Dominica lends a helping hand as floods devastate Venezuela

Dominica is making a contribution to relief efforts in Venezuela where floods have caused widespread destruction, killed more than 30 people and left more than 100,000 people homeless.

On Saturday morning, December 11, Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit is scheduled to make a presentation to the Ambassador of Venezuela to Dominica during a presentation ceremony at the Embassy of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela on Bath Road in Roseau.

A press advisory also states that PDV Caribe Dominica Ltd will join the Venezuelan Embassy in accepting “dry goods donations from the public towards relief efforts following death and displacement of Venezuelans due to torrential rain”.

According to a BBC news report, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has announced that he will govern temporarily from a tent given to him by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi so that families made homeless by recent floods can take refuge in his office.

The BBC says 25 families are already living in the palace after losing their homes.

The news report further says the “Venezuelan leader has been personally supervising relief efforts in response to the floods”.

Landslides have swept away many houses but according to the BBC, Chavez has promised a massive home-building programme “and on Friday appointed culture minister Francisco Sesto to the new role of minister for reconstruction in Caracas”.

Its a good move to help people, especially when affected by natural disasters.

But Chavez must overstand to that he is giving so much in Housing to others, why not having
something put aside for wet days. He has to even house about 25 families in the palace.
    Is nice he nice so.

Look to he other side of Chavez…can you imagine Clinton or even Obama allowing regugees to shelter in the White House during/after a national emergency? Can you imagine that being done in Zimbabwe also? It may be a publicity stunt, but there is tremendous good coming out of it.

Clinton or Obama does not have to house regugees in the White House because the American Government always plan things are budget/ plan. There are different agencies to call and within 24hrs you receive a check (cheque).

      America has enough shelters.

Who are you kidding. Remember Hurricane Catrina.

A cheque within 24 hours, wow. I hope the victims of Catrina have received their cheques.

No country is properly prepared for a natural disaster.

Why should obama let refugees stay in the white house when you have RFK stadium down the block that hold 56,500 and can extend to 80,000 people? You guys come on this website and talk so much crap it’s not funny. I am surprise you guys not blaming Skerrit for the flood and death toll. Keep turning everything into politics and write negative stuff about the USA and other countries and the leader of said country. Keep praying nothing happens to Dominica and you Dr No.

Domincans! Allu WHINE too much – A typical trait of a BABY – whining and more whining – when will u guys grow up and differentiate between a time of need and a time of want? I will repost my reply to “fed up dominican” below.

Politics is obviously the centrality of everything or every action to Dominicans. These people fail to see past their noses due to the political veil they placed over their faces. As an addition to “Fed up Dominican” point above about being a christian – it has everything to do with HELPING THE LESS FORTUNATE. Ironically, even in the absence of a disaster, Dominicans look to get assistance from other countries – yet in a time of devastation such as this they complain when Dominica gives back. How sad, very sad my people.

Only babies whine. Grow up please and stop all that noise.

Aye some people are really insensitive. These are fellow human beings and we need to remember it can happen to us also. That comment about skerrit and his allowance is just ridiculous. You should be ashamed and display some sympathy to the people who are suffering

    Great move!!

All our supermarkets that may not realize high sales for Christmas should get ready to sell most of their dry goods at a discount to the government who in turn would ship it to Chavez.

You and that businessman would become friends again boy. All his stock would sell.

Mister would turn around and say to the masses: the prime minister and I were never enemies. I was only vex to see after I had placed so much of my resources into their earlier campaigns I got left out from all d good time.

Does it matter what the relationship between Skeritt and Chavez is.

NO what matters is that human beings are in need and we should do what we can to help ease their suffering.

If anyone is going to submit negative comments, may be they should stop and think first. Lets pray this never happens to Dominica. Remember this is a natural disaster and natural disasters can happen anytime, anywhere.

Dominicans are always saying that Dominica is a christian country, full of god fearing people. Part of being a good christian is helping others.
