “diaspora” can vote as well however the methodology is indeed scientific. Maybe a more fair approach would be “DNO readers believe that Dominica should have a casino”

again I am saying have regulation in place that locals should or will not be able to go to the casino more than one time per month. For tourists I have no problem with that but put regulations in place first that the locals cannot become addicts. The casino’s in St. Maarten about 12 for a 37 suqre miles island are frequented 95 % by locals. People are getting kicked from their homes, children are left without food or unifoms so cannot attend school.Sometimes they leave their children outside the casino’s or in the cars in the hot sun for hours and forget they are outside. Young women are prostituting themselves because they are addicts, they go to the casino’s straight from work with their uniforms, police officers, immigrations officers commiting fraud and bribery all because they are addicts people stealing from their workplace, last year a young man from Dominica committed susicide because he did not pay his rent for 3 months stole from his job lost that money also saw no way out and drank poision. I can go and on…. I am hoping and praying Dominica do not turn that way also.

You can’t put a law restricting the number of times someone goes to a casino; if it’s opened, it’s opened to everyone any time they like… So the question is just whether or not one should be opened.

  14. Is Gambling or not?
    March 14, 2012

DNO and the people of Dominica, are you all surprised? Just read the unadulterated, nonsensical spewings. Slot Casino Gambling will bring money to the country. IT will improve the Tourism business. Why is almost all of Europe with gambling facilities for decades facing huge financial problems? Why is poverty on the rise in many countries with slot Casino gambling? Dominica’s Tourism brand must be unique. The Nature Isle brand is being crucified, mashed up. It cannot be developed like that of St. Marteen.

My people, in case you did not know, it has been proven, there are facts and evidence to prove, that Slot Casino Gambling and money-laundering go hand in hand. It is a haven for criminals, drug barons to “Wash” their dirty money. Who is serious about fighting Money-laundering? Slot Gambling is another avenue, another opportunity t for the money-launderers. Is so Dominica come?

Google ‘Slot gambling and money-laundering’ Please read for your self. But DNO isn’t really gambling, nuh? So why did the PM try to distort people’s minds and make that false statment that Slot Casino Gambling is not gambling? Check Wikipeda and Dominicans read the real meaning of that Slot Casino Gambling. Are Dominicans being told the truth? Why is the PM trying to defend Slot Casino Gambling at Krazy kokonuts?

Shouldn’t his emphasis be on creating wealth from our natural resources? That that is job creation, nuh? That that is economic development, nuh? Slot Casino Gambling in Krazy Kokonuts? That will decrease poverty and increase Dominicans’ standard of living? Of course, a few will benefit big time.

I prefer to be right with three (3) than to be wrong with a thousand (1000). Jesus Christ would be rebuked in Dominica today for denouncing Slot Casino Gambling. He did chase the gamblers away with rope, remember? But because so many are spiritually dead, their God is different, they find nothing wrong in Slot Casino gambling. Dominicans are fail to see further than the tip of their noses.

OMG I hope there will be strict rules enforced as to how often locals can visit the casino’s. I am a resident of St. Maarten where there is a bad gambling epedemic. Families are being destroyed, I am a victim of losing everything I owned because my spouse was an addict, down to my child cashpan he opened and stole the coins to gamble. My children are being rasied without a father because he could not live in St. Maarten anymore he had to move back to Dominica to see if he can fight that demon. Gambling addicts are worst than drug addicts there is no limit as to how much they can gamble in one night. Just a drive up fronstreet in the evening you will see countless Dominicans nationals outside the casino’s looking like zombies after they have lost all their paychecks. Lord I hope this will be regulated. Open a rehad for gamblers at the same time because that will surely be needed !!!

I see Nothing wrong with slot machines. Crime is caused when ignorant individuals become idle and greedy individuals become greedier. Parents need to stand up to their kids like they used to and the Dominican Govt needs to develop stricter and harsher penalties for criminals of all kinds. You cannot avoid development because some worthless, reckless fools decide to act like mongrels.

But of course we support it. In this day and age, it is hypocritical to believe that the introduction of casino gambling will be detrimental to our society. The economy can benefit substantially with these operations.

My boss is a member of a committee which oversee the impact of casino operations on the local population in a certain neighboring country. I can report here that the overall feedback is all positive. Job creation, stimulation of the economy…you name it. Also worth mentioning is the operational and governmental fees…..it is astonishing how much these casinos have to pay for licensing here… and guess what…it is chicken peas for them. They don’t care how much it is, they know they gonna make it back in a couple of months.

So bring in on….it will help the hotel industry, boost the level of guest willing to overnight in Dominica as well.

To Namich2008: Who is going to benefit from the casino? Yes, a few people will get jobs but how much so? Yes the gevernment fees are high and they don’t feel it.
Who is going to go to the casino? It’s the locally who will be in the casino.

I live in St. Maarten where there is twelve casino and although St. Maarten is a yourist based destination, there’s more local inside of the casino than the tourist.
Some parents paychecks stays in the casino. most play the slot machine and bingo. These are the same people who cannot pay their rent or feed the cchildren cause they gamble their paycheck.
