Dominica holds workshop on Competition Law and Policy

Prevost hopes the workshop will strengthen consumer protection

The Ministry of Trade, Energy, and Employment is conducting a one-day workshop on Competition Law and Policy.

According to Research Economist of the CARICOM Competition Commission (CCC), and facilitator of the workshop, Rommell Hippolyte, the workshop is “a one-day introductory session, aimed at exposing participants to the basic concepts relating to competition law.”

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade, Energy, and Employment, Careen Prevost, underscored that the workshop will focus on the main elements of new and evolving competition regimes.

“We have seen the need to create an awareness of the benefits to customers, and the economy of free and unfettered competition practices,” she said. “This time, focus will be placed on the main elements of the emerging and evolving competition regimes in CARIFORUM, and the relationships between the various institutions and courts of the region, where the implementation of those regimes are concerned.”

Prevost mentioned the establishment of a unit within the Ministry of Trade, responsible for consumer affairs. The unit, she said, has been working towards the establishment of a legal and administrative framework, for engaging competition-related issues in Dominica.

She expressed her hope that the workshop will help strengthen consumer protection.

“We do hope that at the end of this project, we will see a more robust consumer protection network, we will see legislation in place, and we will also see a strengthened Consumer Protection Unit within the Ministry of Trade,” she stated.

The CCC is responsible for promoting and maintaining fair competition within CARICOM, for the enhancement of economic efficiency and consumer welfare.

Dominica signed on to the CARIFORUM EU IPA on October 15, 2008.

The Ministry is talking about promoting competition. Apparently, it does not apply to government procurement in major projects. The government keeps contradicting itself, deliberately so.

I think Roosevelt Skerrit should attend that so he can learn about fair competition for tendering government projects.

Dear Mrs. Careen, as someone that I know personally I’ll take it easy on you. For someone that was brought up as a seventh Day Adventist, even though your mother is from Bense and you were raised in St. Joseph, much like Kelva (the St. Joe palrep), you had no business jumping on that labor bandwagon and support this evil regime. You could have voted who you want but that doesn’t mean you have to partake and drink from their cup. God is not pleased. Separate yourself at once from this lamblike beast. Repent and be baptized in the name of the true living king Jesus Christ and stop following this self-proclaimed demigod whose most beloved asset is a fake doctorate. After witnessing you attain a REAL degree at the Caribbean union college in Trinidad, it’s sad to see what you have now become. It’s true that the future is indeed unpredictable and only God knows it. Time to come to your past senses Careen

You well broke and struggling to make ends meet where you be there. Look at the kind of “winner’s” life Skeritt giving all you Dominicans. Most of you mal-travay and holding onto Skeritt’s tip of his skirt for all you to survive. The few of all you that have a house all you getting old and grey before you finish pay for it. My word, so much for your winner’s life. He have all you like Tarzan in the jungle. You speculating from a far while I do know careen for real. I was at C.U.C. in Trinidad with her in the mid to late 1990’s. I can tell you everything about her from head to toe but that won’t be necessary. Resort to begging from the red clinic for the small mercies Skeritt have passing around if you fall short on cash. That’s what the average donkey like you call the good life

This shows the sad state of politics in Dominica today. It’s not enough simply to disagree and explain why, one must literally demonise the other side, including this sort of ridiculous pseudo-religious rhetoric.

“Floridian” It might be too late for careen, Like in the “Matrix” she has chosen to swallow the “Red” pill instead of the blue one, while washing down, drinking the “red” koolaid from the DLP chalice. Now she is in a twilight zone, control by, the evil “DR Supremo” She has taken a “Leftist” turn, to the Dark side. Becoming the doctor, herald, of the “NEP” and fantasy, cabal, world of “DR Supremo” hoping to wake up one day

We have so many meetings and conferences it no surprise we have so many civil servants to make sure we have enough people to attend them. At least they get free lunch there, which is a bonus when you do not earn enough to buy your own.
