Dominican in Canada releases book of poems

Joszann St. John

Joszann St. John, a Dominican living in Canada, has released a book entitled ‘Wounded Bird No More.’

The book, her first, is a collection of poems which explore a myriad of subjects including love, life, nature, and experiences in Canada and Dominica.

According to a press release, one of the more emotional poems ‘World’s Children’ showcases the plight of poverty stricken children in Africa. Another poem, ‘Londonderry River’ captures the essence of Dominica’s lush beauty.

“The book is an inspiration to everyone, especially girls and women. The author wrote the book to empower other women as she empowers herself. The book’s title, ‘Wounded Bird No More’ suggests a breaking away from past hurt and injustices. The work is a self portrait of a woman embracing her destiny, of finding ones higher self, and being brave enough to take risks,” the press release states.

St. John moved from Dominica to Canada in 1996. She is a former student of the St. Andrews High School and the Clifton Dupigny Community College. Currently, she is pursuing studies at York University in Toronto, Canada.

Wouned Bird No More is said to have an emotional intensity that grabs the reader. The book was released by Xlibris.com and is available at www.xlibris.com/WoundedBirddNoMore.html.

Congratulations! I am proud of you cous. Indeed it is an inspiration to us all daughters (and sons too) of the countryside. This has fuel my own endeavours to do more writing too. I intend to write some more poems so that I can publish a book or two and to write a play. Thank you for showing us that we can achieve whatever we set our mind to & to achieving that higher self. Thank you for sharing.

    One love.

    Hi Guys,
I want to say thank you for all the support thus far.I am working on getting the book to Dominica. Please be patient,It will get there.I am ironing out the kinks in the system.

You can join my page on facebook.I am working on some projects stay tuned, they will be dropping soon.I am so excited.

Recently I started experimenting with Cocoy from my neck of the woods (Wesley&Marigot). You can view some of it on my facebook page under notes.

I was inspired to write Cocoy by one of the more prominent black authors.George Elliot Clarke, admonished black writers to write sometimes in their own language as a way to preserve nation language. If we look at some of the great literary giants like Skakespeare and Chaucer they wrote in their own language.Old English, and sometimes ‘Cockney’.Language is what makes a people unique.Nation language is worth holding on to.

    All the best for now.Peace!
