Vice President of the Cancer Society, Vena Royer, has reported that a couple from Boston has generously responded to calls for assistance.

Sylvaine and Thomas Lestrade presented a check of over US$2,000 to the society on Tuesday

“I am happy to report that people in the diaspora are responding to our appeal for assistance for cancer patients. We launched the walk for Cancer Care in July and I was fortunate to find a couple in Boston who were quite eager to take up the challenge,” she told reporters.

Royer expressed heartfelt thank you to the couple for their donation. According to her the money will go toward payment of chemotherapy and radiation for cancer patients.

She added that the gesture by the Lestrades is testimony that people are becoming more aware of the need for greater financial assistance for cancer patients.

“I want to just send out the appeal to other persons out there who may wish to make a contribution you are always welcomed you can always contact us and we will be happy to acknowledge your gift to share with those persons who are waiting for help,” she stated.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit recently announced that financial assistance has been approved for seven cancer patients to travel abroad for further treatment. Royer indicated that these patients are currently in Guyana undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.

“I am so happy that we’re getting funding for those people, they are already in Guyana,” Royer said. “Thank God that we have a very good relationship with the institution in Guyana and they could trust us, reach out to us and help us. They have already started their treatment we have already paid part of the money and we are hoping that government will complement what we have done.”

The Society is taking advantage of the ongoing Creole in the Park activities where they are offering free breast screening for Dominicans at the Roseau Health Center.

Keep the fight on don’t give up courageous women there are so many women out there who needs the help and don’t seek it the stigma is still in our society that having cancer is a secret we need to brake out of this mind frame.

    Such a pretty picture!

The battle begins in the mind. Your are fighters! Your smiling faces reflect your confident attitude.

The Cancer Society is perhaps the most vibrant non-governmental organization on the island. You do great work and touch so many lives. No surprise you attract such wonderful support from all over. Your kudos are so well-deserved…

Thanks to T&S Lestrade for their contributions. More in the diaspora should follow this good example.

@ St Joe the contributions didn’t come for T & S wallets. They solicited money from Dominicans abroad and made one contribution. So what more you want from the Diaspora. More importantly ask yourself “what have I done?or “am I doing to help”? Some of you to fast.

Nice job Sylvanne and Tommy!!! Your hearts are in the right place and I know you would not even want to be recognized like that. But honor has to be given to whom honor is due. Enjoy DA for me and you.
