Dominica to celebrate 19th anniversary of ratification of Convention on the Rights of the Child

Acting Chief Child Welfare Officer Martin Anthony is encouraging the public to participate fully in several programmes to be undertaken around the country to mark a significant anniversary.

He was speaking on the heels of the 19th anniversary since Dominica ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Anthony said one of the highlights is an open day activity at the Welfare Division on Friday.

“We expect members of the public to visit the division to view certain displays and members of staff will be available to answer questions and discuss the convection,” he said.

According to Anthony, schools’ visits have also been planned for the day’s activities, where the rights for parents and children will be discussed.

“Dominica when ratified that Convention in 1991 undertook certain obligations to ensure that the provisions of the convention are enforced. The convention speaks to the health, education and protection of children from drug and other abuse. It also speaks to the issue of families and what they must do,” he added.

The Minister for Social Services, Community Development and Gender Affairs Gloria Shillingford will deliver a television and radio address in that regard.
