Dominica to observe World Red Cross Day

world red cross dayOn World Red Cross Red Crescent Day, observed on May 8, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is celebrating and reaffirming the relevance of its Fundamental Principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality – the core of its humanitarian commitment, values and mission.

At the heart of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is the mandate to assist communities affected by disasters, conflict or crisis, wherever and whoever they are.

“Every time you see the Dominica Red Cross they are acting in accordance with the Movement’s Fundamental Principles,” says Mrs Kathleen Pinard-Byrne, Director General, Dominica Red Cross. “These principles safeguard our access to vulnerable communities, and enable us to engage with hundreds of persons through programmes such as Disaster Risk Management, Community Based Health and First Aid, Blood Donor Recruitment and First Aid & CPR services.

50 years after the adoption of the principles, the global humanitarian landscape has become more complex and more severe, driven by worsening conflicts, aggravating impacts of climate change and declining access to funding. These challenges have impacted the ability of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to access people in need of humanitarian assistance.

On this day of observance, the Dominica Red Cross is also launching a free Hazard App and First Aid App for iOS and Android phone users. These knowledge sharing applications are being promoted so that a greater percentage of the population can access information at any time on the main hazards which affect Dominica, the actions which can be taken to prepare for and respond to these events, and to recognise the signs and symptoms of the various injuries and illnesses so that appropriate action can be taken. These Apps also provide useful tools e.g. a torchlight, strobe light, alarm and alert notification which the app users can access.
