‘Dollar Day’ slated for Friday

The $1 coin as it looks at present

The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development announces Friday June 5 as Dollar Day in all Dominican schools.

Dollar Day is held annually when each child can make a contribution of at least one dollar to the Education Trust Fund.

The Education Trust Fund was established in 1981 through an act of parliament to assist students experiencing difficulty attending secondary school. Monies obtained through fundraising efforts assist with the purchase of books, transportation, and registration and exam fees.

The Government of Dominica provides a yearly subvention to the fund.

The British did not leave D/ca voluntarily. They were not wanted and actually were thrown out of D/ca. Despite that, I am certain the ruling government then received a substantial sum of money from the British. How much and what was it used for?(The Real Facts).

You need to get your fallacious facts correct before you talk nonsense, which are out right lies!

Nobody forced, nor chase the British out of Dominica. The British, decided to sever all ties with the colonies of the Caribbean, from Jamaica in the North to British Guyana in the South America, and British Honduras in South Central America. Trinidad & Tobago was the first to become independent followed by Jamaica! They went into independence without first attaining Statehood!

Antigua was the first Island the British forced into Statehood, followed alphabetically, and told the islands they will manage their internal affairs for five years, while Britain retain responsibility for our external affairs and defense.

Prior to that they forced us into a West Indian Federation, with Trinidad being the Capital of the West Indies, that failed okay! The British simply did not want to have anything to do with us any longer. The only two colonies they retained to this day in the Caribbean; are Montserrat, and the Island of Tortolla.

And the reason the kept them is because the British said their population was too small to let them go! If you are about to say something, and you do not know exactly what you are talking about it would be better to refrain rather than talking lies!

I’ll inform you this, they gave us an ultimatum, and that was whether or not we could manage for ourselves at the end of the five years, we had to accept our independence!

The man who took Dominica through Statehood, and ultimately into Independence, is yet alive; He is Patrick John, if I am not correct Patrick John is the man to see for verification, I am sure he can authenticate what I wrote, he knows the truth,…

Somebody need to ask him! If Dominicans chased Britain from Dominica, that means all of the islands in the Caribbean chased them away!

No politician, and people in the Caribbean from Jamaica in the North, to Guyana in the South, and British Honduras in South America fought, to fight for no independence, as some in Dominica claimed, even Skerrit, when he said Pirie Charles and Rosie Douglas fought a lot of things; independence was handed to us. Refrain from spreading false propaganda

All the politicians should donate also, why give idle politicians so much money each month and still ask children to donate money,,most of the kids parents are struggling every day to survive ,giving away $1.00 might be alot for some parents,if the gov’t wants lap top to be used at school they should supply them like most developed countries.there is a lap top room so that the kids can use it when necessary,by asking each child to provide their own i am sure some will be left out,,food is more important than a lap top when families are going through hard times..at list each politician can offer a lap top to schools i think this is a very good gesture…if wealthy countries are supplying laptops for children why should an under-developed country ask parents donation?it does not make any sense.

I honestly don’t see what the big fuss is about. You just said that its a donation which by its very nature means that if you cannot afford it then you will not be forced to pay it. It has to be an unforced contribution from the heart from people who can afford it. Granted some parents will say that they can’t afford it, but you will see them at every triple-k gig buying rounds of drinks for their friends.

You lot complain too much for over anything. Every year in the UK we have Red Nose Day where every child has to bring in a £1 (4 times more than a $1) to contribute towards under privilege kids around the world. Then there was the Nepal appeal where the kids donated £0.20p or £0.50p by buying 2 cup cakes. I just think it is outrageous and appalling for those negative comments. Kids are brought into this world but its not there fault that trials lay ahead I just think as a parent with love for your own then your heart should bleed with comparison to help those kids. Is $1 going to make you poor? If you don’t have it then fine but don’t complain, come on be serious. Personally, I think this is a fantastic idea we all need help sometimes.

Mon, this is not red nose day in the U.K., which I know very well also. This action in Dominica is organised by a Govt. Ministry, totally different! If Dominica wants to have its own red nose appeal I will contribute gladly, provided the P.M. will participate by buying and wearing a red nose first. After all it is red!

Dominica with the u.k is not comparable ,dominica is an under-developed little island with less than 100,000 and the u.k about 60 million and developed ,from the age of 17 ,someone can ask for job seekers allowance, either if they are looking for a job or pretending that they are looking for a job,you have housing benefit in u.k gov’t is not giving any money to help pay house rent in dominica ,in u.k you never pay to go to the doctor, free medicin for people who are not working.handicaps get money ,people pretending that they are sick get money ,alot are being caught sometimes, sometimes they cannot pay back they have well used the money or hide it away,no parent, not even the jobless get money from the gov’t in D.A,worker on low pay,,no help for handicaps nor any specialized school ,,books are free for some kids in u.k ,food banks give free food, shoes, clothes, food are cheaper ,meat and fish are cheaper in the afternoon, you can buy 2kg and pay the price of 1KG, dominican parent…

I think that this idea should be expanded to every Dominican on the face of the earth. The Ministry of Education should set up a PayPal account to facilitate these donations. Just think: would it be $150,000 or more? Every year each Dominican would feel proud of making a contribution to the Fund.

I not giving no patat dollars for any child while those corrupt people at the top swimming in our money and those imbicil laborites supporting them.
I not wasting my money on anybody in Dominica…. especially if its a Labour Party supporter.

It is a wise idea. I would even suggest monthly or quarterly. I would also request and institute the same for adults since some of them are the biggest critiques while they are doing nothing to help Dominica.
Any ruling government would receive my endorsement. Children must learn at a young age to give something to society. It is wise to teach them accordingly.
Consider the population of D/ca and what $1.00 can purchase in this era – very little. Collectively, the accumulated amount could greatly assist to achieve some goals for projects. Nationals would feel proud that they are assisting their country. Prouder yet of what could be done with the amount of money. In the long run D/ca could really become Independent.
The government is trying to do its utmost and some of you continue to criticize. Should you not be ashamed?
Only the narrow-minded, wicked and cheap-skate ones who love to criticize and comment for the sake of doing so would object.

The intention is good for the kids, maybe it will help them from not begging the Chinese for help they must do things them selves as Black people. Fellers take a look at the big picture for the future of the black kids stop the politics. Always look for results for the future of Black people. The reason why we are stuck in a rot the British did not teach us how to think. Lets all teach our kids to think and not be proffesional beggers like us.

The sale of ONE passport…just ONE could be a major boost towards financial assistance for the less fortunate students. My heart breaks for Dominica.

    June 4, 2015

I’m sorry but this is truly pathetic. Our top guys flying first class and staying in five star hotels and a senior government servant walking into a bank with $1.5 million cash to deposit, allegedly from passport sales and you are asking all students to contribute 1 Dollar? Maybe the intention is good but timing is awfully wrong and and naive.

    • Francisco Telemaque
      June 4, 2015

If that in the quote above is correct, that person should be in jail: because a million dollars are not easily come by. If the government is aware that a civil servant, or whatever they are now called in Dominica has that amount of money to deposit at one time, or during the tenure of employment in the civil service, the government should investigate that person, to find out the source of that money.

In America if someone walked into any bank with that amount of money to deposit at one time, unless they are know to be merchant or are in some sort of business to generate that amount of money, they will not accept it.

In the first place nobody can simply walk into Banks here and say I want to open an account without producing at leas three pieces of identification, and their pay stub from their place of employment, or a license to operate a fictitious business, on in that persons name.

Drug dealers save their money in a hole in the ground!

Where are their parents to pay for school for their kids? Why are we begging some one to solve our problems. After the British left the only thing they teach us in school was History and how to be proffesional beggers. You made the child its your responsibility to buy them lab tops not the Government job to do that. The country have to much beggers and Lazy people doing nothing. All the good land is sitting idle.

Prior to making futile comments and judgment, you must know the truth and state it. While at it, be fair in your comments.
Where were you when D/ca received Statehood and became Independent? It’s leader at that time and those who approved of it caused D/ca to secede from the British. It was not without disapproval of some D/cans and much unrest. If you were old enough, an adult when this occurred, you could have been among the disapproving ones and the melee which occurred then.
The British did not leave D/ca voluntarily. They were not wanted and actually were thrown out of D/ca. Despite that, I am certain the ruling government then received a substantial sum of money from the British. How much and what was it used for?
Since you have so much to state more con than pro, maybe you would like to query it.
Do you have an idea who was primarily responsible for this? You should know whom. If you do not know, perform a research into it.

“The British did not leave D/ca voluntarily. They were not wanted and actually were thrown out of D/ca”

That is the biggest lie ever told!

Look even when some people were burning, and trample on our new Dominica flag, in Goodwill, and arguing that Dominica has nothing for us to go into independence, and insists Patrick not take Dominica into independence, he told the people, there is nothing we can do.

The British are the one who do not want to deal with us any longer, whether we want independence or not we had to accept it. That is what our history should read and not the lies you are perpetrating.

Lot of Dominicans still remember Patrick John for allowing the Defense Force to fire on the people, but that should not a reason to deny him the credit he deserves, and the truth from him before he die, because people like you are distorting the truth!

Mr. Farmer, it is always good to do some good to help the unfortunate, there are parents all over the world who have children and just cannot afford to give their children everything they should have and that includes cloth, and books for going to school.

It is not a bad thing they are doing: Let me tell you something, Wesley has produced lots of very educated people, if I mention some names people old enough will know who they are/were. Nevertheless, I was one of them when I soil my cloth in school, by the time I got home after 3:00 P.M. my grandmother had to wash and dry them in the night, wake early in the morning to iron them so that I could be ready for class at 9:00 A.M.

I doubt life is still as difficult as it once were, nevertheless there are plenty of people in our country who desperately need financial help, if you are in a position to help a child in need I suggest you help! This is where God will bless you, and not the red clinic.

Even in the United States, and…

If you believe Francisco Telemaque is a idiot, think again! The dollar day was in existence perhaps long before Skerrit was born. That Mountain Chicken, Chicken Skerrit with his mountain chicken brain, and mentality could not have thought of a program of such importance!

By the way, I just found out they have, and eat mountain chicken in Louisiana, perhaps that’s what Skerrit went there to eat, and eat so much of it that is why he could not graduate college

Seriously though, the are simply called Todd Frog in Louisiana, and I am going there this summer to get some: I will eat all so that when Mr. Crappoo prime minister goes back to Louisiana to hunt his brother frogs will be all gone!

Nonsense!!! When i went to Salisbury school back in the day, teachers such as Miss Mary and Teacher Robin (now deceased) initiated something called a “Hot Pepper Sauce Drive” (hope I got the name right) through which we were producing, bottling and selling pepper sauce and using the proceeds to do various things for the school. It taught as various skills, discipline and financial savvy. I see absolutely nothing wrong in initiatives such as these.

OK so where are the scholarships that are needed for our students? Where are the tablets for every student that was promised at the election? I suggest that the people who are in charge of Dominica cannot take the money they are making with them when they die! Please start looking after the school children, young adults and students that are the future of Dominica and spend your ill gotten gains on helping promote their education. Give something back to Dominica. You each and everyone know who you are. Look into your souls and start helping our people in Dominica.

There is too much talking, criticisms and no action on the part of those as you who consistently criticize.
Maybe you could consider doing your part as a patriotic Dominican and, as each one reaches one, encourage others to do likewise. This would be helpful, far more than never- ending criticisms which serve no useful purpose.
