Dominica has been ranked ninth among CARICOM countries in human development, according to statistics released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The annual Human Development Index (HDI) ranking is worked out by combining indicators of life expectancy, educational attainment and income in 187 countries around the globe.

Then it is used as a summary measure for assessing long-term progress in three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.

Globally Dominica was ranked at 93, in the report which was released in Tokyo, Japan on Thursday.

According to the document, Dominica’s Human Development Index (HDI) value stands at 0.717 with life expectancy at 77.7.

Dominica’s Gross National Income (GNI) per capita is US$9,234.74, according to the report.

The GNI for the Bahamas, which ranked number one in CARICOM countries, is US$21,414.27.

In terms of the HDI ranking, Dominica is doing better than just four CARICOM countries: Jamaica (96), St. Lucia (97), Suriname (100), Guyana (121).

Below is the full ranking of CARICOM countries, with global ranking in brackets:

1.The Bahamas (51)
2.Barbados (59)
3.Antigua and Barbuda (61)
4.Trinidad and Tobago (64)
5.St. Kitts and Nevis (73)
6.Grenada, 79;
7.Belize (84)
8.St. Vincent and the Grenadines (91)
9.Dominica (93)
10.Jamaica (96)
11.St. Lucia (97)
12.Suriname (100)
13.Guyana (121)

In the report the top five countries ranked in terms of the HDI are Norway, Australia, Switzerland, Netherlands and the US.

The bottom five in this ranking are Niger, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Chad and Sierra Leone.

Overall, the report paints a bleak picture of human development around the globe, noting that there has been a slow down over the past few years.

According to the report the slowdown in human development is a result of the lingering global economic crisis that has caused a dip in income growth in Europe, Arab countries, and Central Asia.

Natural disasters and conflicts have also caused a dent in the improvement of human development, the report said.

Not surprise at all. WE have so much to offer in DA and every morning ob G98.7 the station geared towards the Caribbean community here in Toronto is constantly promoting Dominica. The only time Ive heard Dominica mentioned is when is when the Dominican Canadian Association went in for the pledge for the flooding that occurred last year and that’s it. NO one is promoting the island. WHERE is our tourism minister, what is he doing??? St.Lucia, Antigua, Grenada, Trinidad, Jamaica and Barbados are constantly promoting their countries but not DA wake up the country has potential and that’s why I rather give back by visiting and spending in my country wake up.

Not Surprise, while our seniors are struggling to have a good quality of life after working hard all their life and our youth are struggling to get employment the government is accepting new immigrants and overpopulating the island. There is so much opportunity for development but it seems like the government just cares about their pockets and lifestyle. Whats worse is having certain individual that are so fixed in their way that they cant envision bigger and better things. Not surprise at all.

Observing for a distance, my one pressing hope is for substantial improvement in the healthcare system. There seem to be a serious concern regarding incidents of cancer on the island that is not being address. What has the Ministry of Health done to discover and address the cause of cancer deaths on Dominica? I recently read online about the passing of 33 year old Aisha Mark. A life expectancy of 77.7 in a time of tremendous advances in healthcare is not acceptable. Too many folks I have known have passed on before reaching the age of 50.

In the article, DNO said “In terms of the HDI ranking, Dominica is doing better than just four CARICOM countries: Jamaica (96), St. Lucia (97), Suriname (100), Guyana (121”

Is that really so because if you look at Jamaica’s data closely, they have provided more data on the indicators than Dominica, therefore the unavailable of certain data could mean that Dominica’s ranking could be lower.

For example, if we take a look at the data that was not available for Dominica as compared to the data that was available for Jamaica could indicate that Dominica’s position could be worse if the data was available and included in the ranking.

    Indicators Dominica Jamaica
    Data Data
    Population in multidimensional poverty (%) N/A N/A
    Gender Inequality Index N/A 0.457
    Inequality-adjusted HDI (IHDI) N/A 0.579
Employment to population ratio N/A 65.3
Net migration rate (per 1000 population) N/A -5.8

From the above data, we see that more indicators were measured for Jamaica and was included in their overall ranking, whereas the same data was not available for Dominica and could not be measured so was not part of Dominica’s rankings.

But what really caught my eye is the data for certain indicators that were not available for Dominica which included, Poverty, Employment, Migration and Inequality.

Is that a coincidence or the government could not make these data available because it would contradict their position on these indicators.

One more observation, Dominica went down by 1 as compared to last year’s ranking (92) , therefore we are doing worse now than in previous ranking. The lower the country’s ranking, the better.

    Ko- ki-yo- ko!

Only “CHANGE” will bring relief to the disaster we are about to experience with the Skerrit regime . Those who keep saying “I love my PM weee,” have more to lose because of their ignorance and tolerance in the governance of the country.

What we have is a bunch of radicals who care less about the future of the children, and decide to rule by all means while they continue to get exceedingly wealthy @ the expense of the poor. I bet you that no other country in the OECS, or the Caribbean would tolerate what’s taking place in Dominica today.

It seems like every Laborite only cares about their interests and to Hell with country. They accept the lies, deceits and corruption at the highest level. They allow a few despicable lawyers to control the police and judiciary, they are very happy with the continued victimization of their brothers and sisters who disagree with the governance of the country. Something is very wrong about the mentality of Dominicans.

Oh Dear! The P M keeps telling us that the island is doing well under his ministry; but how can this be true when all the indications confirm that our island is bottom of the barrel?

People, if we love our country and our people we must stop the permanent demise of our country. And we can only do that by voting Skeritt and his merry men out of office.

Please use your vote to save Dominica before it is too late to do so.

Where on earth have you heard of a Hospital being closed down because of termite infestation? Maybe in a remote part of Africa? This should have been brought to the international press!!!! Well it occurred under Roosevelt Skerrit’s leadership as PM of poor Commonwealth of Dominica. So how then can our Human Development Index exceed that of our neighbours?. When we have a misfit governing the Ministry of Finance like Skerrit who described 0.5% growth as ROBUST, YOU HAVE TO ASK YOURSELF IF Skerrit really knows the meaning of robust. SHAME ON YOU SKERRIT!!! With our Foreign Direct Investment being one of the lowest in the region, how then can our Human Development Index compete with that of our neighbours? With the education system in limbo, what do we expect of our Human Development Index?. Can Petter Pepper even pronounce the word “student”?
THE SOLUTION IS TO KICK THE SCAMPS OUT AT THE NEXT ELECTION!!!!!! THEY ARE A GANG OF NO GOODS!!!!!!

Skeritt is not doing anything that the greedy, selfish and corrupt Dominicans do not want. They are the ones who keep voting him in.

The time is fast approaching when those terrible people will be asked to account for their contribution to the dire state of our country.

Dominica is fast converting into a dictatorship. Even those cruel supporters will be affected when the transformation is complete.

I am not surprised at the ranking. I know that the economy is not doing well, because Skerrit is not being properly advised by his huge team of advisers.
Skerrit my brother these are some of the things that your so called Labour Party supporters and advisers are not telling you:
    1. a delayed election is NOT working in your favour(since you are the government).
    2. Everyday people are leaving or defecting from the Labour Party.
    3. UWP votes are not going anywhere. They are just increasing.
    4. You just surrendered Roseau North to Danny Lugay. This is a seat that you could ILL AFFORD TO LOSE! Ahuge blunder, UWPites are laughing. This Lugay thing has been well used by the opposition to their GREAT ADVANTAGE! You blundered. Fire those who gave you the bad advice.
    5. UWP campaign is presently more effective than that of the Labour Party
    6. Interesting contests in traditional Labour strongholds are clear signs that many Labourites are now campaigning for UWP/ Team Dominica. What went wrong? Were they marginalised?
7.When the people’s minds are made up, projects do not translate into votes.
    8. Election should have been held about 5 months ago. You would have been the winner. Presently i have doubts.
    9. Giving the opposition time to play with is political stupidity and ignorance.
    10. STILL WISH YOU WELL!!!!!
