Dominica Society of Architects plans activities for coming year

architectThe Dominica Society of Architects (DSA) was founded in the late 80’s. However the society had been dormant for a number of years. On Wednesday April 29th, 2015 a new executive was selected and is presently restructuring to ensure the good works started can be continued. The DSA is currently active with 17 registered architects.

The society is a non-profit organization for architects in every field of architecture in Dominica. Our mission is to promote and encourage responsible architecture and it seeks to contribute to the enhancement of society and the environment.

The main objectives of the DSA are to advance and maintain a high standard of professionalism, integrity and competence in the practice of architecture in Dominica and to promote public awareness and encourage the interest of the community in the quality and benefits of good architecture and the built environment.

We also work to provide high-quality support services for members, clients, industry associates and the public. We are here to improve and elevate the technical and general knowledge of persons engaged in, or about to engage in the practice of architecture as well as to promote sustainable designs and operate in the most environmentally sustainable manner possible.

The following activities are a few of those being planned by the DSA for the upcoming year.

In an effort to disseminate the culture of architecture, DSA will hold and promote competitions among members of the public, rewarding the outstanding persons and encouraging creativity. There will also be a number of awards which will be issued to architects who have met certain criteria of excellence over a stipulated period of time. Among these will be the Architect of the year, young architect of the year and sustainable architecture awards.

In an effort to develop the next generation architects, DSA will conduct activities to develop young architects and students wishing to become architects. This will take the form of a nationwide end-of-school design competition, and Internship programs for undergraduate and graduate students. We will also organize seminars, exhibitions, and site tours to support and promote exchange among young architects as well as continued learning.

In the area of architectural design, social systems must change according to technological innovations. The DSA is now well positioned to propose new and better ideas which will enable the construction of urban architectural environments that are beautiful, safe and comfortable for the nation’s people with regard to contemporary needs.

Architects are required to continually improve their abilities in order to respond to the constantly rising level of technological complexity and newly developed designing methods. Innovations in information and other technologies and development methodologies for urban disaster reduction and greater consideration for the earth’s environment are constantly being updated.

It is our hope that our organization can make tangible contributions to the wider community. In this light a professional qualification system for architects is being revised in with the hope of standardizing and improving the quality of services offered to the public. Therefore nation’s people may entrust their projects to the hands of design specialists (i.e. architects) with peace of mind.

I hope this organization cones back, cause we need good architects in Dominica it is seriously lacking. Our buildings are ugly concrete monstrosities. Planning needs to in force that plans need to be done by architects and not those drafts men that think they highly qualified.

The Engineeres in Dominica are worthless , they operate like civil servants, they don’t have a clue of how to build any thing. After the British left nothing has changed in Dominica. Every bridge and sea wall have to be build by williams construction from Barbados who went to the University of the westindes. Why can’t Dominican Engineer build the bridges and walls in Dominica, why dont they get together and form one company. All Dominican Engineeres received a bad education if they cannot build a bridge . Mabee they drink to much and wait on jesus to save them. The most dangerous poison the engineeres face is that they think they are achievers doing nothing. And the civil servants has the same proplem. There is $1 billion to rebuild Dominica how much of it you smart people are going to get. Nothing has changed after slavery. Take risks get together and apply for the jobs please
