Dominica ranks poorly on access to justice for children

justice for childrenDominica did not get good ranking on access to justice for children, a new research from Child Rights International Network (CRIN) shows.

The research shows that the island ranked 145th in the world on how effectively children can use the courts to defend their rights.

The new report, ‘Rights, Remedies and Representation’, takes into account whether children can bring lawsuits when their rights are violated, the legal resources available to them, the practical considerations for taking legal action and whether international law on children’s rights is applied in national courts.

According to the report, Dominica ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1991 but the treaty was not directly incorporated into domestic law and requires implementing laws.

To date, no comprehensive Children’s Act or child-specialised courts have been created in Dominica, the report indicates.

The report shows that children on the island can generally bring cases through a “next friend” but the court has the power to remove or change this person.

On the bright side, the report shows that legal aid may be provided by legal clinics, which prioritise children and children can refer to the High Court for redress for human rights violations and some child-friendly provisions do exist.

The report condensed findings from 197 country reports, researched with the support of hundreds of lawyers and NGOs and is intended to help countries improve access to justice for children nationally.

After years of being humiliated as a victim by d magistrates, my son, who is a victim of firearmed roberry told me:
“Dad you are wrong! CRIME DOES PAY”
In 2008 my children tried to stop their pigs from being stolen by firearmed robbers who 4 police caught red handed.
d magistrates encouraged arson, vandalism, piononing our water tanks, our animals…perpetrators have since been caught by the police sevel times….every 4 months d magistrates would humiliate my son…blaming the victims while praising d criminals.
    God hates a dishonest scale
the symbol of the court system is the scale.
Is this d reason why Dominica is having disaster after disaster?
Injustice from a dishonest scale means the nation rejects God’s protection.

we left the country to escape years of terrorism encouraged by da’s injustice system.
Police ignore reports by our caretaker & us even open admissions of tresspassing & breaching of restraining orders.

You see what hypocrites we are? So much noise we make about homosexuals but paedophiles appear to have almost free reign. What is worse?

One DA have to be last when you all are chanting for them on stage, and two mothers should be held accountable if find taking settlement form child abusers. The lawyers that are represent them has to be blame and the busers should get more time behind bars, with all these alot would be better where child abuse is concern.

I am not surprised, Skeritt has been managing the country in a reckless manner for the past twelve years, when compared with the rest of the islands in the Eastern Caribbean. Mr. Linton has been echoing this warning since he became leader of the opposition. He told us that as far as the economy was concerned, Dominica was last in the Eastern Caribbean, however, we were first in corrupted practices. To learn that we are ranking in 145th position in the world on access to justice for children should be concern to Skeritt, because it is these same children he has to beg for their votes if he is really serious about running this country for the next twenty years.

Truly air Dominica on remote control and the pilot not on board. Boople you seem to be a real prophet boy. The equipment on air Dominica is receiving poor rating by all major mechanics, and it is just time before it crashes.

  10. The Evangelist?
    February 15, 2016

Jesus was right when he said this in Matthew 17:18 : A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

Clearly, despite what the former evangelist of God, who is now a deep RED evangelist of Skerrit and other ‘lover of money’ pastors are telling us, based on the fruits we are now reaping in Dominica, we know our tree in Dominica is evil, and will soon cut down.

The saddest thing in Dominica at the moment is the whole of the justice system! It just does not seem to work here in Dominica at all! Murderers get out on bail!! Cases don’t get heard. What has happened to the case of the policemen and woman from Portsmouth whose prisoner died in the cell?? Children in our Dominica have very little chance at all. It is talked about that young women are being abused and taken advantage of by older men, some of whom are said to be in very high places. It is very, very serious and extremely sad. What is going to happen to our children and their future. Our children are the future of Dominica. We all should be giving them a good example of how to live, treat them with respect, love, care and teach them the difference between right and wrong! God bless our children and keep them safe from evil predators!

I did not expect to hear anything better especially when one takes into consideration the fact that children are the victims of some politicians.

      February 15, 2016

In a free country with free press, I would not have said children are the victims of some politicians because I would call them by name. But because I know DNO would delete I am forced to say politicians. However, I thank God that Dominica has honorable and God fearing people like Lennox Linton, who continues to fight for the justice of children and justice for all.

Does DOMINICA, under the current Roosevelt Skerrit leadership do well in any good thing?

This is a leader that is bent and sold out to wrong, and therefore it does not at all surprise me that Dominica has once again ranked poorly on access to justice for children.

How in the world can such a….. man do anything to enhance justice for children or for anyone?

What an indictment of shame. We spent $27 million of borrowed money on a Palace for one man but cannot provide justice for our children. I feel very upset and sad this morning.

Ask Skerrit nuh. He is supposed to be the genius and the annointed one. $500000 for the bishop and his roof but how much to stop our children being abused?? Skerrit says to be leader you must love your people people first but I don’t see any evidence of that. I never hear a more hollow slogan coming from mister.

No shorty that does not make me feel better but at least it is truthful and only if we accept that we can start making it better. Thank you for reminding us brother.
